Games of the Day

The Mets try to make it two game in a row against the Phillies in their weekend series. New York is now seven games back of Philadelphia with six more games head-to-head. Will there be a celebration on the 60th anniversary of the 1964 crash? The Phillies were 89-58, one game better than the current team when things started falling apart.

Luis Severino takes on Kolby Allard. In his only start against the Phillies, Severino pitched seven shutout innings, walking none and striking out nine. Allard allowed five home runs in eighteen innings this season.

The Dodgers and Braved continue their series in Atlanta with a battle of veterans. Jack Flaherty faces Chris Sale. Flaherty is posting his best season since 2019, Sale since 2018. Both are doing well in the Cy Young tracker, with Sale in position to be the favorite for the NL side of the award.

Games of the Day

The Diamondbacks send Merrill Kelly against Tanner Houck and the Red Sox. Kelly missed three months due to a strained muscle in his shoulder. He pitched one good and one bad outing since his return, overall giving up eight runs in ten innings. Houck’s 3.01 ERA is now second in the AL, and he leads the league with the lowest HR per 9 IP, 0.53.

The Phillies and Royals play the rubber match of their weekend series with Kolby Allard taking on Seth Lugo. Allard only walked two batters in his 13 innings this season. He allowed three home runs, accounting for all five of the runs he allowed. Lugo, a former NL East pitcher, faced members of the Phillies a decent amount. Bryce Harper hits him well, J.T. Realmuto and Trea Turner not so much.

Games of the Day

The Rangers and the Blue Jays look like the best early afternoon contest as Kolby Allard takes in Hyun Jin Ryu. Allard owns a 3.69 ERA in eight starts and ten relief appearances. As a starter, he showed better control, but gives up long balls at a much higher rate. He allowed nine home runs in 43 1/3 innings as a starter, two HR in twenty innings as a reliever. Since the start of June Ryu had some rough starts, but is coming off a good game against the Orioles.

The Red Sox try to go 8-0 against the Yankees in 2021 as Nathan Eovaldi faces Gerrit Cole. Eovaldi tries to reach ten wins in a season for the second time in his career. He stands 2-0 with a 1.32 ERA against the Yankees this season. Cole struck out 147 batters and walked just 22 in 114 innings this season. He also goes for his tenth win. He allowed six runs, five earned, in his only start against Boston this year. That’s 1/6 of the runs he allowed this season.

The Giants send Anthony DeSclafani against the Cardinals and Kwang Hyun Kim. DeSclafani performed his best on the road this season, with a 2.14 ERA in eleven starts. He allowed just 44 hits in 67 1/3 innings outside San Francisco. Kim pitched extremely well lately, allowing just one run in his last three starts covering eighteen innings. He only struck out 14, but limited the opposition to eleven hits.

Games of the Day

The Braves send Ian Anderson against the Marlins and Pablo Lopez as Atlanta begins trying to win without Ronald Acuna Jr. Anderson makes the twenty fourth start of his young career, and so far he does a good job of limiting long balls, just nine home runs allowed in 93 2/3 innings. Lopez improved his ERA for the second year in a row, down from 5.09 in 2019 to 3.61 in 2020 to 2.94 this year. After giving up 23 home runs in his first two seasons, 170 innings, he allowed 13 home runs in his last 152 1/3 innings.

Robbie Ray takes on Rich Hill as the Blue Jays finish their series with the Rays. Tampa Bay goes for their seventh win in a row. Ray ranks second in the AL in home runs allowed with 20. His ERA is good, however, as those home runs accounted for 26 of the 36 RBI against him. Hill is undefeated in day games this season, 4-0 with a 2.73 ERA in six starts.

The Athletics and Rangers play in Texas as Chris Bassitt faces Kolby Allard. Bassitt tries to reach ten wins for the second time in his career. Since 2019 he is 24-9 in 57 appearances with a 3.37 ERA. Allard walked just 13 batters in 57 1/3 innings, helping him to a 3.45 ERA.

Finally, the Angels and Mariners square off in the northwest as Jose Suarez battles Hector Santiago. Suarez makes his first road start of the season, and he is 3-1 with a 1.80 ERA in his road relief appearances. Santiago tries to stop Shohei Ohtani from gaining on Roger Maris‘s record. Ohtani is 0 for 2 with a K against Santiago.

