Best Batter Monday

Aaron Judge of the Yankees moves 0.2 points ahead of Cal Raleigh of the Mariners as Sunday brings a number of changes to the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Judge ties Alex Rodriguez for sixth place on the Yankees home run list. With 11 more he will pass Yogi Berra, then Joe DiMaggio for fourth place. Lou Gehrig would still be a long way off.

In the Houston win, Raleigh’s teammate Randy Arozarena took an 0 for 4 to drop to fourth place, but Taylor Trammell of the Astros posted a game score of 78, tied for the highest of the day with Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox. Trammell went three for four with a walk, double and home run, while Abreu went two for three with two homers and a walk in a 6-1 win over the Cubs. Abreu’s Feet Feat

Wilyer Abreu joined a short list of players who hit and inside-the-park home run and a grand slam in the same game (two home runs). The inside the park dash was an example of Fenway taking away and giving . Abreu’s process on that homer was poor.

“When I hit the ball I thought it was a home run,” Abreu said. “When I saw it heading to the track, I thought the ball might not be gone so I started running hard and the ball didn’t go out and I was able to hit an inside-the-park homer.”

The ball hit in the triangle at Fenway, bounced away from the centerfielder, who then slipped. There was never even a throw to the plate. I wonder if there was a kangaroo court fine for not hustling.

Mister .500

The Red Sox home opener produced a ton of offense as Boston downed St. Louis 13-9. The Red Sox collected 16 hits and eight walks while the Cardinals came in at 13 hits and two walks.

Wilyer Abreu posted one of the big days, three for five with his third home run of the season. That leaves him 11 for 22 on the season for a .500 BA. With seven walks, his OBP is at .621, and with 22 total bases he’s slugging 1.000. Early in his peak years, everything is going right for the right fielder.

Best Batter Today

Shohei Ohtani of the Dodgers stayed atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings going two for four with his second home run of the season in a 5-4 win over the Tigers. Juan Soto of the Mets sits in second place as he singled and drew two walks in his team debut, a 3-1 Astros win. In the same game, Yordan Alvarez of the Astros drew two walks for fifth place. Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox posted the best game score of the day, an 85, one of four scores of at least 80. Abreu went three for thee with two home runs and a walk for a perfect day at the plate in the 5-2 win over the Rangers. Abreu now owns an isolated power of .209 (.268 BA/.477 Slug) with 60 of his 128 hits going for extra bases. A left-handed batter, he has yet to hit LHP well. He may remain a platoon player, but the Red Sox will take the side of the platoon that destroys right-handed pitching, He jumped from 306 to 267 in the rankings with that game.

All As

Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox hit a home run in the fifth to tie the Rangers at two, then a three-run shot in the top of the ninth for the 5-2 lead and the final score of the game. Abreu’s power in his short MLB career came mostly from doubles. If he’s added some power in his age 26 season, some of those doubles might become home runs, and he’ll be a more fearsome slugger.

Best Batter Today

Saturday’s games left the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings intact. Mookie Betts once again did not play due to injury. The Dodgers, with their big lead in the NL West, can afford to let him heal properly.

Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners did play. He singled and homered in a 7-5 Rays win. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros ranks third after collecting a double, home run, and walk in a 7-5 win over the Padres. His teammate, Alex Bregman, went one for four with a double to rank fifth. The Astros now hold a 1 1/2 game lead over the Mariners and a three game lead over the Rangers in the tight AL West race.

Ronald Acuna Jr.of the Braves posted a two for three with two walks to raise his OBP to .417. He ranks fourth.

Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox collected the highest game score of the day, an 83. He went five for five with a double and a walk in a 13-12, rain delayed slugfest won by the Orioles. Abreu owns 12 hits in 12 MLB games, five of them for extra bases.

Best Batter Today

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers moved back into the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. His five for nine with two doubles over the last two games brought him to fifth place. He now owns 47 doubles on the season, matching his single season high set in 2022. He complied the same number of doubles and triples as last season with two more home runs in thirty three fewer games. His extra-base hit high for a season was 83 in 2016. With 72 EXBH so far in 2023, that mark is well within reach.

Freeman’s teammate, Mookie Betts remains in first place as he posted a seven for eight with a double and a walk over the suspend game and yesterday scheduled game. He opens up a sixteen point lead over Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners. Seattle had the day off on Thursday. Ronald Acuna Jr.of the Braves ranks third, and his team also did not play.

Fourth place belongs to Aaron Judge of the Yankees, one for four with a home run and a walk in the 6-5 Nationals win. Those two teams continue to move in different directions.

The best game score of the day came off the bat of rookie Wilyer Abreu of the Red Sox, an 83. I discussed Abreu’s game here.

I Could Wilyer Away the Hours

Red Sox rookie Wilyer Abreu posted a game to remember in his third MLB contest as the goes four for five with a double and a home run in a 17-1 victory over the Astros. It was the 17th time the Astros allowed at least 17 runs in a game, and the first time since 9/10/2019.

Abreu hit .274/.391/.539 at AAA Worcester this season. He was in the Astros organization until the middle of last season when he came to Boston in the Christian Vazquez deal. So far, that deal looks pretty good for the Red Sox.
