9 to 2 Jays

With the Yankees leading 3-2 in the ninth, Jose Bautista throws to Dioner Navarro to nail Chris Young at the plate and prevent New York from scoring an insurance run. In the bottom of the inning, Navarro homers off Andrew Miller to tie the game at three. It’s been a tight, exciting game this evening as the two AL East teams battle for the division title.

Update: Greg Bird comes up big in the top of the tenth with a three-run homer to give New York a 6-3 lead and quiet the crowd. Bird is two for five in the game with a double and a home run. Seventeen of his 31 hits have gone for extra bases.

Dioner’s Dingers

Dioner Navarro hit three home runs and drove in six as the Cubs beat the White Sox 9-3 Thursday afternoon. That gives Dioner six homers on the season, tied for his fourth highest single season total. Of his 14 hits on the season, seven have gone for extra bases. With 47 career home runs, over six percent of them came in this one game. He hit more home runs today than he did in all of 2010 and 2012. Maybe at age 29 the once hot prospect is finally finding himself.

Walk-off Catchers

Dioner Navarro and Alex Avila record walk-off events within minutes of each other Thursday afternoon. The Brewers were one out away from a 1-0 win When Todd Frazier homered and Jay Bruce singled. That set up an unusual walk-off triple for Navarro. The Reds hurt Milwaukee’s playoff hopes with a 2-1 win.

Billy Butler hit a solo home in the top of the ninth to tie the Tigers at four. The Royals defense loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning, however. Avila grounded to first, Brayan Pena stepped on first, but he cold not complete the double play. The Tigers win 5-4 and stay in first place for another day.

Navarro Injured

Dioner Navarro suffered a leg injury this afternoon:

Navarro is being taken off the field on a cart, his left leg immobilized. It certainly appears to be serious based on how much pain Navarro was in and how the Rays staff was consoling him. Navarro had just returned to action Tuesday after missing a few days with a left thumb bruise.

Stay tuned.

Update: Navarro suffered a nerve contusion, which appears not to be that serious.
