Changes, Texas Rangers

The Rangers acquired the following players for their 2025 active roster:

The Rangers rebuilt their bullpen after posting the second highest walk rate in the majors, 4.16 per 9 IP, and the fourth highest home run rate at 1.18 per 9 IP. Martin, Armstrong, and Miller project to walk rates below three. Martin and Garcia project to less than a home run per 9 IP. As a group, they all should show much better control and a somewhat better ability to keep the ball in the park. It appears the Rangers understood the weakness of their pitchers and took drastic action to fix the problem.

Pederson is pretty much the definition of what a DH should be. He generates offense with little defensive ability. Rangers designated hitters produced a .204/.263/.322 slash line in 2024, which would be embarrassing for a catcher or a shortstop. Musings Marcels has Pederson at .254/.354/.461. Another problem fixed.

Burger takes over at first base, and this looks like a step back. They traded away Nathaniel Lowe to improve the pen with Garcia. Burger won’t get on base as much, but it’s possible out of Miami that his good home run power gets better.

Higashioka is a solid defensive backup behind the plate.

In general, the Rangers identified weaknesses and did a good job of filling the holes.

Cardinals Trade an Outfielder to the Rays

The Cardinals and Rays made a deal, St. Louis sending Dylan Carlson to Tampa Bay for reliever Shawn Armstrong. My first thought was going to be that Carlson is the next Randy Arozarena.

Rumors have circulated for several days about a potential trade of Dylan Carlson. The Cardinals wanted to clear roster space for the newly acquired Tommy Pham and also find bullpen help.

They (theoretically) did both by moving Carlson to the Rays (where he seems destined to become an impact player) for struggling right-handed reliever Shawn Armstrong.

The Cardinals likely needed to give Carlson some room to recover from an early season injury. The Rays might be better suited to do that right now.

Games of the Day

Toronto can clinch an AL Wild Card slot with a win over the Rays in Toronto. Shawn Armstrong takes on Hyun Jin Ryu. Armstrong is an opener with a 1.41 ERA in 51 innings this season. He has not allowed a run in eleven innings as a starter. Ryu allowed nine home runs in 49 innings this season.

The Rangers and Mariners meet against in Seattle, Andrew Heaney facing Luis Castillo. Heaney pitched 13 innings against Seattle this year, with ten hits and eight walks allowed for a 4.15 ERA. Castillo owns a 3.00 ERA against Texas this year, but with an 0-2 record.

Finally, Houston sends Justin Verlander against the Diamondbacks and Merrill Kelly. Verlander struck out 58 and walked eleven in 63 innings since rejoining Houston. Kelly tries to reach 13 wins for the third time in his career. He allowed just 138 hits in 170 2/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Marlins finish their series with the Braves as Pablo Lopez takes on Max Fried. Lopez pitched well this season, his only real weakness the home run ball. Most of those came on the road. Fried pitched great, and is set to cross his single season high of 165 2/3 innings, reached both in 2019 and 2021.

The Rays go for a sweep of the Yankees in Tampa Bay as Frankie Montas visits Shawn Armstrong. Montas as yet to win for the Yankees in five starts. He allowed 32 hits in 25 2/3 innings, five of those home runs. Armstrong makes his second start of the season. He seems to be more than an opener, as he did last three innings his first time out. He is a long time, one-inning reliever, so we’ll see how deep he goes today.

The streaking Mariners send George Kirby against the Guardians and Cal Quantrill. Kirby doesn’t walk many batters despite batters being able to lay off his pitches outside the zone. That may be why despite a high K rate, he also allows a high number of hits. Quantrill saw his K rate drop and his hit rate rise compared to 2021, which is likely why his ERA is up six tenths of a run.
