Third Not a Charm

Max Scherzer takes the Blue Jays three-run lead into the bottom of the third inning and runs into trouble, too. He loads the bases on a double, single, and walk, the latter coming with one out. Teoscar Hernandez hits a line drive to centerfield, and Daulton Varsho makes a shoestring catch to hold it to a sacrifice fly. Then Tommy Edman hits a hard line drive down the first base line, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. snags it for the third out. Scherzer gets saved by his defense and Toronto leads Los Angeles 3-1.

We’ll see if Scherzer comes out for the fourth inning.

Playoffs Today

It’s game seven of the World Series, the game that even mildly interested baseball fans will watch. MLB went through a long game seven drought, the last one taking place in Houston in 2019. Both Max Scherzer and George Springer started that day, although on different team. Scherzer did not pitch great, walking four and striking out just three in five innings, leaving with the Nationals down 2-0. The bullpen gave up just two hits in four innings, striking out five, giving Washington time to come back and win the game 6-2.

The word on the street gives the Dodgers start to Shohei Ohtani. This will be his fourth post-season start, his first on three days rest. By starting the game Ohtani will be able to stay in as the designated hitter. He could come on in relief, but then the designated hitter disappears, so Ohtani would need to stay in the field to keep batting. This is the one weakness of the Ohtani two-way player situation. Los Angeles gets less flexibility. They can’t rest other players by allowing them to DH once in a while, and they can’t bring Ohtani on in relief without complicating the lineup for the rest of the game.

Ohtani pitched well in terms of three true outcomes, striking out 25, walking five, and allowing one home run in eighteen innings. He is charged with seven runs, however, so his 3.50 ERA doesn’t match his FIP. Part of that comes from a weak Dodgers bullpen.

Scherzer makes his third start of this post season and he has not pitched well. He struck out eight and walked five in ten innings, giving up three home runs along the way. He allowed five earned runs, but also three unearned runs. So Max didn’t help out his fielders when they let him down.

Of course, it’s all hands on deck, so don’t be surprised to see anyone coming out of the bullpen with the exceptions of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Kevin Gausman.

Enjoy this rare treat of a game!

Playoffs Today

Game three of the World Series is set to kickoff at 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays taking on Tyler Glasnow of the Dodgers. Scherzer will set a record tonight:

“I absolutely respect playing in a World Series, what that means and absolutely cherish these opportunities,” said Scherzer, who will become the first player to pitch in the World Series for four different teams. “So, yeah, when I get a chance to get the ball, man, this means everything.”

TorontoSun.com

Just to demonstrate the toughness of pitching in the post season, Scherzer overall stands 8-8 with a 3.75 ERA. In the World Series, he is a bit better, 2-1 with a 3.26 ERA. He struck out 19 in 19 1/3 innings, but walked 10 and allowed 21 hits.

Glasnow owns a 0.68 ERA this post season in 13 1/3 innings. He struck out 18 so far, leading to just seven hits allowed, although he did walk eight batters. I suspect these were defensive walks. Once again, the game likely comes down to Dodgers starters stopping the ability for the Blue Jays to put the ball in play, and staying in long enough to avoid the back of the LA bullpen.

Nalyed It

Josh Naylor of the Mariners takes Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays deep in the top of the second inning to give the Mariners a 1-0 lead in game four of the ALCS. Scherzer gives up home runs, but when he’s right, there is usually no one on base. In his regular season career, Naylor owns 104 home runs, evenly spilt between bases empty and men on.

Playoffs Today

The Brewers and Dodgers play the early west coast game on Thursday, with Milwaukee still working on pitching plans while the Dodgers send Tyler Glasnow to the mound. The game kicks off at 6 PM EDT, 3 PM PDT with the Dodgers up two games to none.

Jose Quintana of the Brewers likely will try to pitch the bulk of the innings for Milwaukee. He has yet to record a win in the post season covering nine appearances and seven starts. In the starter-relief role against the Cubs he pitched three shutout innings. Glasnow pitched both as a starter and reliever this post season, giving the Dodgers 7 2/3 shutout innings. He did walk five batters, but his ten strikeouts kept them from moving far once they reached base.

