Games of the Day

First place teams battle in Houston as the Phillies send Ranger Suarez against Framber Valdez. Suarez comes into the game with a 2.20 ERA, good for a 6-1 record. He limited power this season, with only ten of his 47 hits going for extra bases. Not content with being just Framb, Valdez stands as the winningest pitcher of the decade of the 20’s, with 63 wins to Zack Wheeler‘s 62.

Garrett Crochet leads the Red Sox against the Angels and Tyler Anderson. Crochet holds batters to a .205/.259/.309 slash line, bringing everyone down to the level of a backup catcher. Homers hurt Anderson’s ERA this season. He allowed 24 all of last season, but already gave up 15 in 2025.

Games of the Day

The Twins continue their series with the Rays as Joe Ryan faces Taj Bradley. The two teams are locked in the AL Wild Card battle. Minnesota is tied with Cleveland for the top spot, with the Rays now two games back in fifth place after winning six in a row. Ryan comes into the game with a 2.68 ERA in 57 innings. His career K per BB stands at 5.06, but this season he upped his game to bring that ratio to 8.38. Bradley improved his home run rate this season, but his K and BB rates moved in the wrong direction. At seasonal age 24, he is not yet in his prime, but he is also not showing much improvement as he approaches his peak years.

The Yankees and Angels meet in game two of their series as Carlos Rodon takes on Tyler Anderson. It took a few starts for Rodon to find his groove. In his last seven starts he owns a 1.43 ERA in 42 2/3 innings, allowing just three home runs. Despite some walks, Anderson holds batters to a .298 OBP this season, but allowed ten home runs in 55 innings. That weakness plays to a Yankees strength.

Games of the Day

The Twins make a bid for a thirteen game hit streak as they continue their series in Milwaukee. Pablo Lopez faces Tobias Myers. Since joining the Twins, Lopez owns a 29-20 record in 71 starts with a 3.76 ERA. That ERA is down to 2.77 this year. He improved his strikeout rate to 1.6 per nine in 2025, down from his 2.1 for his Twins career. Myers pitched just 16 1/3 innings this season, and he’s been a bit wild, walking ten.

Tyler Anderson of the Angels takes on the Dodgers in the last game of the day. Instead of concentrating on Anderson’s excellent 2.58 ERA, most of the attention will go to the return to Clayton Kershaw to the Dodgers rotation. Kershaw wants to go out because he can’t perform well, not because an injury stopped him:

“Look, if I get out there and get shelled and I’m not any good anymore and just the time is the time, then that’s one thing,” he added. “If another hitter gets the best of me, that’s one thing. But I’m not going to let myself do it to myself.”

SI.com

Anderson’s 2.58 is in line with the best season of his career, his lone stint with the Dodgers in 2022. Note that his walk and home run rates are up from that season, but his opposition BABIP stands at a very low .197.

Games of the Day

Cole Ragans leads the Royals against the Tigers and Jackson Jobe. Ragans makes a bid for king of the three-true outcomes as he leads the AL in K per 9 IP, ranks fourth in walks per 9 IP and fifth in HR pr 9 IP. Jobe now has 19 MLB innings under his belt. He limits hits, with just ten allowed, but walked 9 so far. Despite the walks, his ERA stands at 2.37.

The Dodgers matchup with the Rangers as Yoshinobu Yamamoto faces Jacob deGrom. Yamamoto ranks second in the NL with a 1.23 ERA thanks in part to a high K rate of 11.45 per 9 IP. deGrom has yet to overwhelm batters this season. His 7.98 K per 9 IP is well below his career rate of 10.94, and his walk rate of 3.68 per 9 IP is well above his career mark of 2.05.

Finally, Logan Webb takes on Tyler Anderson in Anaheim as the Giants visit the Angels. Webb allowed just one home run in 24 innings, and 12 HR in 228 2/3 innings since the start of 2024. That tops the majors. Anderson walked ten batters in 15 2/3 innings, but only allowed eight hits, and only one with a man on base for a 2.87 ERA.

