In and Out

The Dodgers celebrated a big night in Los Angeles as Clayton Kershaw made his last regular season start at Dodger Stadium and the team clinched a playoff spot for the 13th season in a row with a 6-3 win over the Giants. We know four of the six playoff teams in the NL, but no team in the AL is 100% sure of a post-season slot.

Drawing a low line at 500 IP, Kershaw ranks fourth in ERA as a Dodgers pitcher at Dodger Stadium. Koufax tops the list with a 1.37 ERA in 715 1/3 innings. Kershaw comes in at 2.26, pitching 1479 2/3 innings. Don Sutton tops the innings leaders at the park with 2005 2/3 innings.

A Real Retirement

Clayton Kershaw reached the decision to retire from baseball at the end of the 2025 season:

“I don’t think I put enough merit on it at times, what it means to be able to be in one organization for your entire career,” Kershaw said earlier this year. “You look at people throughout all of sports that have been able to do that, and it is special, it is. I don’t want to lose sight of that. Getting to be here for my whole career, however long that is, is definitely a goal.”

MLB.com

Kershaw pitched well enough this season that some team would have signed him next year. He is still good at limiting walks and home runs. I suspect the series of injuries over the last few seasons wore on him, and this way he’s still healthy enough to enjoy his family, and remain a single team player.

Kershaw’s career started in 2008, and in that time he owns the lowest ERA of any pitcher with at least 1000 innings. Jacob deGrom is close, but in 1300 fewer innings. He should be a first ballot Hall of Famer.

Games of the Day

The Yankees send Max Fried against the Red Sox and Brayan Bello as the teams vie for the top Wild Card slot in the AL. Fried pitched well in his two outings against Boston this season, striking out 16 and allowing two runs in 13 innings. Bello pitched even better, not allowing a run in 14 innings.

The other great rivalry playing out today pits the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw against the Giants and Logan Webb. Kershaw owns a 2.00 ERA career versus the Giants. That’s the lowest ERA for a pitcher who made at least 40 starts against the Giants since the start of the live ball era in 1920. He is ahead of Robin Roberts by 0.77 runs! Webb allowed three home runs to the Dodgers in 12 1/3 innings this season.

Finally, the Angels try to play spoilers to the Mariners as Mitch Farris battles Bryan Woo. The rookie Farris makes his third career start, having allowed just six hits and three runs in his first eleven innings. Woo, who exceeded his 2024 inning total by over 50 IP owns a 3.02 ERA. He owns just one decision, a win, in his seven start against the Angels.

Games of the Day

The Rangers visit the Blue Jays with Jacob deGrom facing Chris Bassitt. deGrom is going through a bit of a rough patch, allowing 13 runs in his last three games. He gave up five home runs in those 17 innings. Bassitt stands third in the majors since 2022 in double plays induced.

The Padres lead the Dodgers by one game in the NL West as the two teams battle in Los Angeles. The Padres have yet to name a starter to face Clayton Kershaw. I have seen reports it will be Randy Vasquez. Vasquez owns a 3.93 ERA this season, but that is about two runs better than his FIPs. Kershaw struck out just 46 batters in 71 2/3 innings this year, but still pitches well, with a 3.14 ERA. Batter continue to have trouble taking him deep.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

The Phillies travel to Texas to take on the Rangers. Cristopher Sanchez battles Merrill Kelly. Sanchez, at seasonal age 28, heads for the best season of his career. His 2.40 ERA comes from a combination of raising his strikeout rate and lowering his home run rate. Batters slug just .316 against him this season. Kelly makes his second start for the Rangers after issuing no walks in 5 2/3 innings in his first start, striking out six.

The tepid Mets take on the red hot Brewers, 31-9 since June 19th a .775 win percentage. In the same time, the Mets are 18-23. Kodai Senga faces Brandon Woodruff. Senga comes into the game with a 2.31 ERA in 89 2/3 innings. He walked 44 batters but allowed just 68 hits, only eight of them homers. Woodruff makes his sixth start of the season, and walked just four batters in 28 1/3 innings, but allowed five homers.

