Sutter Passes

Hall of Fame pitcher Bruce Suter died Thursday of cancer at the age 69:

Sutter is considered one of the first pitchers to throw a split-finger fastball. The right-hander played 12 seasons in the major leagues, was a six-time All-Star and ended up with 300 saves over his career.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends. Sutter’s family issued a lovely statement included in the article.

Sutter posted a high strikeout rate for his ERA, averaging 7.4 K per nine. He also did a good job limiting walks. He led the NL in saves four straight seasons and five times overall. He won the Cy Young Award in 1979, but his best season in terms of rWAR came in 1977. He threw 107 1/3 innings in relief, allowing just 69 hits, five of them home runs, while striking out 129. That was good for a 1.34 ERA.

Overall, he posted a 2.83 ERA for his career.