Games of the Day

With bad weather in Baltimore on Friday, Bowden Francis of the Blue Jays and Tomoyuki Sugano Orioles try to get the game in today. I discussed the matchup yesterday.

The Angels are smacking the ball as they send Tyler Anderson against the Astros and Ryan Gusto. With three batters in the top five of the AL in home runs, the Angels rank second in the AL in home runs with 25, one behind the Yankees. Opponents own a .167 BABIP against Anderson this season, but part of that is due to three of the seven hits against him going for home runs. Gusto makes the first start of his MLB career after four relief appearances. He allowed five hits in eight innings, striking out nine. In 148 1/3 AAA inning he owned a 3.70 ERA.

Given the ERAs of some of the starters today, we might see a Saturday with a lot of offense.

Games of the Day

The Braves try to close the gap with the Phillies a little more before September as Max Fried takes on Zack Wheeler. Despite injuries that hurt his K and BB rates, Fried still does an excellent job of preventing home runs. Wheeler trails Chris Sale of the Braves in Tom Tango Cy Young points, so September may be telling for who comes out on top.

Gavin Stone battles Merrill Kelly as the Dodgers try to hold off the Diamondbacks. With the Dodgers playing better lately, their lead in the NL West is back to five games. Stone’s strength is limiting walks, and despite a relatively low K per 9 IP, he does limit hits as well. Kelly stands undefeated at 4-0. Having him back strong for the playoffs should give Arizona an edge that won’t be apparent in the season stats.

Finally, the Mariners visit the Angels with Bryan Woo facing Tyler Anderson. Woo pitched two few innings for his 2.05 ERA to qualify for the AL title, but only Renaldo Lopez of the Braves is better at the 85 inning level. Anderson’s 3.41 ERA hides the decline in his three true outcomes. His FIPs stand at 4.46 and 4.82.

Games of the Day

The good pitching matchup take place on the West Coast today. Jose Berrios squares off against Tyler Anderson as the Blue Jays visit the Angels. Since the start of 2021, Berrios allowed 102 home runs, third most in the majors. He does look a bit better on home runs per 9 IP. Anderson’s 2.99 ERA puts him fourth in the AL in that category. He allowed 111 hits in 141 2/3 innings despite a low strikeout rate.

Grant Holmes takes on Robbie Ray as Atlanta battles the Giants. Holmes makes his fourth start of the season to go with ten relief appearances. He owns a 5.52 ERA in his three starts, versus 2.70 in relief appearances. Ray makes his fifth start after his return from surgery. His K rate is back as he struck out 28 batters in his first 20 1/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Tigers are on a bit of a roll as they host the Dodgers. Detroit swept the Reds and took three of four from the Guardians. Los Angeles just got swept by the Phillies. James Paxton takes the mound against Tarik Skubal. Paxton owns a good record, 7-2 despite a 4.24 ERA. It helps to be on a team that scores nearly five runs a game. Skubal’s 10-3 record is right in line with his 2.37 ERA. Sometimes high wins means you’re a great pitcher, and sometimes high wins means you played for a great team. ERA is one of the contexts.

The Mariners send Bryan Woo against the Angels and Tyler Anderson. Woo did a good job of stopping hits both last and this year, but this season he’s walking batters at a rate 1/5 of 2023. Anderson is a bright spot for the Angels with his 2.81 ERA. His BABIP is extremely low at .229.

Enjoy!

May 29, 2024

Games of the Day

The Red Sox throw Kutter Crawford against the Orioles and Corbin Burnes. Crawford is one of many pitchers who benefitted from the drop in home runs, as his rate per nine inning is down 50% from last season. Burnes does a fantastic job of limiting power with a .328 opposition slugging percentage this season and a .334 mark for his career.