Finally, a battle of legends and first place teams in Los Angeles as Max Scherzer leads the Blue Jays against Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers. Both came up in 2008, and Scherzer stands first in Ks in that time, with Kershaw third. Scherzer owns one more win, Kershaw ten more shutouts. Kershaw’s ERA is also 0.66 runs lower.

Games of the Day

The Guardians try to gain more ground on the Tigers as they play a double header at Kansas City. Game one is the better matchup as Gavin Williams takes on Michael Wacha. Williams puts men on base with a .327 opposition OBP, but limits power with a .369 opposition slugging percentage. Wacha is similar but slightly better, with a ,305 OBP and a .364 slugging percentage allowed.

Clayton Kershaw, Dodgers legend, takes the mound at Fenway against Red Sox ace Garrett Crochet. If this is Kershaw’s final season, he is trying to go out on top with a 4-1 record and a 3.27 ERA. His strikeout rate is down from his career averages, but he remains stingy with walks and home runs. Crochet is at the height of his game, 5-0 in his last seven starts with a 1.90 ERA. He allowed just two home runs in that span.

Finally, the Mets face the Giants with David Peterson battling Robbie Ray. They own nearly identical ERAs, 2.90 for Peterson, 2.92 for Ray. Peterson gets there with few walks and home runs, while Ray blows batters away with Ks.

Out K’ing Kershaw

Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers gave up a lead-off home run to Shohei Ohtani, and that was the only run the Dodgers would score. The rookie starter struck out a dozen in six innings as the Brewers took the game 3-1. Kershaw pitched well, allowing two runs in six innings, but only struck out three.

Misiorowski up his K total to 33 in 25 2/3 innings. He only walked on batter tonight, as walks were his weakness through his first four starts. His ERA now stands at 2.81.

July 8, 2025

Games of the Day

There will be something old, new, and blue as the Dodgers send Clayton Kershaw against rookie Jacob Misiorowski in Milwaukee. Kershaw’s three true outcome rates this season are all in the wrong direction comparted to his career norms, but he remains tough to hit despite the lack of strikeouts. Misiorowski suffered his first rough start last time out against the Mets, and the Dodgers offer another tough offense.

The Guardians send Joey Cantillo against the Astros and Hunter Brown. Cantillo makes his second start after 21 relief appearances and hopes to give Cleveland a two-game win streak. In his 70 1/3 MLB innings over two seasons, Cantillo struck out 85 batters in 70 1/3 innings. Brown leads the majors in ERA at 1.82, holding batters to just 65 hits in 104 innings.

Finally, Taijuan Walker faces Robbie Ray as the Phillies battle the Giants. Walker nearly cut his ERA in half from last season. He dropped it from 7.10 to 3.64 by improving all his three true outcomes, but especially by cutting his home run rate. Ray pitched very well with runners in scoring position, allowing 12 hits in 74 PA.

Kershaw and the Strikeout Records

Clayton Kershaw reached the 3000 strikeout milestone Wednesday night.

The 3,000-strikeout club is already an exclusive group of 20, and Kershaw is just the fourth left-hander to achieve the feat, joining CC Sabathia, Randy Johnson and Steve Carlton. He achieved the feat with his family in the stands, among the only home crowd he has known in his big league career.

MLB.com

Note that 3000 strikeouts is a recent phenomenon. Of the 20 members of the club, 18 achieved it since the start of the 1965 season (that year gives use the complete careers of Steve Carlton and Nolan Ryan). Note that there are two ways to get to that level; longevity in terms of innings (Greg Maddux) or a high K rate (Max Scherzer). The only two pitchers who combined both in this era were Nolan Ryan, Randy Johnson, and Rogers Clemens, the top three on the list.

Despite strikeouts per game or PA staying near all-time highs, it’s unlikely that anyone will surpass Nolan Ryan’s record, or even reach 5000 K again. Pitchers are both limited in their number of starts, and innings in those starts. Maddux was able to keep his pitch counts low to go deep in games, but that’s tougher to do if the main weapon used by a pitcher is the K. Of course, it’s tougher to be an iron man today, also. Kershaw, Verlander, and Scherzer all saw injuries sideline them when they could have accumulated a few hundred more Ks. More likely we will see more likely Kershaw, fast to 3000 K in terms of innings, but lacking enough innings to rank high on the leaderboard.