At 8 PM EDT, 5 PM PDT, the Blue Jays attempt to even the series with the Mariners who lead the ALCS 2-1. Max Scherzer takes on Luis Castillo. Scherzer did not make the short series roster against the Yankees, and makes his first start of the 2025 post-season. Scherzer makes his 31st playoff appearance and his 26th start. He stands 8-1 with a 3.78 ERA, showing just how difficult it can be to pitch against consistently good talent. This shows up in his walk numbers. In his regular season career he averaged 2.37 walks per nine IP, but 3.52 BB per 9 IP in the post-season. Castillo pitched well in his limited post-season career. In 25 2/3 innings he struck out 23, walked five allowed two home runs and only four runs total for 1.40 ERA. Despite that low ERA, he stands 2-2.

Enjoy!

Update: Aaron Ashby will once again serve as an opener for the Brewers.

Games of the Day

The Pirates at the Reds offer a great pitching matchup as the Reds pursue a wild card berth. Paul Skenes takes on Hunter Greene. Makes his 32nd start of the season, a full set of starts for someone in a five-man rotation. The Pirates did limit his innings, as he’ll come in under 190. Greene might have competed for the Cy Young award if he stayed healthy, with 11.07 K per 9 IP and just 2.12 BB per 9 IP.

The Tigers try to move ahead of the Guardians with Jack Flaherty facing Tanner Bibee. Flaherty offered a mixed bag of results down the stretch, and even when he pitched well he did not go deep in games. Bibee found his groove in September, including a shutout.

The Red Sox try to make it two in a row against the Blue Jays with Garrett Crochet battling Max Scherzer. Crochet owns a 2.13 ERA against the Blue Jays in 12 2/3 innings, despite issuing a lot of walks. Three of the six runs against him were unearned. Scherzer allowed 18 home runs this season in just 80 innings.

Finally, Arizona is still in the NL Wild Card race as they host the Dodgers. Blake Snell takes the mound against Ryne Nelson. Snell owns a 2.44 ERA in 55 1/3 innings, while Nelson comes in with a 3.34 mark in 148 innings. It’s been Nelson’s best season by far. His ERA is down 0.9 runs despite his FIPs looking very similar to 2024. His BABIP is down over 60 points, suggesting better defense behind him.

Games of the Day

The Guardians and Rays continue to jockey for position in the race for the third AL Wild Card slot. Cleveland sends Parker Messick against Tampa Bay and Drew Rasmussen. The rookie Messick is off to a good start to his career with a 2.08 ERA in three starts. He allowed just three walks and no home runs in 17 1/3 innings, so the 20 hits he allowed didn’t do much damage. Rasmussen stands 11 1/3 innings away from setting a new single season high for himself. He is unlikely to qualify for the AL ERA leaderboard, but his 10-5 record and 2.74 ERA helped keep the Rays in the race. Like Messick, he kept both his walk and home run rates low.

The second derivative game takes place in The Bronx as Max Scherzer of the Blue Jays faces Max Fried of the Yankees. They faced each other three times in the past, Scherzer dominating the contests. He recorded a 2-0 record with a 0.45 ERA, while Fried took two losses with a 3.18 ERA. Fried owns the upper hand over all this season, with low walk and home run rates, while Scherzer is very susceptible to the long ball.

There is no Sunday night game today.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

The Brewers go for a sweep of the Blue Jays as veterans Brandon Woodruff and Max Scherzer square off in Toronto. Woodruff gave a huge boost to the Milwaukee rotation after missing all of the 2024 season. He stands 5-1 in nine starts with a 3.10 ERA, with his K and BB rates better than is career averages. Scherzer makes his 13th start of the season, having spent time on the illjured list. His 3.82 ERA is in line with his previous two seasons. He no longer blows away batters with Ks, but he still issues few walks. His higher ERA in recent seasons has more to do with batters’ ability to take him deep.

