Best Batter Today

Alex Bregman of the Red Sox works his way into fifth place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He went three for four with a home run in a 6-5 Tigers win, the only extra-base hit of the eleven the Red Sox collected in the game. Twenty six of Bregman’s fifty five hits on the season landed for extra bases for a .589 slugging percentage.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees continued his dominant season with another two for four, and another home run, this one the game winner as New York beats Seattle 3-2. That raises Judge’s batting average to .412, and the probability of him hitting .400 to 0.000059. That’s about six chances in 100,000. He is on a pace for 256 hits. In the same game, Cal Raleigh of the Mariners went two for four and now sits in third place.

Shohei Ohtani and Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers stand second and fourth respectively. Ohtani posted the big night, two for four with a walk and a home run, while Freeman singled and walked in four trips to the plate in a 9-3 win over the Athletics. The A’s drop to fourth place in the AL West, but they are only 1 1/2 game out of first place in an extremely tight division.

Rhys Hoskins of the Brewers posted the highest game score of the day, an 87. He experienced a perfect day at the plate, four for four with a walk, a double, and a home run. He made a huge improvement in getting on base this season, from a .303 mark in 2024 up to .396 after yesterday’s performance. It helped seal a 9-5 victory over the Guardians.

Mets Ejection

Yohan Ramirez of the Mets gets ejected after throwing at the head of Rhys Hoskins. Hoskins ducked, and the pitch missed him, but the umpires caucused decided the pitch was intentional, so Ramirez is gone. He’ll likely be suspended as well. Hoskins was three for four in the game with a home run and four RBI, and walked after play resumed.

On Friday, Hoskins slid hard into Jeff McNeil of the Mets at second base, as there seemed to be bad blood there. Usually teams retaliate earlier for something like that, but maybe getting knocked around exacerbated the situation.

Ramirez did a poor job of hiding that he threw intentionally, also.

The Brewers lead the Mets 6-2 in the middle of the seventh inning.

Trading Homers

Rhys Hoskins gets the Phillies on the board in the bottom of the third inning. He follows a two-out walk and stolen base by Kyle Schwarber with a home run to put the Phillies up 2-0 over the Padres. Juan Soto answers in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to cut the lead to 2-1. Hoskins hit two home runs on Saturday, Soto hit one.

Best Batter Today

Alex Bregman of the Astros breaks back into the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. The Astros third baseman goes two for four with a double in the 5-0 win over the Yankees that puts Houston one win away from the AL Pennant. His 2022 post-season slash line comes in at .346/.393/.654. He ranks fifth.

In the same game, Aaron Judge of the Yankees goes 0 for 4, but holds second place. Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers, and Mets hitters Brandon Nimmo and Pete Alonso rank one, three, and four respectively.

The best game score of the day goes to Rhys Hoskins of the Phillies, two for four with two home runs and four RBI in the 10-6 win over the Padres. That was good for a score of 74. Hoskins is batting just .171 in the post-season, but five of his seven hits have gone for extra bases, giving him a .488 slugging percentage.

Striking Back

Kyle Schwarber and Rhys Hoskins get two runs back in the bottom of the first as Swarber singles and Hoskins homers off Padres starter Mike Clevinger. J.T. Realmuto follows with a walk, and Bryce Harper brings him in with a double to cut the Padres lead to 4-3, no one out in the first.

Looks like this game might be a slugfest.

Emphatic Home Runs

Rhys Hoskins and Bryce Harper hit two run homers in the bottom of the third innings off separate pitchers. Hoskins knew his hit off Spencer Strider was gone when the ball left the bat, and his reaction was incredible. He took a few steps toward first base, bent over, screamed, then threw his bat down into the ground. You might have thought he was angry after a strikeout. J.T. Realmuto followed with a single, and the Phillies brought in a reliever. Harper hit the first pitch off the lefty Dylan Lee 401 feet, and Philadelphia leads Atlanta 6-0.

Best Batter Today

The same five players occupy the top five slots of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings, but in a completely different order. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros and Aaron Judge of the Yankees tie for the second highest game score of the day with an 80, moving into first and second place respectively. Alvarez posts a perfect night at the plate, three for three with a home run and two walks Houston dominates Seattle 11-1. Judge hits a single and two home runs in five trips to the plate as the Yankees comeback big late on two Royals infield miscues to win 11-5.

Judge is now at 41 home runs before the month of August. The current hot streak, eight home runs in nine games since the All-Star Break, puts him on a pace for 66 home runs on the season, with the most likely total 56. The probability of him hitting at least 62 home runs rises to 0.07. That is, if you played out 100 season from here, Judge would be expected to break the AL single season home run record in seven of them. He is the 12th player to hit at least 40 home runs by the end of July. Roger Maris had 40 in 1961. Judge is still a long shot to catch Barry Bonds, with a probability of 0.00002 of hitting at least 74 home runs, but that probability is way up since hitting a low on July 10th.

Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals drops to third place as he singles in four trips in a 6-2 win over the Nationals. Austin Riley of the Braves continues his hot power hitting with a three for four night in a 5-2 win over Arizona. He collect two doubles and a home run in the game. He is slugging .906 for the month of July.

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers rounds out the top five as he goes 0 for 4 with a walk in a 5-4 win in Colorado.

The highest game score of the night belongs to Rhys Hoskins of the Phillies, an 83. Hoskins posts a perfect night, four for four with a walk and the game winning home run in the tenth inning as Philadelphia beats Pittsburgh 4-2. Hoskins’s power fell off a bit this season, but he made up for it somewhat by getting on base more. Hoskins ranks 21.