Games of the Day

The Twins make a bid for a thirteen game hit streak as they continue their series in Milwaukee. Pablo Lopez faces Tobias Myers. Since joining the Twins, Lopez owns a 29-20 record in 71 starts with a 3.76 ERA. That ERA is down to 2.77 this year. He improved his strikeout rate to 1.6 per nine in 2025, down from his 2.1 for his Twins career. Myers pitched just 16 1/3 innings this season, and he’s been a bit wild, walking ten.

Tyler Anderson of the Angels takes on the Dodgers in the last game of the day. Instead of concentrating on Anderson’s excellent 2.58 ERA, most of the attention will go to the return to Clayton Kershaw to the Dodgers rotation. Kershaw wants to go out because he can’t perform well, not because an injury stopped him:

“Look, if I get out there and get shelled and I’m not any good anymore and just the time is the time, then that’s one thing,” he added. “If another hitter gets the best of me, that’s one thing. But I’m not going to let myself do it to myself.”

SI.com

Anderson’s 2.58 is in line with the best season of his career, his lone stint with the Dodgers in 2022. Note that his walk and home run rates are up from that season, but his opposition BABIP stands at a very low .197.

Enjoy!

August 18, 2024

Games of the Day

The Royals face the Reds with Brady Singer facing Andrew Abbott. Singer improved all three of his three true outcomes versus 2023, lowering his ERA over two runs. Abbott’s K rate is down over 2 strikeouts per nine from his rookie season, but he makes up for it by a 44 point drop in his BABIP.

The Brewers go for a sweep of the Guardians in Milwaukee as Ben Lively takes on Colin Rea. Lively brings a 3.71 ERA into the game thanks in part to a solid walk rate of 3 per nine innings. Rea’s ERA stands at 3.72 for the same reason, with an even lower walk rate of 2.5 per 9 IP.

Finally, veterans battle in St. Louis as Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against Sonny Gray. Kershaw owns a 3.50 ERA, high for him, but allowed just one home run and five walks in 18 innings. Gray’s ERA doesn’t match his high K rate and low walk rate. his FIP and xFIP are 3.14 and 2.73. He’s allowed power with men on base.

Passing Judgement

Shohei Ohtani knocked out a double and a home run Thursday afternoon to help beat the Giants 6-4. That breaks the tie with Aaron Judge of the Yankees, giving Ohtani 62 EXBH to Judge’s 60. It looked like Judge was on his way to an historic EXBH season earlier in the year, but he slowed lately, and now it will be a race for both sluggers to see if either can reach 100 extras for the season.

Clayton Kershaw pitched four innings in his return, giving up six hit while walking two and striking out six. The Giants managed to score two runs against him.

Staying On

Two single team veterans reached deals to remain in place for the near future. First, Clayton Kershaw agreed to a one-year deal with the Dodgers with an option for a second season.

Kershaw, who turns 36 in March, will take his physical at the Dodgers’ spring training complex in Glendale, Arizona, within the next day or two, a source told ESPN. The Athletic reported that he will sign a one-year contract that includes a player option for 2025, creating the possibility that he could pitch in the same rotation as Shohei Ohtani next year.

Kershaw will spend at least the first half of the year recovering from offseason shoulder surgery.

ESPN.com

The injuries keep diminishing Kershaw’s playing time, and one would think that at some point he might just want to avoid those and find a new line of work.

Meanwhile, Jose Altuve signed a five-year deal with the Astros:

The deal is worth $125 million, sources told ESPN, taking him all the way through his age-39 season.

“He’s a franchise-type player; one of the best in Houston history,” owner Jim Crane said at the owners meetings in Orlando. “And we hope someday he’s a Hall of Famer.”

The Astros announced the agreement on social media, calling their superstar an “Astro For Life.” The 33-year-old Altuve was heading into his final year before free agency. His new deal begins in 2025 and takes him through 2029.

ESPN.com

With the exception of the pandemic shortened 2020 season, Altuve posted fWARs of at least 4.0 every season since 2014. That’s an impressive run. The five year deal values him at about 2.25 WAR per year, which seems entirely reasonable.

