Games of the Day

The Rangers and the Blue Jays look like the best early afternoon contest as Kolby Allard takes in Hyun Jin Ryu. Allard owns a 3.69 ERA in eight starts and ten relief appearances. As a starter, he showed better control, but gives up long balls at a much higher rate. He allowed nine home runs in 43 1/3 innings as a starter, two HR in twenty innings as a reliever. Since the start of June Ryu had some rough starts, but is coming off a good game against the Orioles.

The Red Sox try to go 8-0 against the Yankees in 2021 as Nathan Eovaldi faces Gerrit Cole. Eovaldi tries to reach ten wins in a season for the second time in his career. He stands 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA against the Yankees this season. Cole struck out 147 batters and walked just 22 in 114 innings this season. He also goes for his tenth win. He allowed six runs, five earned, in his only start against Boston this year. That’s 1/6 of the runs he allowed this season.

The Giants send Anthony DeSclafani against the Cardinals and Kwang Hyun Kim. DeSclafani performed his best on the road this season, with a 2.14 ERA in eleven starts. He allowed just 44 hits in 67 1/3 innings outside San Francisco. Kim pitched extremely well lately, allowing just one run in his last three starts covering eighteen innings. He only struck out 14, but limited the opposition to eleven hits.

Games of the Day

The tight NL East race features the Phillies at the Marlins as Zach Eflin faces Trevor Rogers. Eflin stands at about the same number of innings as last season. He shows much better control, with just five walks compared to 15 in 2020, but it’s come at a cost of strikeouts, down from 70 to 57. Overall, it improved his ERA 0.2 runs. Rogers posted a 6.11 ERA in his first season of 2020, allowing five home runs in 28 innings. He allowed three dingers so far in 2021 in 51 2/3 innings, helping reduce his ERA to 1.74.

The Cardinals visit the other Chicago team as they take on the White Sox. Kwang Hyun Kim battles Lance Lynn. Kwang pitches limited innings in his starts so far, just 26 1/3 innings in six starts. He hasn’t gotten into trouble, however, as he allowed just one home run for a 2.73 ERA. Lynn averages less than six innings a start as well. Since he isn’t allowed to get in trouble a third time through the order, his ERA stands at 1.55 with just 28 hits allowed in 40 2/3 innings. Note that’s not enough innings to qualify for the ERA title.

Games of the Day

The Mets send Marcus Stroman against the Rays and Josh Fleming in the best of the early games. Stroman seems to have made the best of opting out of the 2020 season, returning to baseball with a 1.99 ERA in his first eight starts. Hits against him are down as he allows a .256 BABIP. Given that his rate of line drives allowed is not down, those shots may be right at fielders. Fleming owns a 2.76 ERA in 62 career innings. None of his three-true outcome rates are all that impressive. Opponents are hitting .324 against him with runners in scoring position, they just don’t get in scoring position very often.

Once again the Braves at the Brewers features a good match-up as Huscar Ynoa takes on Freddy Peralta. Ynoa is hitting .400 (6 for 15) with three extra-base hits for an .867 slugging percentage. Opponents are hitting .186 with a .366 slugging percentage. At seasonal age 25, Peralta is in the first of his prime years, and blows batters away with 61 strikeouts in 39 innings.

The Sunday night game features the Cardinals at the Padres, with Kwang Hyun Kim battling rookie Ryan Weathers. Kim stands undefeated in his career, 4-0 in 13 appearances with a 2.03 ERA. He needs a good defense behind him as he owns both low walk and strikeout rates. Weathers allowed just nine hits so far in 22 1/3 innings as the seven walks don’t do much damage. His ERA stands at 0.81.

Playoffs Today

The National League Wild Card Round gets underway at noon EDT with the Reds playing at the Braves. Trevor Bauer takes on Max Fried. Bauer led the NL in ERA with a 1.73 mark in 73 innings. He recorded 100 strikeouts and just 17 walks. Fried only pitched 56 innings, so his 2.25 ERA did not qualify for the leader board. He only allowed two home runs however, one of four pitchers to allow just two home runs in at least 56 innings.

At 1 PM EDT, the Astros and Twins continue their series with Houston leading 1-0. The Astros have not named a starter:

The most obvious choices would seem to be righthanders Jose Urquidy or Cristian Javier, or perhaps the two in tandem, in the wake of Framber Valdez’s five-inning stint Tuesday that removed him from consideration.

The Twins send Jose Berrios to the mound. Berrios saw his walk rate rise this season by about 1 1/2 batters per nine, giving him an ERA of 4.00. He will try to end the Twins seventeen game post-season losing streak.

At 2 PM EDT, Miami plays their first post-season game since winning the World Series in 2003. Note that the Marlins made the post-season twice, and won the World Series both times. Sandy Alcantara takes on Kyle Hendricks. Alcantara pitched well down the stretch, posting a 2.30 ERA in five September starts. Hendricks limited walks better than any ERA qualifier, just 0.89 BB per 9 IP.

At 3 PM EDT, the White Sox try to sweep the Athletics as Chicago sends Dallas Keuchel to the mound against Chris Bassitt. Keuchel is another pitcher with just two home runs allowed. The A’s are not a team that strings together hits, so they need power. Bassitt pitched 1/3 inning less than Keuchel. They walked the same number of batters, 17, but Basitt allowed four more hits and four more home runs. That led to the 0.30 run higher ERA.

At 4 PM EDT, the Blue Jays try to keep their series alive with Hyun Jin Ryu facing the Rays and Tyler Glasnow. The transition to the American League did not hurt Ryu, as he posted his third consecutive season with an ERA under 3.00. Glasnow allowed a .200 BA during the regular season, but 19 of the 43 hits against him went for extra bases.

At 5 PM EDT, Kwang Hyun Kim leads the Cardinals against the Padres and Chris Paddack. Kim posted a 1.62 ERA in 39 innings, limiting hits despite a low strikeout rate. Paddack allowed 14 home runs this year, but most of the power against him came with the bases empty. The Padres make their first playoff appearance since 2006.

At 7 PM EDT, the Yankees and Indians play game two with Masahiro Tanaka pitching against Carlos Carrasco. Tanaka survived the line drive off his head to post a 3.56 ERA. He walked just eight batters in 48 innings. Carrasco is another Indians pitcher who blows away batters, with 82 K in 68 innings. Cleveland needs to win to prevent adding another year to their World Championship drought.

Finally, the Brewers face the Dodgers at 10 PM EDT. Brent Suter starts for Milwaukee. With injuries reducing the starting staff, Suter is more of an opener. In his four starts, he pitched 13 innings, allowing a 1.38 ERA. Walker Buehler takes the hill for Los Angeles. Buehler pitched very little, lasting just 36 2/3 innings in eight starts mostly due to blisters. He allowed seven home runs in that time.