The Tigers and Royals battle in Kansas City with Tarik Skubal taking on Michael Wacha. Detroit is pretty much guaranteed a playoff spot while the Royal try to surge for a wild berth. Skubal is locked in a tight race for the Cy Young Award with Garrett Crochet of the Red Sox, Crochet currently ahead in three of the four tracker point categories. He owns a 4.38 ERA against the Royals for his career, but allowed just two runs in 12 innings against KC this season. Wacha picked up his game in July, 4-1 with a 2.45 ERA since 7/11. He only struck out 29 batters in 47 2/3 innings, but good defense behind him led to just 38 hits allowed.

Games of the Day

The Phillies travel to Texas to take on the Rangers. Cristopher Sanchez battles Merrill Kelly. Sanchez, at seasonal age 28, heads for the best season of his career. His 2.40 ERA comes from a combination of raising his strikeout rate and lowering his home run rate. Batters slug just .316 against him this season. Kelly makes his second start for the Rangers after issuing no walks in 5 2/3 innings in his first start, striking out six.

The tepid Mets take on the red hot Brewers, 31-9 since June 19th a .775 win percentage. In the same time, the Mets are 18-23. Kodai Senga faces Brandon Woodruff. Senga comes into the game with a 2.31 ERA in 89 2/3 innings. He walked 44 batters but allowed just 68 hits, only eight of them homers. Woodruff makes his sixth start of the season, and walked just four batters in 28 1/3 innings, but allowed five homers.

Finally, a battle of legends and first place teams in Los Angeles as Max Scherzer leads the Blue Jays against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. Both came up in 2008, and Scherzer stands first in Ks in that time, with Kershaw third. Scherzer owns one more win, Kershaw ten more shutouts. Kershaw’s ERA is also 0.66 runs lower.

Games of the Day

Casey Mize takes on Mitch Keller as the Tigers continue their series in Pittsburgh. Having gone 3-7 in their last ten games, the Tigers no longer own the best record in baseball, but still have the biggest division lead at ten games over the Guardians. Mize goes for his tenth win of the season, trying to hit double digits for the first time. He walked just 22 batters in 88 2/3 innings. Much is made of Paul Skenes lack of support, but with a 3.48 ERA, he deserves better than a 3-10 record. He cut down his home runs per nine innings from 1.16 in 2024 to 0.68 this season.

The Yankees try to even their series with the Blue Jays as Cam Schlittler faces Max Scherzer. It’s not a great pitching matchup, but I do wonder how often two pitchers with three letter first names with an “a” in the middle and last names that start with “Sch” and end in “er” faced each other. My quick research says this would be the first time it happened in the year covered by the Day by Day Database, which goes back to 1920.

The Brewers send Jacob Misiorowski against the Mariners and Logan Gilbert. Since his arrival, and the eventual return of Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers rotation owns the second highest average game score in the majors. They’ve achieved that by limiting the negatives. The Mariners are fourth, as they go fairly deep in games.

Finally, in a game of very long names, Simeon Woods Richardson faces Yoshinobu Yamamoto as the Twins try to even their series with the Dodgers. Woods Richardson tries to win six games for the first time in his career. He limits power, holding the opposition to a .398 slugging percentage. Yamamoto is another starter suffering from a lack of support, just 8-7 despite a 2.59 ERA.

June 30, 2025

Games of the Day

The Yankees open a four-game series in Toronto, the Blue Jays in third place in the AL East, three games behind New York. Carlos Rodon takes on Max Scherzer in game one. Rodon brings a 2.92 ERA into the game. Batters in general failed to make solid contact against him this season, with an opposition BABIP of .225 and an opposition slugging percentage of .326. Scherzer allowed five runs in eight innings this season, only striking out five batters. He did manage to blow away AAA hitters, with 12 K in 8 innings.

The NL West features a matchup of Logan Webb of the Giants against Ryne Nelson of the Diamondbacks. Webb stands 7-5 on the season with a 2.52 ERA, but lost two games in which he allowed two runs. Nelson pitched better as a starter, with a 3.12 ERA in 34 2/3 innings starting versus a 4.50 ERA in 26 relief innings. He walks more batters starting, but does a better job of limiting hits.

Enjoy!