For players whose last season was 1969 or later (including active players) 120 played for one team (minimum 10 seasons). Note that they didn’t need to be stars. Nick Ahmed, Gates Brown, Brett Gardner, Ed Kranepool, and Biff Pocoroba are all on the list. Still, there is a lot of greatness in the group, and it looks like Kershaw and Altuve will someday be permanently in the list.

Best Pitchers of the Decade

The Bill James Starting Pitcher Rankings provides an insight into which starter is the best in the game today. It uses James’ game score to compute a power ranking. The entire history of starts is included for each pitcher, but the recent past counts more heavily.

This spreadsheet looks at pitchers from 2014-2023 who occupied the top spot for at least one day. The chart shows how those pitcher jockeyed for position across the decade. It was a time mostly dominated by four pitchers, Clayton Kershaw, Max Scherzer, Gerrit Cole, and Justin Verlander. Each of those four spent at least 100 days as the top pitcher (April through September). Chris Sale, Corey Kluber, and Jacob deGrom all experience brief stints at the top. deGrom really had a Cody Jarrett moment. He pitches on 7/7/2021 to reach the top, only to be sidelined with forearm tightness for the rest of the season. He then suffers a shoulder injury the following spring and doesn’t pitch again until August.

Please notice on the graph how the top scores in a season dropped in the 2020s. Given the short 2020 season, no one had time to reach a 600. In the three subsequent seasons, no one reached it either. This reflects starters pitching less and less. Outs recorded in a start is a huge factor in the game score. Simply by going deep in games, Cole is able to maintain his top ranking. Notice how this helped Sandy Alcantara during the 2022 season.

The next decade should be different. We may see someone who averages under seven innings a start reach the peak for a while. Or we may see some youngster who is able to consistently go deep in games dominate the decade. It’s possible we never see a rank score of 600 again.

Update: Fixed the link to the current data.

Kershaw Under the Knife

Clayton Kershaw underwent shoulder surgery and will be sidelined until the summer of 2024:

The 35-year-old wrote in a social media post that the surgery with Dodgers head team physician Dr. Neal ElAttrache was to repair the glenohumeral ligaments and his shoulder capsule. There are three glenohumeral ligaments and they reinforce the joint capsule.

“I am hopeful to return to play at some point next summer,” Kershaw wrote. “Thanks for your prayers!”

Kershaw was sidelined for six weeks by the shoulder injury, and it hampered him during the final couple of months of the season. Neither he nor the team said much about his shoulder during the season.

ESPN.com

Kershaw is a free agent, but of course this type of surgery might put a damper on teams signing him right away. According to the article, the Dodgers want him back. We’ll see how this works out, but I would not expect a team other than the Dodgers to sign him early.

Five for Fighting

The first five Arizona batters who face Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers collect hits, the last a three-run homer by Gabriel Moreno, who doesn’t appear to have a concussion. The Diamondbacks lead 5-0 nothing without recording an out.

Update: This is the first time Kershaw gave up hits to the first five batters at the start of a game.

Update: Kershaw gets an out, but then gives up a walk and a double for a 6-0 Arizona lead. The Dodgers pull Kershaw from the game.

Playoffs Today

The Rangers send Andrew Heaney against the Orioles and Kyle Bradish to kick off the League Division Series round. Heaney posted a 4.15 ERA in 2023, mostly due to high walk and home run rates. He limited power with men on base in 2023, but the trade off was many more hits allowed. Bradish posted the fourth lowest ERA in the majors, strong in both limiting walks and home runs.

The second game of the day features the Twins at the Astros with Bailey Ober battling Justin Verlander. Ober is owns a high K rate with a low walk rate, so his pitches tend to look like they are in the strike zone. The Astros are very good at putting the ball in play, and Ober should give them the opportunity to do that. Verlander, at seasonal age 40, does not strike out batters at a high rate, but he still manages to limit hits and walks. That prevents his home runs allowed from doing too much damage.

