Games of the Day

The Pirates face the Cubs with Andrew Heaney against Jameson Taillon. The Pirates stand 16-15 under new manager Don Kelly. Heaney pitched well since the takeover, with a 3.31 ERA despite few strikeouts. Taillon ability to limit walks gives him a .251 opposition OBP.

Davis Martin of the White Sox takes on Framber Valdez of the Astros in Houston. Martin, in his third year, already set a new single season high in innings with 74 2/3. His strikeouts are down about three per nine innings, but he still managed to drop his ERA 0.7 runs from last season. Valdez leads the majors with two complete games. He owns nine complete games this decade, second to Sandy Alcantara.

The White Sox visit the Royals with Davis Martin taking on Kris Bubic. Martin pitched better than his 4-14 career record. A 4.33 ERA on a decent team would have that closer to .500. Overall he’s done a decent job of preventing home runs and walks, and this year walks are down for him to 2.58 per 9 IP. Bubic pitched better than his 3-2 record this season, coming into the game with a 1.98 ERA. Part of his problem is the general problem with starters in this era, not going deep enough in games to secure a decision. He only pitched 41 innings in seven starts.

The Diamondbacks find themselves six games behind the Dodgers as they open a for-game series in Phoenix. Yoshinobu Yamamoto battles Brandon Pfaadt. Yamamoto leads the NL with a 0.90 ERA. He struck out 49 and walked just 13 in 40 innings. Pfaadt owns a 6.20 ERA against the Dodgers in four starts, but did does a good job limiting walks and home runs.

Hunter Brown and the Astros take on Davis Martin and the White Sox in Chicago. Brown emerged as a star this season, and now ranks 21st on the Bill James Starting Pitcher Rankings, although a Hunter of another color ranks higher. Brown comes in with a 1.22 ERA and 40 K in 37 IP. Martin appears to have traded fewer strikeouts for better control, and so far he lowered his ERA over a run from last season.

The Royals send Kris Bubic against the Orioles and Tomoyuki Sugano. Bubic is back in the rotation after 27 bullpen appearances in 2024 in his return from Tommy John surgery. He continues to pitch well, maintaining his high K rate and low home run rate. Sugano, the 35-year-old rookie, posted a 3.00 ERA so far in six starts. He walked just six batters.

Another Eastern rookie, Roki Sasaki, battles Spencer Schwellenbach as the Dodgers visit the Braves. Sasaki started to go deeper in games, with 16 2/3 of his 25 1/3 innings in his last three starts. His walks have come down a bit also. He walked nine in his first two starts, and nine in his last four. Schwellenbach’s record is just 1-2 despite a 2.87 ERA. Pitchers in relief of Schwellenbach allowed 10 hits and 11 walks in 15 1/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Guardians go for a sweep of the historically bad White Sox as Matthew Boyd takes on Davis Martin. Boyd make his sixth start of the season, looking to improve on his 2.20 ERA. That’s well below his career average as he reduced his walk and home run rates in a small sample of 28 2/3 innings. Martin stands 0-3 despite a 3.29 ERA. That ERA may be better than his overall stats, as he allowed a .188 BA with runners in scoring position.

The Rays send Shane Baz against Zack Wheeler of the Phillies. Baz owns a .303 opposition OBP and a .347 slugging percentage, but that has not translated into wins. At the moment, Baz does not go deep in games. Wheeler looks for his 15th win of the season, which would be a new single season high for him. He is 23 Ks away from setting a single season mark in that stat as well.

Cole Ragans battles Luis Gil in the rubber game of the Royals at the Yankees. Ragans increased his K rate in a year that strikeouts are down, and he did that while reducing his walk rate. Gil also owns a K rate over 10 per 9 IP, but has yet to find his control.

Michael King and Bryan Woo take the mound in the Padres at the Mariners. King on the hill owns a 3.10 ERA, and needs about six inning to qualify for final season leaderboards. Woo comes in with a 2.36 ERA, and opponents own a low .230 BABIP against him, which makes up for his low K rate.

The Yankees visit the Rays, New York’s lead over Tampa Bay down to six games. The three game series can determine if the winged fish have a chance at the AL East title. Domingo German takes on Jeffrey Springs. After a rough start, German posted a 2.08 ERA in August, with six walks and twenty two strikeouts in 34 2/3 innings. If he is going to win back fans, that’s a good way to do it. Springs stands 11-5 with a 2.97 ERA since joining the Rays last season. That includes a 2.37 ERA against the Yankees.

The Twins and White Sox are battling both for a division title and a wild card slot as Sonny Gray takes on Davis Martin. Gray is back to the form of his best seasons, with solid three true outcomes and a low amount of hits allowed. The rookie Martin, with the backward name, has not allowed many hits given his low K rate. His K rate of 10.2 in the minors has yet to translate to the majors.
