Taveras Takeaway

Yordan Alvarez tries to extend the Astros 5-2 lead over the Rangers by launching a ball over the fence in centerfield. Leody Taveras, the Rangers centerfield, tracked the ball all the way, times his leap perfectly, and bring the ball back to the field in his glove for the out. If the Rangers can with this game by a run, that play will be the reason.

Update: Michael Brantley of the Astros returns the favor as he robs Adolis Garcia of a double on a great running catch in left-center. With a man on second, that catch saves a run as well.

Best Batter Today

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros drops to second place in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. The Rangers pitchers kept him off base as he went 0 for 4 with three strikeouts in the 2-0 Texas win. That puts the idle Juan Soto in first place. Vacationing Aaron Judge sits third, while the Phillies hold fourth and fifth place with Bryce Harper and Trea Turner. All three active top five players will be in action today.

Leody Taveras of the Rangers posted the highest game score of the day, a 63. He went two for two with a walk and a home run from the ninth slot in the order. This will certainly be a game to remember for him. Note that while Taveras career averages aren’t great, he does own a very good .312 BABIP. His high K rate pulls down his numbers, but he’s moderated that in the post season where he’s hitting very well.

Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel

Rangers number nine hitter Leody Taveras takes Justin Verlander of the Astros deep with one out in the top of the fifth inning. He is one of the weaker Rangers hitters, but given a chance to play every day this season, he managed fourteen home runs and 48 extra-base hits. He gives the Rangers a little insurance as they now lead 2-0.

Beat the Streak Picks

For the past few years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit.

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

The Log5 Method yields these top picks:

Nice to see Taveras working his way onto this list. In his fourth year at seasonal age 24, he improved every season, now with a .300/.346/.483 slash line. A big reason for the improvement in 2023 came from pulling his K rate below 20%. That gives his high BABIP more chances to produce hits.

Here are the NN picks:

  • 0.328, 0.771 — Luis Arraez batting against Zack Wheeler.
  • 0.300, 0.734 — Bo Bichette batting against Alex Faedo.
  • 0.319, 0.725 — Corey Seager batting against Trevor Williams.
  • 0.307, 0.714 — Ezequiel Duran batting against Trevor Williams.
  • 0.296, 0.700 — Leody Taveras batting against Trevor Williams.
  • 0.266, 0.699 — Freddie Freeman batting against Griffin Canning.
  • 0.291, 0.698 — Harold Castro batting against Ross Stripling.
  • 0.271, 0.695 — Nick Castellanos batting against Sandy Alcantara.
  • 0.260, 0.691 — Joey Meneses batting against Cody Bradford.
  • 0.276, 0.689 — Masataka Yoshida batting against Luis Medina.
  • 0.278, 0.689 — Yonathan Daza batting against Ross Stripling.

The two systems show nice agreement on the top picks once again. Seager and Arraez have decent hit streaks going. After a three for five on Thursday, Arraez is hitting .388. Seager and Bichette tie for the consensus double down choice.

You can follow the NN results on this spreadsheet. I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!

Just Homers

The Rays held the Rangers to just three hits, but all three were home runs as Leody Taveras goes deep twice and Josh Jung once. That accounted for all three runs, which was nowhere near enough as Tampa Bay takes the game 8-3. Isaac Paredes matched the Rangers hit total with two home runs and a double, driving in six of the home team’s runs.

This was a pretty good matchup, but only 17,447 fans showed up.

Musgrove in the Ninth

Joe Musgrove tries to finish the first no-hitter in Padres history. He takes a 3-0 over Texas lead into the ninth. He is scheduled to face Rangers Eli White, Leody Taveras, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa.

Update: David Dahl pinch hits for White. Dahl lines a 1-1 pitch, but right at the second baseman. The ball was hit very hard, but one out.

Update: Taveras falls behind 0-2. After a foul, he hits a weak ground ball that Musgrove fields and makes the tag for the second out.

Update: Kiner-Falefa grounds a 0-1 pitch to shortstop. The throw is made, and Joe Musgrove has the first no-hitter in Padres history!