The first NLDS game take place in Atlanta where the Phillies send Ranger Suarez against the Braves and Spencer Strider. Suarez took a step backward in 2023, with his BABIP coming in at .324. That rise came despite an improvement in the Phillies defense. He allowed a higher percentage of line drives. Strider topped the majors with 20 wins. He pitched deep into games, allowing the Braves scoring machine to make his 3.86 ERA low enough for Ws. He went 4-0 with a 2.42 ERA against the Phillies as he struck out 38 and walked three in 26 innings pitched.

Finally, Merrill Kelly and the Diamondbacks face the man, the myth, and the legend, Clayton Kershaw in Los Angeles. Kelly makes his post-season debut. Over the last two season Kelly pitched consistently well, with a 25-16 record on a 3.33 ERA. In a high home run environment, he does a good job of limiting longballs. He pitches less well against the Dodgers, however. Kershaw owns a long post-season history, although compared to his regular season exploits, it’s a bit disappointing.

Enjoy!

Wainwright at 200

Adam Wainwright pitched seven shutout innings Monday night to win his 200th game. It’s nice to see that in a year in which the former star pitched terribly, he really earned his milestone with a great outing.

There is now speculation that we may not see many more 200 win pitchers. I tend to disagree with blanket statements like that. I suspect we will see another 300 game winner in my lifetime.

While it is true that starters don’t pitch as much as in the past, when we talk about 200 and 300 game winners, we talk about elite pitchers. Those still stay in game long enough to get wins.

What concerns me more is the durability of those elite pitchers. Clayton Kershaw is a great example. Kershaw posted six 30 start campaigns through his seasonal age 27 season, for of those a complete 33 start year. If you take 33 starts as a full, healthy season, Kershaw missed 61 starts since then. Kershaw, given his great ERAs and the Dodgers offense could have turned those missing 61 starts into 30 wins. With 239 wins instead of 209, people getting to 300 for Kershaw might not seem like such a stretch.

Kershaw has 420 starts (and 3 relief appearances) through his age 35 season right now. Greg Maddux had 501 starts (and 4 relief apperances) through the same age, and 257 wins. One reason Maddux could make so many starts was his efficiency. He didn’t waste effort in recording outs.

MLB teams seem to be obsessed with pitch speed, but there are people with lower velocity that can hit spots and change speed enough to fool batters. They might give a club 33 starts a season for ten or twelve years. Right now, those pitchers might be cheap to sign as well. If there is a market inefficiency to exploit there, I hope some team finds it. We can use more pitchers who don’t require multiple Tommy John surgeries.

Games of the Day

The Twins and Guardians go at it again after Minnesota took Cleveland to the woodshed on Monday. The Twins won 20-6, and the game was so lopsided that position player David Fry pitched four innings. Sonny Gray and Tanner Bibee take the mound Tuesday. Gray pitched well against the Guardians his season, owning a 2.89 ERA in three starts. He is just 0-1, however. Bibee struck out 14 Twins in 10 innings, but also gave up 10 hits and four walks for a 4.50 ERA.

The Dodgers visit the Marlins with Clayton Kershaw battling Jesus Luzardo. Kershaw owns a 2.06 career ERA in Miami, but with just a 4-3 record in seven starts. Luzardo took his K rate to a new level this season, with 175 strikeouts in 149 1/3 innings.

The Astros dominated the Rangers on Monday with a 13-6 win that put Texas in third place in the AL West. They continue the series in Arlington with Framber Valdez taking on Nathan Eovaldi. The Rangers handled Valdez well this season, as he owns a 6.52 ERA against them in two starts. He allowed 12 hits and four walks in 9 2/3 innings. Eovaldi has not pitched in the majors since July. He’s been tough to hit this season with a .208/.270/.340 opponents slash line.

Enjoy!

August 29, 2023

Games of the Day

Florida teams square off in Miami as the Rays send Aaron Civale against Sandy Alcantara. Civale overall allowed just six home runs this season in 97 1/3 innings, one in 20 1/3 innings for the Rays. Alcantara had a bit of an off year, but his ERA stands at 3.03 since the All-Star Break, down from 4.72 before the break. The improvement appears to be from fewer walks.

Young pitchers square off in Boston with JP France of the Astros facing Brayan Bello of the Red Sox. France pitched great on the road this season, 5-2 with a 1.92 ERA. Only three of his 14 home runs came away from Houston. Bello does a good job of limiting power with a .429 slugging percentage allowed. That drops to .368 with runners on base, when power can do the most damage.

