Rookie Streaks

Looking at the longest current hit streaks this morning, the list is dominated by rookies and young players. Robbie Grossman of the Astros leads with a 12-game streak, and right on his heels is Khris Davis, at 11. Davis is especially hot, with five homers, nine runs scored, ten RBI and a .432 BA during the streak. Junior Lake of the Cubs, another rookie, is working on an eight game streak, putting three rookies in the top eight. The 20-year-old Bryce Harper also comes in with an eight-game streak, and while not a rookie, is young enough to still be in the minors (he’s also the youngest person in the top eight).

We could be seeing the future with Grossman and Davis. Robbie did a great job of getting on base in the minors. While he probably won’t hit for much power, the ability to draw walks should give the Astros a solid table setter. Davis looks like the complete package, although at age 25, he comes to the majors in his prime. There’s not a lot of room left for improvement.

Great Lake?

Junior Lake has turned out to be a good replacement for Alfonso Soriano in the Cubs lineup. Friday night, he went 1 for 4 with a walk, driving in the only run the Cubs needed and scoring an extra insurance run as Chicago beats the Cardinals 3-0. Lake is 30 for 92 so far, with seven extra base hits and a .326/.354/.489 slash line. His history in the minors indicates he doesn’t get on base that well. In the last two years, however, as he moved up in the system, that statistic improved. He could be the rare player where the idea of taking a walk clicks in late (he’s 23). So far, so good in that regard.