Best Batter Today

Friday’s games brought just a slight change to the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals remains in first place as he goes two for four with a double as Philadelphia takes the game 5-3. Note that Bryce Harper of the Phillies, who is injured, did not play and drops to fourth place. While there was much angst among Phillies fans at the loss of Harper, teammates Rhys Hoskins and Kyle Schwarber rank tenth and eleventh respectively, so there is plenty of talent left on the team.

Also in that game, Nolan Arenado of the Cardinals hit for the cycle. His game score of 86 was the best of the day, and Arenado now ranks sixth on the list.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros did not play as the team is still evaluating a concussion. He remains in second place. Pete Alonso of the Mets moves into third place as he goes two for three with a walk in a 4-3 win over the Rangers. Josh Bell of the Nationals holds fifth place going two for four with a double in a 6-3 Marlins win.

Tummy Tuck

Rhys Hoskins of the Phillies needs abdominal surgery:

The Philadelphia Phillies placed slugger Rhys Hoskins back on the injured list Thursday with an abdomen tear that will cause him to miss the rest of the season.

The first baseman said he will likely have surgery to repair the tear within the next week and that the recovery period is six to eight weeks.

ESPN.com

Hoskins slugged .530 for the year and played his best baseball since the start of July. He would have been a huge help as the Phillies try to make the playoffss.

Game of Inches

The Mets beat the Phillies 8-7 Sunday night as an apparent game tying home run by Rhys Hoskins in the bottom of the ninth inning get reversed on replay, Hoskins getting a double and two RBI instead. The ball hit the top of the fence in front of the bleachers and rebounded onto the field. The ground rules in Philadelphia say that’s a ball in play, not a home run.

Call that the COVID loss. There were no fans sitting in the seats behind that fence. If there were, no doubt someone would have tried to catch the ball, and likely pulled it into the seats. Instead, the game of inches cliche had one of its most fitting moments.

The Mets and Nationals are now tied for first place in the NL East, each at .500.

Team Offense, Philadelphia Phillies

The 2021 series on team offense continues with the the Philadelphia Phillies. The Phillies finished tied for fifth in the majors and fourth in the National League in 2020 with 5.10 runs scored per game.

I am using RotoChamp as a source of default lineups. That Joe Girardi order is plugged into the Lineup Analysis Tool (LAT) using Musings Marcels as the batter projections.  For the pitcher slot, I used the Phillies numbers from 2017-2020. That information produces the following results (Runs per game):

  • Best lineup: 4.84
  • Probable lineup: 4.65
  • Worst lineup: 4.23
  • Regressed lineup: 4.37

Joe Girardi and the LAT are in perfect agreement on the four, five, and six hitters, J.T. Realmuto, Rhys Hoskins, and Didi Gregorius. They also agree that Andrew McCutchen, Alec Bohm, and Bryce Harper are a good sequence, but the LAT puts them 9-1-2 instead of 1-2-3. The fifth best order agrees on who should make up each third of the lineup, it just disagrees on the order within two of those thirds.

The Phillies order does put five very good hitters together at the top of the order. All of them get on base, all of them except McCutchen project to good slugging percentages. Other than the pitchers batting, Scott Kingery is the only batter who shows weakness both in on-base and slugging percentage.

Offense should not be the problem for the Phillies. They will need to see if a good offense is good enough for the pitching staff.

You can follow the data for the series in this Google spreadsheet.

Best Batter Today

The top five moved around a bit, but the batters remain the same in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Mike Trout missed another game with a wrist injury, but stays on top. It takes a few days before being out of the lineup degrades the score. Shohei Ohtani took up the slack with a four for five night with two home runs. Matt Carpenter hit a lead-off home run and now ranks second, Christian Yelich homered to move into third place, Alex Bregman was hit by a pitch in a great pitchers duel in Los Angeles, and Jose Ramirez singled for fifth place.

Rhys Hoskins is now in sixth place. Fifteen of his last 20 hits have gone for extra-bases, and he’s a big reason for the Phillies push into first place. Rhys has now played 150 games in his career. He owns a .265/.383/.555 slash line with 40 home runs, 35 doubles, 99 runs scored, and 120 RBI. Over half his hits went for extra bases. He’s been building toward the top since he arrived in the majors, and now he has enough games under his belt that he is about to join the elites on this list.

Hoskins Impressive

Rhys Hoskins leads off the second round with 20 home runs. He hits enough long home runs to earn bonus time to get to twenty, giving Kyle Schwarber a high total to match.

Update: Wow. Schwarber gets off to a slow start, but comes on in the last 1:30 to hit 21, without needing the bonus he earned. The last one was in the upper deck next to the foul poll. Quite the shots.

Glass Jaw

Rhys Hoskins broke his jaw:

Hoskins left Tuesday night’s game early after fouling a ball off his face. Manager Gabe Kapler informed the media Wednesday that a CT scan revealed a fracture in Hoskins’ jaw and he will now undergo further evaluations.

Hoskins had a strong April, but cooled off over the last month. I suspect pitchers adjusted to him, and this injury might give him the chance to figure out how opponents are getting him out.

Big Slugging

Rhys Hoskins keeps slamming the ball, hitting the 11th home run of his young career against the Cubs in a 6-3 Philadelphia victory. He has now hit eight home runs in his last night games, and his home run streak stands at five. He is slugging 1.118 in that time frame.

He has also hit home runs in five straight games, so he is just three away from tying the consecutive game record as well. Think of slugging percentage as a distance, and Hoskins in this stretch finishes an average AB past first base.

Hoskins Homerskins

It took a few games for Phillies rookie Rhys Hoskins to find his power, but he went deep again Saturday evening to set a record for fewest games to 10 home runs, 17. He did not hit one in his first four games, then three in his next two games. He has now homered in seven of his last eight games to set the record. He posted a .287/.375/.532 slash line in the minors, so he had nothing left to prove there.

The Cubs lead the Phillies 4-2 in the 5th inning.