Corbin Burnes faces Justin Steele as the Brewers try to push the Cubs farther down in the standings. Only four of Burnes’ nine appearances in Chicago came as starts, and he tended to walk batters there at a higher rate than usual for him. Steele goes for his fifteenth win of the season. His 2.80 ERA comes from a combination of limiting walks and home runs.

Finally, Merrill Kelly of the Diamondbacks tries to stop the Dodgers onslaught as he faces Clayton Kershaw. The two met three times in the past, with Kershaw going 3-0 with a 0.48 ERA, Kelly posting an 0-3 record with a 5.82 ERA.

Enjoy!

August 23, 2023

Games of the Day

Alex Cobb takes on Michael Lorenzen as the Phillies go for a sweep of the Giants. Cobb owns a 3.75 ERA overall this season, but that balloons to 5.08 on the road. He allowed nine of this 14 home runs away. Lorenzen owns a 3.57 ERA overall this season and does a good job of limiting both walks and home runs.

The Reds send Andrew Abbott against Shohei Ohtani of the Angels. The rookie Abbott owns a 2.99 ERA in 81 1/3 innings, and allowed just four of his eleven home run on the road. The Angels own a 9-16 record since deciding to hold onto Ohtani on July 26th. Note that Ohtani pitched well in that time frame, with a 0.00 ERA in 19 innings with one unearned run allowed. The Mariners at 20-5 have the best record in baseball in that time frame, and LAnaheim sits ten games behind the Seattle. Meanwhile, the Rangers fell off, and one game now separates the Rangers, Astros, and Mariners in the AL West.

The Guardians try to make it two in a row against Los Angeles as they host the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw takes on Xzavion Curry. Kershaw won’t qualify for the ERA title, but he owns the best ERA in the majors among pitchers with at least 100 IP, 2.48. Curry, with low walk and K rates, still manages to limit hits, holding batters to a .240/.293/.399 slash line. He does give up some power, but with few runners on base it does little damage.

Enjoy!

August 16, 2023

Games of the Day

The Rays try to score a run against the Giants as they send Aaron Civale against Ryan Walker. Civale walked one and struck out six in 9 1/3 innings for the Rays without allowing a home run, but got knocked around for sixteen hits. Walker does well as an opener, with a 2.40 ERA in nine starts covering 15 innings. He struck out 23, but walked seven.

Justin Verlander faces Jesus Luzardo as the Astros finish their series with the Marlins. Overall, Verlander owns a 3.19 ERA. While his strikeout rate is down this season, he still manages to limit hits. Luzardo owns a 3.31 ERA at home versus 4.85 on the road. It comes down to him doing a much better job of limiting hits in Miami.

Finally, the Brewers send Wade Miley against the Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw. Miley struck out just 53 batters in 77 2/3 innings, but holds opponents to a .225 BA and a .289 OBP. Kershaw continues to age well in terms of averages. His 2.51 ERA is right on his 2.48 career mark. He just doesn’t stay healthy, so the Dodgers depend on him for 22 starts instead of 32.

Enjoy!

August 10, 2023

Games of the Day

Toronto and Cleveland may produce more than one run this afternoon as Alek Manoah takes on Noah Syndergaard. Manoah continues to struggle with his control since his return from the minors, walking five batters per nine innings. Syndergaard pitched one good game and one bad game since joining the Guardians. He struck out just three batters in 11 1/3 innings.

The Rockies face the Dodgers in Los Angeles as Ty Blach gets to battle Clayton Kershaw as Kershaw returns from the illjured list. Blach pitched better as a starter this season. He owns a 2.84 ERA in that role, versus 6.75 as a reliever. Kershaw for his career is 27-11 against the Rockies with a 3.33 ERA. At home, however, his ERA against the Rockies stands at 1.81.

July 3, 2023

Games of the Day

The Braves and Guardians rematch the 1996 World Series (different dians, however) with Bryce Elder facing Gavin Williams. Elder so far improved on his rookie season of 2022, lowering his ERA from 3.17 to 2.44 by greatly reducing his walk rate. The rookie Williams allowed just five hits in his first 12 2/3 innings as he makes his third start. He’s yet to record a decision with his 2.84 ERA.