Shota Imanaga of the Cubs faces Bryse Wilson of the Brewers. Imanaga brings his MLB leading 0.84 ERA into the game. Not only are his three-true outcomes outstanding, opponents are two for twenty two with runners in scoring position. Wilson, with a 2.86 ERA, is doing an excellent job of filling the hole opened by the trade of Burnes.

Finally, the Yankees face the Angels with Luis Gil battling Tyler Anderson. Gil allowed just 27 hits in 55 1/3 innings. That seems to have more than compensated for the twenty nine walks. Anderson also limited hits, giving up just 45 in 64 1/3 innings despite a low K rate of 6.16 per 9 IP. Opposition BABIP against him is just an unreal .209.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

Justin Steele pitches in the Steel City as the Cubs face the Pirates, Paul Skenes making his major league debut. Steele allowed six hits and two walks in his first two starts covering 9 1/3 innings, leading to just one run. You can’t swing a dead cat without running into a story about Skenes potential greatness. At seasonal age 22, Skenes gets called up after 34 minor league innings in which he posted a 2.12 ERA. 27 1/3 of those innings coming at AAA. If we focus on AAA, he struck out 45 batters, walked eight, and allowed just one home run. Batters managed 17 hits against him.

A big caveat in my opinion is that Skenes was not allowed to go deep in games. He made seven starts at triple A, averaging not quite four inning per start. So he never got the chance to tire in a game. The Pirates addressed this in the ESPN article:

“We’d rather have the majority of the volume available to him be in the major leagues and not the minor leagues,” Cherington said. “Managing the volume progression early so it’s building more slowly than an established major league starter’s would, but in a way where we’re not using an unnecessary number of innings in the minor leagues.”

ESPN.com

This is the most anticipated debut since Stephen Strasburg made his first start against the Pirates 14 years ago.

Undefeated pitchers battle in Detroit as Cristian Javier of the Astros takes on Tarik Skubal of the Tigers. Javier stands 2-0 in four starts with a 1.54 ERA. His Ks are low and his walks high, but he avoided base hits with just 15 allowed in 23 1/3 innings. Skubal is also tough to hit, but blows away batters with few walks, helping him to a 1.90 ERA. Different methods, similar results.

The Royals battle in the heat of an excellent AL Central race as they send Cole Ragans against the Angels and Tyler Anderson. Ragans’ ERA improved just a little despite better rates in all three-true outcomes. That suggests a bit of bad luck, so look for his ERA to come down a bit if he can keep that up. Anderson is way at the opposite end of the spectrum, with an ERA two runs below his FIP.

April 30, 2024

Games of the Day

The Cubs continue their series against the Mets with Javier Assad taking on Sean Manaea. Assad is not only tough to hit, with a .194 BA allowed, but he limits power, too, with a .280 slugging percentage allowed. Manaea upped his K rate this season while maintaining an excellent walk rate.

MacKenzie Gore and Jon Gray battle in Texas as the Nationals visit the Rangers. Gore improved all three of his true outcome rates this season, knocking his ERA down over a run from his career average. Gray’s strikeouts are through the roof this season, but his BABIP allowed ballooned to .354. Even though he allowed a good number of base runners, the Ks keep them from advancing very much.

Finally, Spencer Turnbull and the Phillies face Tyler Anderson and the Angels, both starters entering the game with sub 2.00 ERAs.

Enjoy!

June 12, 2023

Games of the Day

The Angels get a chance to close their 6 1/2 game gap with the Rangers as Tyler Anderson takes on Dane Dunning. Anderson is 3-1 despite a 5.62 ERA. The lo strikeout pitcher gives up lots of hits, but tends not to go deep enough in games to get decisions. The Angels tend to score lots of runs in his starts, also. Dunning is a swing man, not an opener, successful in both the bullpen and in a starting role this season. He is a low strikeout pitcher who manages to limit hits with a high percentage of ground balls.