June 25, 2025

Games of the Day

It’s a battle of great young pitchers as Paul Skenes and the Pirates take on Jacob Misiorowski and the Brewers. Skenes quickly morphed from a thrower to a pitcher when you compare 2025 to 2024. He strikes out two fewer batters per nine innings, but both his opposition BABIP and batting average allowed are down. More balls in play with worse results allows him to go deeper in games. Misiorowski allowed just one hit, a home run, in his first eleven MLB innings. He walked five and struck out ten.

Max Scherzer returns to the mound as the Blue Jays face the Guardians and Gavin Williams. Scherzer only pitched 46 1/3 innings since the start of 2024, but walked just ten batters in that time with 41 K’s. Williams’ weakness comes from walks with 111 issued in his 233 1/3 career innings, 4.28 per nine IP.

The Rays try to keep their surge toward first place going with Drew Rasmussen facing the Royals and Michael Wacha. Rasmussen goes for his fifth consecutive season with an ERA under 3.00, but so far in only one of those did he pitch more than 100 innings. Wacha goes for his fourth straight season with an ERA in the low 3.00s, and he may get to 30 starts for the first time since 2017,

Misiorowski’s Crew

Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers on Thursday night became the fourteenth pitcher since 1920 to record at least four no hit innings in his MLB debut. Misiorowski went five shutout innings, walking four and striking out five as the Milwaukee beat St. Louis 6-0. Misiorowski left the game due to leg cramps.

Of the fourteen pitchers, eight accomplished the feat in a relief appearance. Ross Stripling of the Dodgers holds the record with 7 1/3 no hit innings on 4/8/2016. The most famous of the group would be Max Scherzer, who pitched four innings in relief for the Diamondbacks on 4/29/2008. Note that two pitchers, Bobo Holloman and Tyler Gilbert threw no-hitters in their first starts, but not their first appearance.

Min Max

The Toronto Blue Jays place Max Scherzer on the illjured list due to recurring problems with the thumb:

Prior to the finale of a four-game series against the Baltimore Orioles, the Jays announced that the 40-year-old veteran was headed to the 15-day injured list with what is being described as “right thumb inflammation.”

A frustrated Scherzer said following Saturday’s start — in which he allowed a pair of first-inning homers in an eventual 9-5 Jays loss to the O’s — that he would get the issue sorted out before returning to action. Now that process has begun.

“Yeah, I’m frustrated,” Scherzer said following the game. “I want to pitch. I know I can pitch. I know I can throw the ball really well. Unfortunately, I’ve got an issue going on. It’s coming from the thumb and I’ve got to address this.

TorontoSun.com

This is the same issue that hurt Scherzer’s 2024 season. The Blue Jays and Scherzer may eventually face the situation that the problem may not go away. Age may be rearing it’s ugly head.

March 29, 2025

Games of the Day

The first full slate of games for 2025 starts with the Brewers at the Yankees as former bomber Nestor Cortes faces new ace Max Fried. Cortes went 16-7 with a 3.22 ERA at home for the Yankees, walking just 2.3 batters per nine innings. Fried is 3-1 in five career starts against Milwaukee with a 2.67 ERA, but has not faced them since 2022.

Max Scherzer makes his debut for the Blue Jays as they host the Orioles and Dean Kremer. The Blue Jays knocked Kremer around a bit, as he owns 4.82 ERA against them in 56 innings. That includes eleven Blue Jays homers. Scherzer stands nine strikeouts behind Justin Verlander for most in the 21st century.

Verlander and the Giants takes on Nick Lodolo and the Reds. Lodolo pitched better in 2024 than his 4.76 ERA indicates. He was hurt by allowing a .506 slugging percentage with men on base.

Walker Buehler makes his Red Sox debut as the series in Texas continues against Tyler Mahle. The poorly named pitcher does not live up to his first name, as he walked just 2.4 batters per nine IP in his career. The Rangers signed Mahle last year while he was still recovering from Tommy John surgery, and he managed 12 2/3 innings in 2024. He struck out 14 and walked five in 17 spring training innings.