Two struggling southern California teams meet in San Diego as Jaime Barria of the Angels takes on Blake Snell of the Padres. Barria’s low ERA comes mostly from his relief work. As a starter, he allowed five home runs in 22 1/3 innings. Snell is one of the top strikeout rate pitchers in the majors since his first season of 2016. Note that he does not pitch as much as some of the others at the top, only reaching the ERA qualifying level of 162 innings once in his career.

Finally, All-Stars are scheduled to battle at Dodger Stadium as Mitch Keller of the Pirates takes the hill against Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers. Keller goes for hit tenth win of the season. He pitched to a higher ERA on the road, 4.02 versus 2.63 at home, but still managed to post a 4-2 record in road games. Kershaw is questionable, and may go on the illjured list instead of making the start. That would give him through the All-Star break to heal his shoulder.

Enjoy!

Kershaw is for K

Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers struck out nine Reds batters Thursday afternoon on his way to seven shutout innings and a 6-0 Dodgers win. He recorded that number of Ks for the 53rd time in his career.

This spreadsheet and graph show the distribution of Kershaw starts by Ks recorded. His nine strikeout bin is his third highest. Seven K in a game is the most at 62, with six just behind at 59. If you bin all games with at least 10 K together, they reach 68.

June 2, 2023

Games of the Day

The Mariners travel to Texas to take on the Rangers with Luis Castillo and Jon Gray on the mound. Castillo proved to be a good acquisition for Seattle, now 8-4 with a 2.93 ERA in 22 starts. He struck out 153 batters in 129 innings. Gray got hit hard at home this season, with a 4.09 ERA thanks to five home runs in 22 innings. He allowed three home runs on the road in 35 2/3 innings, for a 2.02 ERA.

The Guardians and Twins play game two of their series with Aaron Civale facing Bailey Ober. Civale makes his third start of the season. He allowed just two walks and no home runs in his first 12 2/3 innings. Ober tries to reach four wins for the first time in his career. He allowed all three of his home runs at home this season.

The Angels send Shohei Ohtani in his role as pitcher/DH against the Astros and Framber Valdez. Ohtani is blowing away batters again this season, with 90 K in 65 innings. The Sushi Slammers, Mike Trout and Ohtani, slug rather poorly against Valdez, with only one extra-base hit against Valdez in 44 combined at bats.

Finally, the Yankees visit the Dodgers with Luis Serverino battling Clayton Kershaw. Back from injury, Serverino owns a 1.59 ERA in two starts. He allowed just five hits in 11 1/3 innings. Kershaw is next to untouchable at home this season, 3-1 with a 1.13 ERA. He allowed 16 hits and one walk with striking out 34. The also features the top two hitters in the majors right now, Freddie Freeman and Aaron Judge.

The day begins with a 1 PM EDT game between the Padres and the Yankees. Michael Wacha takes on Luis Severino. The Padres win with Wacha as he stands 5-1, and San Diego is 7-2 in his nine games. He should be up for May pitcher of the month honors as he owns a 0.36 ERA in four starts, allowing just eleven hits in 25 innings. Severino made a successful return from the illjured list with one walk and five strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings.

Framber Valdez of the Astros tries to extend the Oakland winning streak as he faces rookie Hogan Harris. Valdez is great, coming into the game with a 2.45 ERA. He hasn’t gotten much support, with the Astros scoring two runs or less in five of his starts, helping put his record at 4-4. Hogan pitched 1/3 on an inning in his first MLB appearance. He allowed just one hit, but walked five batter and hit another for an ERA of 162.00. HOGAN!

In Tampa Bay, Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers returns from the bereavement list while Tyler Glasnow returns from the illjured list as the Dodgers battle the Rays. Kershaw owns a 2.98 ERA with his only problem this season coming from seven home runs allowed in 57 1/3 innings. Glasnow made a short appearance in 2022 after returning from Tommy John surgery. He boosts a rotation that managed to weather a spate of injuries.

