Playoffs Today

Wednesday features four elimination games as two National League teams go for sweeps and two AL teams go for 3-1 victories. The day starts at 3 PM EDT with the Mariners sending Bryce Miller against the Tigers and Casey Mize. Miller pitched poorly in 2025, with a low K rate, an okay walk rate, and a high home run rate. It could have been worse, but opponents generated a .288 BABIP against him, limiting the damage somewhat. Mize allowed just one hit in his start against the Guardians, a solo home run, but was pulled after three innings.

At 5 PM EDT, the Brewers and Cubs move to Chicago, Milwaukee going for the sweep. Quinn Priester takes on Jameson Taillon. Priester brought his K rate up to 7.55 per 9 IP this season, which is still low, but it helped him lower his ERA to 3.32, over a run better than his career average. Taillon pitched well in his two post-season starts, allowing one run in 8 1/3 innings, but did have a poor relief outing to give him a 3.24 playoff ERA.

Toronto plays their second match point as the Blue Jays send Louis Varland against Cam Schlittler at 7 PM EDT in The Bronx. Varland serves as the opener in a bullpen game. He appeared in each game of the series so far, the Yankees reaching him for two home runs on Tuesday night. The Yankees are hitting .352/.403/.611 against the Blue jays pen. Schlittler made a great start in his first MLB post-season appearance, winning the Wild Card series for the Yankees. The Blue Jays did rough him up a bit this year.

Finally, the Dodgers return home to attempt a sweep of the Phillies, Philadelphia sending Aaron Nola against Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Nola finished the regular season with a 6.01 ERA in 17 starts, by far the highest of his career. He did post some strong starts during the season, but seldom carried that into the next outing. After two seasons in the majors, Yamamoto owns outstanding three true outcomes, with 10.45 K per 9 and 0.72 HR per nine his strongest numbers. He owns a 2.84 ERA in five post-season starts.

He Cam, He Saw, He Conquered

Cam Schlittler gave the Yankees eight shutout innings as New York beats Boston 4-0 to advance to the ALDS against the Blue Jays. Schlittler struck out twelve and walked none, and was allowed to throw 107 pitches. It was great to see a young pitcher go deep in the game.

The Yankees scored all four runs in the fourth inning as they figured out Connelly Early. The bullpen will be well rested.

Playoffs Today

The Tigers and Guardians play the first of three winner takes all games in Cleveland at 3 PM EDT. Jack Flaherty faces Slade Cecconi. While Flaherty pitched a few good post-season games, his overall ERA stands at 5.36. He allowed eight home runs in 47 innings. Cecconi pitched twice in relief for Arizona two years ago in the post-season, allowing two hits in six inning and nothing else. He allowed three runs in twelve innings against the Tigers this season, all on solo home runs.

At 5 PM EDT, Yu Darvish and the Padres try to stop Jameson Taillon and the Cubs. Darvish pitched better for the Padres in the post season than his overall record in the playoffs. In both cases, however, he tends to allow a high number of home runs. Taillon is extremely stingy issuing walks, which helps make up for his high home run rate. Look for the team that goes deep today to move on to the next round.

Finally, the Red Sox and Yankees battle at 8 PM EDT with a pair of rookies on the mound. Connelly Early faces Cam Schlittler. Early made just four starts at the MLB level, but proved effective as he walked four and struck out 29 in 19 1/3 innings without allowing a home run. He did not face the Yankees. Schlittler, in 73 innings, posted a 2.96 ERA. He did walk 31, but allowed just 58 hits as he struck out 84. He faces Boston for the first time.

Games of the Day

The Yankees continue to be in a must win situation as they host the Orioles. Tomoyuki Sugano takes on Cam Schlittler. Sugano turned out to be a ball in play pitcher, with a low K rate and a low walk rate. A lot of those balls in play went for extra-base hits, including 30 home runs. That’s tied for fifth highest in the majors. Schlittler’s strength comes from limiting extra-base hits, opponents slugging just .357 against him.

The Blue Jays are not quite as must win as the Yankees, but winning keeps them in first place. The Rays send Joe Boyle against rookie Trey Yesavage. Boyle is wild, with 25 walks in 47 innings this season and 70 walks in 110 2/3 innings for his career. Yesavage struck out eleven in his first nine innings with no home runs allowed, but his five walks did hurt his ERA.

The Tigers can still win the AL Central, but have not announced a starter for their game in Boston. Rookie Connelly Early starts for the Red Sox, but it’s not clear who will come in late.

The Mets can’t afford to lose as they find themselves in a tie with the Reds, and Cincinnati holding the tie break. New York sends Clay Holmes against the Marlins and Eury Perez. Holmes pitched well against the Marlins in terms of three-true outcomes this season, but owns a 4.20 ERA in 15 innings. Perez lasted just 2/3 of an inning in his one start versus the Mets this season.