The surging Marlins visit Seattle as Jesus Luzardo faces Bryce Miller. Luzardo shows power and control, with 86 K and 20 BB in 73 2/3 innings. The rookie Miller walked just five batters in his first 38 1/3 innings. He allowed a .323 BA with runners in scoring position, however.

Games of the Day

It’s an all Tyler day in Baltimore as Tyler Anderson of the Angels faces Tyler Wells of the Orioles. (Record setting president John Tyler could not be reached for comment.) Anderson stands 1-0, undefeated in seven starts despite a 5.26 ERA. The Angels scored at least five runs in six of those games. Wells owns a 2.68 ERA despite allowing eight home runs in 47 innings. He keeps men off base, however, those eight homers accounting for nearly a third of the hits against him, and he walked just nine batters.

The Rays and Mets play make a quick turnaround with a 1 PM EDT start with Taj Bradley taking on Tylor Megill. The rookie Bradley stands 3-0 in after three MLB starts. He walked two and struck out 23 in 15 1/3 innings. Megill 4.02 ERA strikes me as much better than he’s pitched. He allowed five home runs and 22 walks in 40 1/3 innings. Batters are just 6 for 38 against him with runners in scoring position.

Money Flows Coast to Coast

Tyler Anderson leaves the Dodgers for a gig in Anaheim as the Angels agree to a three-year deal with the pitcher. Meanwhile, the Yankees bring back first baseman Anthony Rizzo on a potential three-year deal. Both contacts are reported to be around $40 million guaranteed.

Rizzo plays 2023 as a 33-year-old and is a solid two WAR player his contract contains an option year that could bring his value up to $51 million. Anderson, the same age, comes off a 4.0 fWAR season with the Dodgers. He was a solid pitcher for the Rockies for a number of seasons before becoming peripatetic the last three seasons. Both sign fair contracts, and will have a chance to earn more in three years if they keep producing.

Playoffs Today

Three teams might advance to the League Championship Series on Saturday. The first elimination game takes place in Philadelphia where the Braves send Charlie Morton against the Phillies and Noah Syndergaard. A Phillies win puts them in the NLCS. With both pitchers owning regular season ERAs over 4.00, this might be the slugfest of the day. Morton performed well overall in the post-season, 7-4 with a 3.35 ERA in seventeen appearances. In four starts for the Braves he pitched just 16 2/3 innings, but blew batters away with 22 strikeouts. Syndergaard owns a 2.33 post-season ERA and has not allowed a home run in those 27 innings.

Houston goes for a sweep of the Mariners as Seattle gets their first home game of the 2022 post-season. Lance McCullers, Jr. gets the nod for the Astros against George Kirby. McCullers pitched a short but effective season, going 4-2 in eight starts with a 2.27 ERA. He allowed just 37 hits in 47 2/3 innings, but did walk 22 batters. Note that in game two, the Mariners drew seven walks but only delivered five hits, pushing just two runs across the plate. Kirby posted a very nice rookie season. He also walked 22 batters, but in 130 innings. He does tend to give up hits despite a high K rate.

The Yankees visit the Guardians, the only series guaranteed a game on Sunday. Luis Severino faces Triston McKenzie. Severino matches up well with the Guardians as his strength comes from preventing hits and his slight weakness is allowing home runs. McKenzie is similar, although having a weakness of allowing home runs plays into the Yankees strength.

Finally, the Padres get the chance to knock the Dodgers out of the playoffs in San Diego as Tyler Anderson takes the mound against Jose Musgrove. Anderson is the latest player to have his career resurrected by the Dodgers, going 15-5 with a 2.57 ERA in 178 2/3 innings. The impressive part is that he allowed just 145 hits with just 135 K. Musgrove comes off a dominant performance in his first start in the post-season, holding the Mets to one hit in seven innings.

Enjoy!