Games of the Day

The last place Nationals visit the second place Marlins as Josiah Gray faces Jesus Luzardo. The Nationals sit just two games behind Miami, and if Washington sweeps the three game series they could wind up in second place in the division. The Nationals are 8-6 so far in May. Gray owns a 2.96 ERA thanks to a .196 BA allowed with runners in scoring position. All fourteen of the extra-base hits against him came with the bases empty. The damage against Luzardo came mostly on the road. He allowed a .234/.308/.374 slash line at home.

The Cubs send Justin Steele against the Astros and Cristian Javier. Steele doesn’t bend this season, limiting opponents to just 37 hits in 49 1/3 innings, just two of those home runs. That’s good for a 1.82 ERA. Javier allowed just two of his six home runs at home this season.

Finally, Bailey Ober of the Twins faces Clayton Kershaw of the Dodgers in a battle of first place teams. Ober owns a 1.85 ERA in 24 1/3 innings. He struck out 22 and walked just six. Kershaw owns a 2.36 ERA, and eight of sixteen runs he allowed came on the seven home runs against him.

Games of the Day

If you like slugfests, go to your local pub at 12:30 PM EDT for the Athletics against the Yankees. Kyle Muller with a 6.62 ERA takes the mound for Oakland, while Jhony Brito with a 6.02 ERA twirls for New York. Batters slug .475 against Brito, .500 against Muller.

Go to lunch a little later if you prefer a pitching duel as Clayton Kershaw leads the Dodgers against Wade Miley in Milwaukee. Kershaw allowed six home runs in 42 2/3 innings, but with few hits and walks allowed his ERA stands at 2.53. Miley struck out 21 and walked six in 35 innings, so batters are putting the ball in play. Those are only good for a .264 BABIP, so even without shifts batters can’t find the holes.

The Rangers and Mariners give the west coast a nice lunch battle, on the air at 12:40 PDT. Dane Dunning faces Luis Castillo. Dunning makes his second start of 2023 after eight relief appearances. Like Miley, batters put the ball in play against Dunning, but managed just 14 hits in 25 1/3 innings. Castillo pitches well but does not get decisions as he stands 2-0 in seven starts with a 2.38 ERA. The Mariners are 4-3 in his starts.

I like the Mets and Reds match-up of Justin Verlander and Hunter Greene, just for the age contrast. Both blow away batters, but Verlander was better at limiting home runs at a young age.

Finally, Jordan Montgomery and the Cardinals battle the Cubs and Justin Steele. Montgomery pitched well this season, but was the victim of the Cardinals offense scoring nothing three times. Steele continued his improvement of 2021, bring his ERA down to 1.45 in 43 1/3 innings. He allowed just 30 hits and two home runs.

Games of the Day

The Yankees head to Tampa Bay to take on the first place Rays. Jhony Brito faces Yonny Chirinos. The AL East standings are a bit upside down, with the Blue Jays and Yankees at the bottom of the standings, the Rays and Orioles on top. Brito’s 5.56 ERA is mostly due to him getting pounded by the Twins in two starts, allowing ten runs in 3 1/3 innings. In his other 19 1/3 innings he allowed four runs. The Rays, however, can pound the ball, too. Chirinos makes his first start of the season after four relief appearances. He went long in his bullpen work, picking up 14 innings in four games with a 0.64 ERA.

It’s a classic matchup of great veterans on the west coast as Clayton Kershaw and the Dodgers visit Yu Darvish and the Padres. Kershaw seems to be back to his abilities of the mid teens, with a 1.89 ERA in six starts. He allows home runs more frequently, but with just 24 hits and five walks allowed in 38 innings, the home runs don’t do much damage. Darvish walks batters at a high rate this season, already allowing twelve free passes after giving up 37 all last year.

The Nationals rotation is starting to look better, thanks in part to Josiah Gray. He battles the Diamondbacks and Merrill Kelly in Arizona. Entering his prime this season, Gray owns a 2.67 ERA. That may be a bit of an illusion, however, as his FIPs are in the fours. Throughout his career, however, Gray owns a low BABIP against, and limiting hits can limit RBI. Kelly pitched poorly at home this season, allowing both his home runs and eight more walks in Arizona.