The Reds send Andrew Abbott against the Brewers and Robert Gasser. Abbott is simply tough on batters, with an opposition slash line of .234/.286/.370. Gasser is a control artist, who in a brief MLB career walked three batters in 31 innings.

The Rangers have not announced a pitcher to face the Guardians, but Joey Cantillo tries to move Cleveland an inch closer to the division title. His high walk rate is balanced by his low home run rate and high K rate.

The Astros are still alive but they need to win two games and hope that either Cleveland or Detroit loses two. AJ Blubaugh holds the season in his hands as he faces the Angels and Caden Dana. The rookie Blubaugh owns a 1.93 ERA overall, and a 2.57 ERA in two starts. He is tough to hit, but six of the sixteen hits he allowed went for home runs. Dana owns a 7.32 ERA in 35 2/3 MLB innings, having allowed eleven home runs.

Games of the Day

The Yankees send Cam Schlittler against the Orioles and Kyle Bradish. Schlittler’s ERA of 3.41 is good despite a .329 OBP allowed. He removed seven base runners with four GDPs, two caught stealings, and a pickoff. Bradish, making his fifth start of the season, walk eight and struck out 30 in 22 innings.

The Reds sit one-game out of the third NL Wild Card slot as they host the Cubs, not quite eliminated from NL Central title. Jameson Taillon takes on Andrew Abbott. Taillon owns a .271 OBP allowed, the best of his career. While he limits hits, 46 of the 102 safeties against him were extra-base hits. Abbott needs 5 2/3 innings to reach the qualifying level for the first time in his career. He held batters to a .286 OBP and just a .374 slugging percentage.

The Astros need a win as they finish their series hosting the Mariners on Sunday Night Baseball, the last ESPN Sunday night broadcast. Logan Gilbert battles Jason Alexander. Gilbert is just 5-6 despite a 3.53 ERA. He averages just 5 1/3 innings per start, making it tough to get decisions. Alexander is 4-1 with a 2.89 ERA as a starter, giving up 13 runs in nine innings as a reliever.

Games of the Day

The Mets visit the Reds, Cincinnati five games behind New York in the NL Wild Card race. David Peterson takes on Andrew Abbott. Peterson pitched 31 innings more than in any of his previous MLB seasons. This may have taken a toll as he pitched poorly in three of his last five outings, walking a ton of batters. Abbott just passed his innings from last season, and is on a bit of a losing streak of his own. His is 0-4 in his last eight starts, despite pitching well in many of them,

The Blue Jays fly into The Bronx leading the Yankees by three games in the AL East. Kevin Gausman faces Cam Schlittler. Guasman allowed a .364 slugging percentage this season on a .212 BA. So overall the power against him is low, but he does give up a good number of extra-base hits. He is the kind of a pitcher that can be beat in a low scoring game as he may allow the home run that makes a difference. Schlittler makes the tenth start of his career, and so far owns a 2.61 ERA. The OBP against him stands at .312, but the defense turned four double plays behind him, caught two runners stealing, and another was picked off.

Games of the Day

Casey Mize takes on Mitch Keller as the Tigers continue their series in Pittsburgh. Having gone 3-7 in their last ten games, the Tigers no longer own the best record in baseball, but still have the biggest division lead at ten games over the Guardians. Mize goes for his tenth win of the season, trying to hit double digits for the first time. He walked just 22 batters in 88 2/3 innings. Much is made of Paul Skenes lack of support, but with a 3.48 ERA, he deserves better than a 3-10 record. He cut down his home runs per nine innings from 1.16 in 2024 to 0.68 this season.

The Yankees try to even their series with the Blue Jays as Cam Schlittler faces Max Scherzer. It’s not a great pitching matchup, but I do wonder how often two pitchers with three letter first names with an “a” in the middle and last names that start with “Sch” and end in “er” faced each other. My quick research says this would be the first time it happened in the year covered by the Day by Day Database, which goes back to 1920.

The Brewers send Jacob Misiorowski against the Mariners and Logan Gilbert. Since his arrival, and the eventual return of Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers rotation owns the second highest average game score in the majors. They’ve achieved that by limiting the negatives. The Mariners are fourth, as they go fairly deep in games.

Finally, in a game of very long names, Simeon Woods Richardson faces Yoshinobu Yamamoto as the Twins try to even their series with the Dodgers. Woods Richardson tries to win six games for the first time in his career. He limits power, holding the opposition to a .398 slugging percentage. Yamamoto is another starter suffering from a lack of support, just 8-7 despite a 2.59 ERA.