September 12, 2022

Games of the Day

The Rays head to the Great White North (now with King Charles III on the money) to play the Blue Jays as they jockey for position in the AL Wild Card race. Cooper Criswell takes on Jose Berrios. Criswell makes his 2022 and Rays debut, having pitched one game for the Angels in 2021. He last 1 1/2 innings, allowing six hits and three runs, with no three true outcome events! He was a high strikeout, low walk pitcher in the minors, but still gave up a ton of hits. Berrios owns a 5.23 ERA. He didn’t get the memo on the climate controlled balls and allowed 28 home runs in 146 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers have clinched a playoff slot, and can lower their magic number for the division to one with a win over the Diamondbacks. Tyler Anderson takes on Ryne Nelson. Anderson allowed 13 home runs in 154 2/3 innings, after giving up 27 dingers last season in 167 innings. Nelson make his second MLB start after pitching seven shutout innings in his debut.

Enjoy!

August 31, 2022

Games of the Day

The afternoon gives us the Astros at the Rangers with Cristian Javier facing Martin Perez. Javier lowered his ERA over half a run from last year by lowering both his walks and home run rates. In a very good year for pitchers in the AL, Perez’s 2.69 ERA does not make the top five. He needs six innings for 162, the qualifying level for the title. Note that with both Justin Verlander and Shane McClanahan hurt, Perez could wind up in the top five by others not qualifying.

The early evening features the Dodgers at the Mets with Tyler Anderson taking on Jacob deGrom. Even with the Rockies, Anderson induced a fairly decent BABIP, and since leaving it became great. His .258 BABIP this season allows him to limit hits while batters put a ton of balls in play. The Mets ace prevents hits the old fashioned way, as he struck out 46 batters in 29 1/3 innings.

The late show focus is on Anaheim where Gerrit Cole of the Yankees takes the hill against Patrick Sandoval of the Angels. Cole reached 200 K for the fifth time in his career. Sandoval features a better ERA than Cole, but a losing record of 4-9. He only pitched 115 innings in 21 starts, and it’s tough to win when you don’t stay in the game.

Enjoy!

August 14, 2022

Games of the Day

The Guardians and Blue Jays play the rubber game of their series in Toronto with Shane Bieber taking on Kevin Gausman. Bieber is now 48-24 for his career in 103 games, 101 starts. He struck out an impressive 767 batters in 634 2/3 innings while walking just 146. Guasman continues his nice three-season run in which he posted a 2.97 ERA. In that time he allowed 34 home runs in 369 1/3 innings.

Tyler Anderson goes for his fourteenth win as the Dodgers face the Royals and Brady Singer. Los Angeles tries for their thirteenth win in a row. Anderson prevents hits without a ton of strikeouts, with 98 K and 97 safeties in 122 1/3 innings. Singer owns a 2.45 ERA since the start of July, striking out 51 batters in 44 innings.

The Yankees and Red Sox play the rubber game of their series on Sunday Night Baseball. Jameson Taillon battles Michael Wacha. Taillon’s strength is his control, with a walk issued every five innings. Wacha owns a 1.39 ERA in six starts at Fenway this season where he allowed just 22 hits in 32 1/3 innings.

Enjoy!

August 7, 2022

Games of the Day

The Yankees send Frankie Montas against the Cardinals and Adam Wainwright as the Cardinals go for a sweep in St. Louis. Montas makes his Yankees debut after posting a 3.18 ERA for the Athletics. That ERA yielded a 4-9 record with Oakland. He should do better with the Yankees. Wainwright looks for career win 193 as he approaches 200. He has an outside chance of making the milestone this season.

The try to gain back a game against the Mets as Spencer Strider faces Jacob deGrom. Strider is putting together a good rookie of the year case with a 6-3 record and 2.79 ERA. He blows away batters with 133 K in 87 innings. deGrom makes his second start of the season. He struck out six in five inning without walking a batter in his first.

