Games of the Day

An usual game at Citi Field as the Phillies and Mets starters both make their major league debut. Enyel De Los Santos visits Drew Gagnon. De Los Santos is just 22, and is 9-3 in his first year at AAA with 1.89 ERA. Through his minor league career he owns good strikout and walk numbers. Gagnon comes up at seasonal age 28, so he is hardly a prospect. In four seasons at AAA he is 5-17 with a 5.86 ERA. I think these two call ups sum up the difference between the seasons of the two teams.

The Athletics and Astros offer another good match-up, as Sean Manaea faces Justin Verlander. Both show outstanding control, Verlander ranking 6th and Manaea 8th in walks per nine IP.

Arizona travels north to Colorado, leading the fourth place Rockies by 3 1/2 games. Patrick Corbin battles Tyler Anderson. Corbin does a great job of keeping batters off base, with a .202 BA allowed and a .262 OBP allowed. Anderson found his groove lately, with a 2.18 ERA in his last six starts. He struck out 41 and walked 8 in 41 1/3 innings.

Enjoy!

Phillies Getting On

The Phillies addressed a glaring offensive problem in the last few days, adding Carlos Santana on a three-year deal and trading away Freddy Galvis to the Padres. The Phillies posted a .315 OBP in 2017, ten points below the NL average. That ranked 13th in the league. First base came in at .309, while shortstop was a little better at .316. Galvis, however, holds a .287 OBP for his career, while his replacement, prospect J.P.Crawford did an excellent job of getting on base in the minors. Carlos Santana owns a .365 career OBP, and brings power to boot.

The Phillies may have gotten better on the other side of the ball, also. Enyel De Los Santos, the pitcher they received from the Padres, walks very few batters. Drawing a good number of walks while issuing few is a nice path to success.

Remaking the Mariners

Jerry Dipoto is remaking the Mariners so far by trading youth for age:

Seattle added to its bullpen Thursday, acquiring 38-year-old right-hander Joaquin Benoit from the San Diego Padres for two minor league prospects — right-handed pitcher Enyel De Los Santos and infielder Nelson Ward.

Dipoto saw Benoit pitch in September. He raved about his changeup and was impressed with his ability to still throw in the mid-90s by season’s end.

“A three-pitch, back-end guy with three out pitches at any given moment in time and that changeup just gives him a wipeout pitch to both sides,” the new Seattle GM said. “He’ll throw it to the right and the left. He’s been both durable and … a good fit for our ballpark.”

All de los Santos did in his age 19 season was strikeout lots of batters, walk few, and not give up home runs. Ward is 22, a bit old for A+ ball, but he’s in his second season in the majors. He seems to make a lot of plays per nine innings at shortstop, and has an okay OBP at that low level. The Mariners may get one or two years out of Benoit, but at that age a career can fall apart pretty quickly. de los Santos may end up looking like a pretty good pitcher, especially if he gets to play half his games in San Diego.