Games of the Day

The Dodgers visit the Marlins with Walker Buehler taking on Trevor Rogers. Buehler stands 8-1 with a 2.35 ERA having walked just 22 batters in 103 1/3 innings. Rogers 2.14 ERA comes from preventing home runs, having allowed just five long balls in 92 1/3 innings.

The Tigers and Rangers send Wily Peralta and Kolby Allard to the mound in Texas. Peralta returned to the majors after missing the 2020 season, and so far so good as he owns a 3.21 ERA. He allowed just 10 hits in 14 innings. Allard splits time between starting and relieving, but in both situations he limits walks, just 11 BB in 52 innings.

Games of the Day

The Athletics face the Rangers in what used to be a rare summer afternoon game in Texas. With the Rangers now playing in a domed stadium, getaway day games are possible. Chris Bassitt takes on Kolby Allard. Bassitt is on a very nice three-season run, 22-9 with a 3.36 ERA since the start of the 2019 season. He doesn’t overwhelm batters with strikeouts, but keeps his walks and home run low and still manages to allow few hits. Allard is off to a great start with just ten walks in forty innings after allowing twenty walks in 33 2/3 innings in 2020.

The Red Sox and Rays battle for first place in the AL East as Nick Pivetta takes on Michael Wacha. The two pitchers own high ERAs, so the offense will be more on view in this game. The Red Sox and Rays rank 2-4 respectively in runs per game in the AL. The Red Sox rank high in batting average, OBP, and slugging average. The Rays are about league average in OBP, but below average in BA and Slug. The Rays hit into very few double plays, however, so their runners tend to be on base when good things happen. Most of their power comes with men on base, so they move those runners along.

Games of the Day

Joe Musgrove leads the Padres against the Mets, Marcus Stroman taking the for the home team. Musgrove allowed just three runs in his last four starts, covering 21 2/3 innings. He walked two and struck out 30 in that stretch. Stroman walked just 17 batters in 71 1/3 innings. His strikeout rate is low by 2021 standards, but he allowed just 60 hits for a 1.08 WHIP.

Kolby Allard of the Rangers tries to defeat the Dodgers an Trevor Bauer. Allard found his control this season. After walking 4.4 batters per nine innings in his first three seasons, he is walking 2.5 per nine in 2021, helping to drop his ERA to 3.41. Bauer has not pitched much in Los Angeles this year, but he owns a 4-0 record with a 1.69 ERA at home. He walked just three batters in 26 2/3 innings at home, compared to 24 batters in 55 2/3 innings on the road.

Games of the Day

The AL Central is the only American League division with more than one team over .500. The fourth place Indians and the second place White Sox both fit that bill as they play in Chicago. Zach Plesac takes on Matt Foster in a battle of twenty-five year olds. Both pitchers were born in January, 1995. Plesac so far improved on a good rookie year, walking one and striking out 17 in 15 innings pitched. He is a perfect replacement for the departures of Corey Kluber and Trevor Bauer. Foster, a true rookie, make his first start after three relief appearances. He struck out six in 3 2/3, and has not allowed a run. He posted excellent strikeout and walk numbers in the minors as well.

Gerrit Cole tries to make it four wins in a row as the Yankees visit the Rays and Tyler Glasnow in game one of a double header. Cole could get a seven inning complete game. Despite his great pitching in 2019, he never finished what he started. He already has one under his belt in 2020. Glasnow showed wild power so far this season, walking five in 8 2/3 innings, but striking out 14. The tradeoff might be worth it, as he only allowed four hits. Two of those were home runs, however. Given the Yankees power, this could be a low scoring, close game, won by whichever team goes deep the most.

Down in Texas, the Angels send Patrick Sandoval against the Rangers and Kolby Allard. Sandoval looks for his first major league win in his twelfth appearance and eleventh start. He’s been hampered by home runs, with seven allowed in 43 1/3 innings. Allard tends to have the ball put in play against him, leading to a high number of hits. He controlled that in his first start, giving up just two hits in four innings.