Finally, the Sunday night game features the Padres at the Dodgers with Yu Darvish facing Tyler Anderson Darvish saw his K rate drop a bit this season, but made up for it with fewer walks. Anderson’s 12-1 record this season gives him a career winning percentage over .500, 41-39.

Enjoy!

July 28, 2022

Games of the Day

The Mariners could not beat the Astros when they faced them in Seattle last week, so now they’ll try to win in Houston. Logan Gilbert takes on Jose Urquidy. Gilbert’s ERA improved greatly this season, but his three-true outcomes have not. His xFIP is down from 4.19 to 3.69 indicating he went from unlucky in 2021 to lucky in 2022. His intrinsic talent is some where in the middle. Urquidy pitched consistently well in his four season career, now 20-9 with a 3.93 ERA in 52 appearances, 50 of them starts. He is a relatively low K, low BB pitcher.

The Dodgers send Tyler Anderson against the the Rockies and Jose Urena at Coors Field. The former Rockies starter is 10-1 with a 2.79 ERA. This would be the first year since his rookie season of 2016 that he posted an ERA below 4.00. Urena split time between the rotation and the bullpen. He is not an opener, averaging six innings in his four starts with a 3.00 ERA.

Enjoy!

July 22, 2022

Games of the Day

The Red Sox host the Blue Jays with Boston two games behind Toronto for the third wild card slot. Kevin Guasman takes on Nathan Eovaldi. Gausman allowed 0.9 homers per nine innings last season, a good rate, but this season it’s down to 0.3 per nine innings, a great rate. It has not helped his ERA, however, as he traded home runs for other hits. Eovaldi makes his second start since returning from the disabled list. He allowed three runs to the Yankees in 4 1/3 innings in his first. He’s walked just twelve batters in 72 2/3 innings this season.

The Padres send Yu Darvish against the Mets and Max Scherzer in Queens. Darvish, for the first time in his career, owns fewer strikeouts than innings pitched in a season. He still limits hits, however, with just 85 allowed in 108 1/3 innings. Scherzer struck out 31 and walked one in nineteen innings since returning from the disabled list.

The Astros visit the Mariners as Seattle tries to tie the franchise record with their fifteenth straight win. Since the streak started on July 2nd, the Astros are 12-5, so Seattle only closed 3 1/2 games in the standing in the AL West. In that time, Mariners batters are hitting .257/.330/.438 with 21 homers. Their opponents are hitting .228/.285/.340 with eleven home runs.

Finally, the Giants continue their series at the Dodgers with Logan Webb facing Tyler Anderson. Webb tries to reach double digits in wins for the second year in a row, having lowered his ERA 0.20 runs compared to 2021. Anderson is already at ten wins, and tries to tie his teammate Tony Gonsolin for the league lead with eleven. Anderson walked seventeen batters and struck out 81 in 97 1/3 innings.

Enjoy!

July 2, 2022

Games of the Day

The Rays and Blue Jays open the day with an excellent pitching match-up in game one of their doubleheader. Shane McClanahan takes on Kevin Guasman. McClanahan lowered his ERA in his sophomore season by raising his K rate and lowering his walk rate. Home runs allowed are his only weakness, but with no one on base they do little damage. Guasman continues his renaissance with another season with an ERA under 3.00. He allowed just two home runs in 86 innings, the second best HR rate in the majors.

The White Sox send Dylan Cease against the Giants and Logan Webb. Cease owns a 0.26 ERA in his last six starts, but ten of the eleven runs he allowed were unearned. Webb remains consistent, following up his 3.03 ERA in 2021 with a 3.04 ERA in 2022.

The leader in HR per 9 IP, Martin Perez of the Rangers takes on Trevor Williams and the Mets. Perez’s eschewing of the long ball lowered his ERA to 2.22. Williams owns a 2.00 ERA at home, where he allowed just one of his six home runs.