Changes, Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays acquired the following players for their 2025 active roster:

In the early days of his Baseball Abstracts, Bill James would talk about batting average as a percentage of a player’s offense. Over his career, that percentage for Santander came down from 43.7% in 2021 to 31.8% in 2024. In other words, he became a higher dimensional threat at the plate. The reduction came from an increase in power. His isolated power was a good .192 in 2021, a great .271 in 2024. What I find interesting, however, is that his OBP failed to go up with his power. Often team will use a pitch around strategy against that type of slugger. Some players, don’t take the walks, however, So Santander’s value gets pulled down since he wastes outs generating his power.

Gimenez produced a fantastic season at seasonal age 23 with a 6.1 fWAR on a .371 OBP and a .466 slugging percentage. In the two subsequent seasons he combined for 6.8 fWAR with a .306 OBP and a .368 slugging percentage. It tough to see what changed. In 2024 he did hit a lot more ground balls, but he was also thrown more sinkers. He’s making more contact, but his BABIP is way down. It really seems like 2022 was just an outlier for him. Maybe the Blue Jays picked up on something they can fix. If so, this could turn out to be a very good trade for Toronto.

Straw, like Gimenez, had a nice season he could not repeat. His 3.0 fWAR year came in 2021, 1.6 fWAR in the three years since. Straw, unlike Jimenez, was already in his prime, so it seems unlikely he’ll reach that height again, especially when he’ll be riding the bench.

Scherzer pitches at seasonal age 40 this year. He has not made 30 starts in a campaign since 2021. His strikeout rate dropped two per 9 innings in 2024 versus 2023. We’ll see if it comes back after a healthy winter. His walk rate remains low, but batters are hitting more balls out of the park, so Scherzer might want to start working power hitters more carefully. He is slotted in as the fourth starter, however, and he should fit that role fine.

Hoffman became a different pitcher when he moved to the Phillies two years ago. He raised his K rate and lowered his walk rate, dropping his ERAs into the twos. He dropped his percent of fastballs thrown and replaced those with sliders. That gave him closer stuff, and the Blue Jays were happy to pay for that.

Garcia returns to Toronto after a brief stint in Seattle. He saw his K rate rise in the last two seasons also, but he had high K rate seasons in the past as well. I don’t know if this counts as a real change for Toronto.

Sandlin is the youngster of the bullpen acquisitions, still in his prime as he pitches at seasonal age 28. He is a three-true outcome pitcher as his K, BB, and HR rates are high Home run really jumped the last two seasons. Not only did batters get more balls in the air against him, but the rate of those fly balls leaving the park tripled. He reduced his sinker usage in each of the last two seasons, and it seems to me like it was a bad move.

Toronto fans expressed unhappiness with losing out on Juan Soto. Most of these moves were not bad however. Santander gives him power, Gimenez gives them upside, Scherzer, if healthy, is a good starter on a good staff, and Hoffman should be an excellent closer. It’s not that bad of an off-season. Blue Jays fans hoped for more.

Max Over the Border

ESPN reports that the Blue Jays reached an agreement with Max Scherzer on a one-year contract. He will earn $15.5 million.

The 40-year-old Scherzer, one of the best pitchers of his generation and a future first-ballot Hall of Famer, is coming off an injury-plagued season with the Texas Rangers in which he made just nine starts and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. He didn’t make his first start until June 23 following surgery in the offseason to repair a herniated disk in his back. He then missed all of August with shoulder fatigue, returning to make one start in September before a hamstring injury ended his season.

Toronto nevertheless will slot Scherzer into its rotation, pending a physical, and add to what was already a strength, with veterans Kevin GausmanJose Berrios and Chris Bassitt, plus Bowden Francis, who was one of the best pitchers in baseball down the stretch in 2024.

ESPN.com

After spending seven month recovering from a herniated disc, and still not being 100%,I sympathize with Scherzer. In 2023, he wasn’t particularly great, posting a 2.2 fWAR after 10 seasons with an fWAR over 4.0 (not counting 2020).

The Blue Jays, with a good rotation, can look at Scherzer as back of the rotation starter. If he posts a 2.0 WAR this season, it will be money well spent by Toronto. Scherzer is well worth the risk.

