Games of the Day

The Reds control own the tie-breaker advantage in the race for the third NL Wild Card slot, but have not been able to stay in at least a tie for the slot. They will try again on Thursday as the Pirates send Braxton Ashcraft against Nick Lodolo. Ashcraft, a seasonal age 25 rookie, showed some promise in his first 25 appearances with a 2.62 ERA. He allowed just three home runs in 65 1/3 innings. Lodolo allowed 22 home runs in 149 1/3 innings, but limited the damage by only walking 28 batters.

The Diamondback are tied with the Reds, one game behind the Mets. In a two way tie, the Diamondbacks and Mets split six games, but Arizona has the better intra-division record. The Reds hold the head-to-head tie breaker against the Diamondbacks. The Dodgers send Yoshinobu Yamamoto against Jalen Beeks. Yamamoto improved on his rookie season with about a 0.4 run reduction in his ERA as he became more more difficult to hit. The BABIP against him dropped from .306 to .244. Beeks pitches as the opener for the second time this season. He did not allow a hit or a walk in his first start.

The Red Sox go for a sweep of the Blue Jays in Toronto with Brayan Bello facing Louis Varland. Brayan finishes up his best regular season, extending his innings on the mound from 2024 with fewer hits and home runs allowed. Varland makes his first stat of the season after 69 2/3 solid relief innings. He allowed just six home runs and 21 walks.

Finally, the Mets and Cubs play the rubber game of their series, and New York needs to stay ahead of both the Red s and the Diamondbacks to make the playoffs. Rookie Nolan McLean takes on Shota Imanaga. McLean showed the ability to go deep in starts for a rookie, averaging six innings. He allowed just one home run in his 42 2/3 innings. Imanaga held batters to a .213 BABIP this season, but did allow 29 homers in 139 innings.

Lean McLean

Nolan McLean pitched an impressive third major league start, pitching eight shutout inning against the Phillies as the Mets sweep the three-game series with a 6-0 win. McLean allowed four hits, no walks, and struck out six, throwing just 95 pitches. We may have another Greg Maddux on our hands. He lowered his ERA to 0.89 in 20 1/3 innings, with just four walks and one home run allowed. According the the SNY broadcast, he is the first Mets pitcher to win his first three starts.

It’s a division race in the NL East as New York cuts Philadelphia’s lead to four games, and the two teams have four game left against each other.

Games of the Day

The late Yogi Berra might sponsor the Yu-Woo game, as the Padres send Yu Darvish against the Mariners and Bryan Woo.

Darvish comes into the game with a 5.36 ERA, but in his last five starts it’s a more Davishish 3.00. He struck out 28 and walked just five in 27 innings. Woo pitched at least six inning in every start this season, and currently ranks third in the AL in innings pitched.

The Mets go for a sweep of the Phillies in Queens as Taijuan Walker faces rookie Nolan McLean. Walker balanced his relatively low K rate with a .270 BABIP allowed. McLean in two starts allowed two runs in 12 1/3 innings with 15 K and four walks. He faced 46 batters, and only six recorded hits.

The Diamondbacks and Brewers played high scoring, comeback games so far, and tonight features Ryne Nelson against Quinn Priester. Nelson dopped his opposition slugging percentage to .382 this season compared to .447 for his career, helping himself to a 3.63. Priester, vice-president of the fashion club, induced 13 GDPs in 70 opportunities, helping to moderate his 45 walks.

Games of the Day

Bryan Woo of the Mariners leads the team against the Mets and Nolan McLean, making his MLB debut. Woo combines a good whiff rate of 8.59 for his career with an opposition BABIP of .249 to hold batters to a .215 BA. Combine that with 1.77 BB per nine, and his high home run rate does little damage. McLean’s minor league numbers make him look like a right-handed Andy Pettitte. His walk rate is high, but he removes a ton of runners with double plays and pickoffs.

The Brewers go for fourteen wins in a row as they send Quinn Priester against Zack Littell of the Reds. Priester stands 11-2 with a 3.49 ERA for the season. He is coming off a poor start where he allowed the Mets six runs and ten hits in 4 1/3 innings, but got the no decision thanks to the Milwaukee offense. Littell walks very few batters, leading to a .287 OBP. He supplements that low number by inducing a good number of double plays.

The winner of the Padres at the Dodgers is guaranteed a share of first place comes Monday morning. Dylan Cease takes on Blake Snell. Cease’s high ERA seems like a bit of bad luck, as his three true outcomes are all in line with his career averages. His FIPs reflect this, as they are about a run lower than his ERA. Snell makes his fifth start of the season, and so far owns a 2.37 ERA with 22 K in 19 innings.