Finally, Yu Darvish battles Tyler Anderson as the Padres visit the Dodgers. Darvish comes off an excellent June in which he posted a 2.52 ERA, walking just five batters in 35 2/3 innings. Anderson walked just 13 batters in 78 innings this season, and goes for his ninth win.

Enjoy!

June 22, 2022

Games of the Day

The Dodgers face the Reds with Tyler Anderson taking on Luis Castillo. Anderson defends his 8-0 record, his strength coming from walking just eleven batters in 67 innings. Castillo struggled a bit at home this season where his walk rate is nearly double his rate on the road.

The 1993 game pits Chad Kuhl of the Rockies against Pablo Lopez of the Marlins. Kuhl owns a 3.69 ERA overall, great for a Rockies pitcher. His control evaporates on the road, however. He walked just six batters in 27 1/3 innings in Colorado, twenty one batters in 36 innings away. Lopez brings a 2.85 ERA into the game, holding opponents to a .273 OBP.

Finally, the first place Guardians and the second place Twins battle in Minnesota. They are tied in games back, but the Twins place six more games. Cleveland leads by three in the All Freaking Important Loss Column (AFILC), and the Twins lead by three in the Totally Meaningless Win Column (TMWC). Triston McKenzie takes the hill against Sonny Gray. McKenzie owns a 2.96 ERA with a 4-5 record. The Guardians scored two runs or less in five of his starts. Gray’s 2.09 ERA comes from 42 K in 38 2/3 innings, leading to just 26 hits allowed.

Enjoy!

June 9, 2022

Games of the Day

Miles Mikolas takes on Shane McClanahan as the Cardinals and Rays finish their series in Tampa Bay. Mikolas pitched better on the road this season, 3-1 with a 2.54 ERA. Only one of his six HR allowed came away from St. Louis. McClanahan blows batters away with 89 strikeouts and just twelve walks in 64 1/3 innings.

The Dodgers and White Sox battle in Chicago with Tyler Anderson facing Dylan Cease. Anderson owns a 7-0 record and a 2.59 ERA. This would be his first season with an ERA below four since his rookie year of 2016. Cease struck out 81 batters in 58 1/3 innings, but without McClanahan’s control. Cease walked 30 so far.

Baseball Jesus rises from the illjured list as Stephen Strasburg of the Nationals makes his 2022 debut against the Marlins and Trevor Rogers. Injuries the last two years limited Strasburg to seven appearances in which he went 1-3 with a 5.74 ERA. He allowed four hits in 13 2/3 innings in his rehab assignment. Rogers owns a 5.80 ERA as he is one of the few pitchers who is giving up more home runs this season.

Whose Cy?

A third of the way through the season, no clear candidate emerged for the Cy Young Award in either league. Here are four measures that try to predict voter preferences:

We also can rank pitchers by the two different WARs

It would be unusual today for a reliever to win the award, but Holmes is having a fantastic season. Alcantara appears to be the front runner in the NL, and I would guess Perez might get the nod in the AL if the vote was taken today. Perez has now gone 63 1/3 innings without allowing a home run. While home runs are down this season from recent years, they are still high historically.

June 3, 2022

Games of the Day

The Padres send Joe Musgrove against the Brewers and Corbin Burnes in Milwaukee. Musgrove averages a bit over six innings a start as he brings a 1.86 ERA into the game. Burnes comes in with one more start, but the about the same average distance into the game. He owns a 1.95 ERA. That is going deep into the game in this environment. The main difference between the two is that Burnes allowed eight home runs to Musgrove’s 4.

The Mets and Dodgers play game two of their series with Chris Bassitt taking on Tyler Anderson. Bassitt’s walks are up a big compared to the previous two season, which may be why his ERA is a tick higher. Anderson comes into the game undefeated with a 6-0 record. He walked just six batters in 49 2/3 innings.

The Perfect Anderson

Tyler Anderson of the Dodgers retired the first fifteen Nationals, striking out five. With Los Angeles up 6-0, and Anderson throwing just 50 pitches so far, he can take risks in challenging hitters to try for a complete game no-hitter.

