Best Batter Today

The Mets took Monday off, and three of their hitters remain in the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Brandon Nimmo, Pete Alonso, and Jeff McNeill rank 1-3-5 respectively. They get back into action Tuesday evening as New York hosts Washington.

Alex Bregman of the Astros did play and ranks second after going two for four with a double in an 8-3 Rays win. Mike Trout of the Angels ranks fourth after a one for six in a ten inning, 11-10 Oakland win. The A’s allow ten runs or more again, but this time the offense bails out the pitching and defense.

That game produced the three highest game scores of the day. Brandon Drury of the Angels comes out on top with an 84. He goes three for four with two home runs and a walk. Drury needed that game as he is now hitting just .211/.247/.380. Jesus Aguilar and Brent Rooker posted game scores of 79 and 77 respectively. Aguilar goes three for four with two home runs, while Rooker goes two for four with two home runs and two walks. Rooker is slugging .729 on the season, Aguilar .500.

Bad Week for Jesus

After Baseball Jesus Stephen Strasburg went back on the illjured list having made just one start, the Miami Marlins lose their pair of saviors:

Jesús Aguilar and Jesús Sánchez were placed on the injured list Friday by the Miami Marlins, who did not specify why.

Manager Don Mattingly said he couldn’t talk about the medical issues of Aguilar and Sánchez,, who rank third and fourth on the Marlins in homers. Aguilar has played in a team-high 58 games.

Both make a lot of outs, but both also provide some power.

Jesus Rises

It took until after Easter for Jesus Aguilar to find his power stroke. In a Chris Davis like performance, Aguilar came into today’s Brewers game against the Rockies hitting .123/.217/.151 with no home runs after belting 35 long balls in 2018. He hit two home runs so far tonight as the Brewers lead 5-0 in the sixth inning, Aguilar driving in four of the runs.

Beat the Streak Picks

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

For 2018, I am just going to publish the Log5 hit averages and the NN probabilities with parks factored in. I am keeping track of the results here. I added a graph that gives a visual representation of the probability and success each day.

I have been asked to expand the list to the top 25 players for an econometric project.

First, the Log5 Method picks:

0.304 — Jean Segura batting against Tyler Skaggs.
0.304 — Manny Machado batting against Nick Pivetta.
0.299 — Adam Jones batting against Nick Pivetta.
0.289 — Corey Dickerson batting against Wade Miley.
0.288 — Odubel Herrera batting against Kevin Gausman.

Cardinals Bow to Jesus

The Brewers beat the Cardinals 2-1 in an extremely well pitched game on both sides. Junior Guerra allowed three hits in his five innings of work, then the Brewers bullpen tossed four perfect innings. Jack Flaherty took a no-hitter into the seventh, when Jesus Aguilar homered to tie the game at one. That was the only hit Flaherty allowed in seven innings. In the ninth, Aguilar collected just the third hit of the game for the Brewers, but it again was a home run, and Milwaukee walks off with a 2-1 win.

Early in the season Aguilar was hitting well, but not hitting home runs. He hit two in his first 33 games, but only 17 of those were starts. His slash line at that point was .342/.420/.507. Since then, he played 32 games, starting 31 of them, owns a .282/.331/.669 slash line, and hit 14 home runs. Twenty of his 35 hits went for extra bases in that time. He’s really mashing the ball.