Top of the Mound

From time to time Baseball Musings look at pitchers who reached the top of the Bill James Baseball Rankings over a particular time period, usually ten seasons. Today the comparison runs from 2020 through 2024.

Only four pitchers held the top spot in that time frame; Gerrit Cole, Jacob deGrom, Max Scherzer, and Zack Wheeler (three of them have a history with the Mets). Wheeler is the current leader. Cole spent the most time in first place. Note that over the seasons, Wheeler did a good job of gaining on Cole, but it took an injury to the Yankees ace for Wheeler to take over the top slot.

Scherzer and Cole fought for the top spot for a year, from the end of 2021 through the end of 2022.

Jacob deGrom occupies the most interesting slot on the list. He briefly held the top slot in the middle of 2021, then injuries took their toll on his ranking. Note the slope of deGrom’s ascension when he does pitch. Each time he comes back, either starting a new season or recovering from an injury he shoots up the rankings. It shows what we are missing by having this star injured so often. The Rangers have to hope it happens again in 2025.

A quick guide today.

Max Scherzer tries to end the Rangers four-game losing streak as he takes on Albert Suarez and the Orioles

The Cubs find themselves 10 1/2 games behind the Brewers as Jameson Taillon facing Colin Rea.

Best Pitchers of the Decade

The Bill James Starting Pitcher Rankings provides an insight into which starter is the best in the game today. It uses James’ game score to compute a power ranking. The entire history of starts is included for each pitcher, but the recent past counts more heavily.

This spreadsheet looks at pitchers from 2014-2023 who occupied the top spot for at least one day. The chart shows how those pitcher jockeyed for position across the decade. It was a time mostly dominated by four pitchers, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Gerrit Cole, and Justin Verlander. Each of those four spent at least 100 days as the top pitcher (April through September). Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, and Jacob deGrom all experience brief stints at the top. deGrom really had a Cody Jarrett moment. He pitches on 7/7/2021 to reach the top, only to be sidelined with forearm tightness for the rest of the season. He then suffers a shoulder injury the following spring and doesn’t pitch again until August.

Please notice on the graph how the top scores in a season dropped in the 2020s. Given the short 2020 season, no one had time to reach a 600. In the three subsequent seasons, no one reached it either. This reflects starters pitching less and less. Outs recorded in a start is a huge factor in the game score. Simply by going deep in games, Cole is able to maintain his top ranking. Notice how this helped Sandy Alcantara during the 2022 season.

The next decade should be different. We may see someone who averages under seven innings a start reach the peak for a while. Or we may see some youngster who is able to consistently go deep in games dominate the decade. It’s possible we never see a rank score of 600 again.

Update: Fixed the link to the current data.

Surgery for Scherzer

Max Scherzer underwent surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and will be out of the Texas rotation until the summer of 2024:

He joins Jacob deGrom and newly acquired right-hander Tyler Mahle on the injured list to begin 2024. DeGrom and Mahle are recovering from Tommy John surgery; both could return mid-to-late summer — along with Scherzer.

ESPN.com

The Rangers could field an awesome rotation going into the playoffs if everyone heals well. With their offense, that kind of staff would give them an excellent chance to be the first team to repeat as World Champions this century.

Texas Down Two

The Rangers lost Adolis Garcia and Max Scherzer to injuries:

Rangers All-Star right fielder Adolis Garcia, who has eight home runs and a record 22 RBI this postseason, was diagnosed with a strained oblique Tuesday while Max Scherzer was dealing with back tightness – and both were removed from the World Series roster ahead of Game 4.

MSN.com

Ezequiel Duran and Brock Burke take their places. Duran has a bit of pop, while Burke owned a 4.37 ERA, mostly due to home runs. He struck out 52 and walked just nine in 59 2/3 innings.

