Games of the Day

The Pirates try to earn a split with the visiting Reds as Cincinnati sends Tony Cingrani against Brandon Cumpton. Cingrani’s low hit and high strikeout rate have somewhat been balanced by a high walk rate, 13 batters in just 22 1/3 innings. Cumpton makes his 2014 debut after a strong but short stay in the majors in 2013. He has not allowed a run in his last 15 MLB innings, and posted a 1.42 ERA in three AAA starts this year.

Scott Kazmir will try to continue to impress as he leads the Athletics against the Astros. Brett Oberholtzer stands in opposition. Kazmir’s control is better than ever, with 24 K and just four walks in 27 1/3 innings. Oberholtzer is pitching well in terms of the three-true outcomes, but the Astros scored just seven runs in his four starts, so Brett has yet to win.

Games of the Day

The Giants go for their third short shutout in a row as Chad Gaudin takes on the Braves and Mike Minor. Chad pitched mostly out of the bullpen this season, but in two starts he walked one and struck out twelve in 12 innings. Minor starts his prime years with his best season, showing great control with 17 walks in 84 2/3 innings. He’s holding opponents to a .247 OBP.

Clayton Kershaw faces Brandon Cumpton, who makes his major league debut, as the Dodgers play the Pirates. Kershaw makes the Dodgers offensive woes very apparent as his 1.88 ERA is only good for a 5-4 record. Cumpton pitched to contact in the minors with 2.6 walks per nine and 5.8 K per nine. The Pirates have a pretty good defense to play behind him.

Finally, Jeremy Guthrie tries to keep the Royals hot as he battles the Rays and Alex Cobb. Gurthrie pitched poorly on the road this season, with his BA and OBP allowed about 100 points higher than at home, and his slugging percentage allowed about 200 points higher. He allowed 16 home runs, 10 of those away, but 14 solo shots. Cobb is off to a poor start in June, walking six in 11 2/3 innings after walking seven in May in 32 1/3 innings.