If you haven’t seen him pitch, the left-hander is using the Clayton Kershaw knee hitch.

Update: With one out in the bottom of the sixth, Cesar Hernandez doubles to left-center. The Dodgers are up 9-0 after scoring three in the top of the inning.

May 6, 2022

Games of the Day

The Dodgers visit the Cubs for the Friday afternoon game with Tyler Anderson taking on Drew Smyly. Anderson serves as the swing man, with two starts and two relief appearances this season. He pitched well in both roles, with a win in each and an ERA below 3.00 in each. Smyly sports a 2.79 ERA, thanks to just three walks in 19 1/3 innings. That is balanced by four home runs allowed.

The Mets try to put the hammer down on the Phillies as Max Scherzer takes the mound against Kyle Gibson. The Philadelphia offense has to face the current ace of the staff after their pitchers suffered a breakdown of epic proportions in the ninth inning Thursday night. Scherzer owns the town, with a 9-1 record in Philadelphia in thirteen starts, with a 2.20 ERA. Gibson walked twelve in 27 2/3 innings, but allowed just 18 hits to limit the damage.

The Blue Jays send Kevin Gausman against the Guardians and Shane Bieber. Gausman owned a career 4.30 ERA through 2019. He joined the Giants in 2020 and turned his career around, with a 2.92 ERA since, upping his strikeouts and reducing his home runs allowed. With twenty two hits allowed and six walks in 29 1/3 innings, Bieber allows less than a base runner per inning.

Finally, the surprising Rockies face the Diamondbacks with Chad Kuhl taking on Merrill Kelly. Opponents have a tough to maintain .177 BABIP against Kuhl this season, as the Rockies appear to be vacuuming up the ground balls he induces. After giving up 21 home runs in 158 innings in 2021, Kelly has not allowed a home run in 28 1/3 innings this year.

Games of the Day

It an all Peralta match-up as Freddy Peralta of the Brewers takes on Wily Peralta of the Tigers. Freddy, who is pitching extremely well this season with a 2.69 ERA, is only the third on the Cy Young Points list among the Brewers starters. Wily managed to limit hits despite just 44 K in 70 innings.

Drew Rasmussen of the Rays gets the start against Jose Berrios of the Blue Jays. Rasmussen split time between starting and relieving, but does not appear to be an opener as he averages nearly four innings per start. He posts a 2.33 ERA in the starting role. Berrios proved to be a good acquisition for the Toronto, 4-2 with a 3.63 ERA since joining the team.

Boston sends Nathan Eovaldi against the Mariners and Tyler Anderson. Eovaldi allowed nine of his 14 home runs on the road this season, with only 57 1/3 of his 163 2/3 innings coming away. Nice job by the Red Sox of taking advantage of Eovaldi’s home field advantage. Anderson’s strength lies in his control, with just 32 walks in 148 innings.

Games of the Day

The Mariners try to salvage a their series in Houston where the Astros won the first two games by a combined score of 27-4. Tyler Anderson takes on Framber Valdez. Anderson pitched poorly for Pittsburgh with a 4.35 ERA in eighteen starts, good for a 5-8 record. Since joining the Mariners he is 1-0 with a 2.91 ERA in four starts. He reduced both his walk and home run rates since joining the Mariners, although is walk rate was very good with Pittsburgh. Valdez continues to be good at preventing home runs, with just seven allowed in 91 innings this season.

The Mets send Marcus Stroman against the Dodgers and and David Price. Stroman pitched well despite a sub-.500 record. His one minor weakness is a tendency to allow home runs with men on base. He faced a batter with men on base in about 1/3 of the plate appearances against him, but allowed six of his fourteen homers in that situation. Price pitched both as a reliever and starter this season, with a 3.62 ERA in the starter role and a 3.63 ERA in relief.