Playoffs Today

Game three of the 2023 World Series takes place at 8 PM EDT in Phoenix. Max Scherzer of the Rangers takes on Brandon Pfaadt of the Diamondbacks. Scherzer started his career with the Diamondbacks where he went 9-15 with a 3.86 ERA. He then went to the Tigers in a big three-way deal:

The Tigers get a good prospect in Jackson, and free up money to pay for Dontrelle Willis’s contract. I like Scherzer a lot. He strikes out batters, doesn’t walk too many. He and Verlander should turn into a nice 1-2 punch.

BaseballMusings.com

Edwin Jackson pitched poorly for the Diamondbacks in his half season there, while Ian Kennedy went 52-41 with a 3.92 ERA for the team. Scherzer had some flaws that he fixed when the Tigers sent him to the minors the next season.

That said, Scherzer, recovering from an injury, had a rough time in the ALCS, giving up seven hits, in 6 2/3 innings over two starts. Two of those hits left the park, helping him to a 9.45 ERA.

The rookie Pfaadt showed mixed results in his first post season. He made two starts without allowing a run, combing for ten innings of work. In his other two starts he allowed five runs in 6 2/3 innings. He does not go deep enough in games to get decisions, and overall his ERA stands at 2.70. Impressively, he walked three and struck out 22 in his 16 2/3 innings. In that regard, he’s been more Scherzer than Scherzer.

Playoffs Today

Today turns out to be a rare day when both LCS feature potentially clinching games. My favorite came in 1986, when the Mets and Astros dueled in extra innings, and the Red Sox completed a comeback from down 3-1 against the Angels.

The Diamondbacks try to force a game seven in Philadelphia starting at 5 PM EDT. Merrill Kelly battles Aaron Nola. Kelly allowed three home runs in game two, two to Kyle Schwarber. Kelly did a good job limiting home runs in the regular season, and he will need to find a way to return to that today. Nola won all three of his post-season starts, twice throwing short shutouts. He’s walked two and struck out 19 in the 2023 post season, helping him to a 0.96 ERA.

Max Scherzer takes the mound for the Rangers against Cristian Javier. The Rangers have to hope the game three start by Scherzer knocked some of the rust off as he returned from an injury. On the good side, he walked one and struck out four in his four innings. On the bad side, he allowed five hits and five runs. Javier proved tough to hit early in that game, as the Rangers put the ball in play against him, but most of those batted balls turned into outs. Javier allowed just two runs and four hits in 10 2/3 innings.

Wild Run

The Astros score first in game three of the NLCS. It starts with Yordan Alvarez getting hit on the back foot by a Max Scherzer pitch. He came around on a bases loaded wild pitch. Martin Maldonado then singled in two runs for a 3-0 lead, Maldonado thrown out at second. It’s the first lead of the series for the Astros.

The ALCS moves to Arlington Texas as the Astros visit the Rangers. Cristian Javier takes the mound for Houston against Max Scherzer. The Rangers lead the series 2-0.

Javier, at seasonal age 26, posted the worst season of his career. He did pitch more than ever before, racking up 162 innings for the first time. His strikeout rate came way down, however, from a career average entering the season of 11.2 per 9 IP to 8.8 per nine in 2023. That led to a much higher number of hits against him, including a high number of home runs, and a 4.56 ERA. He did turn that around in the ALDS, striking out nine in five innings and allowing just one hit against the Twins. For his career, in the post-season, he bends, but does not break, as he struck out 57 batters in 37 2/3 innings while walking 21 but allowing just 15 hits.

Scherzer owns a mixed history in the post-season. He stands 7-7 with a 3.53 ERA in twenty seven appearances, twenty two of them starts. He was at his best in 2019, when his six appearances led to a 3-0 record and 2.40 ERA to help the Nationals to a World Series championship. What strikes me about that post-season is that Scherzer walked 15 batters in 30 innings. Overall he walked 51 batters in 133 1/3 innings. Great pitchers like Scherzer challenge batters in the strike zone. Great hitters, however, can hit those pitches, and one tends to face great hitters in the post-season. The season he avoided the zone a bit led to his greatest success.

Enjoy!

Scherzer Done

Max Scherzer suffered a serious injury on Tuesday night:

On the other hand, the Rangers offense awakened in Toronto, and if a team is scoring a lot of runs, the pitching doesn’t need to be that good.
