Stan Williams Passes

Former pitcher Stan Williams died Saturday at the age of 84:

The two-time All-Star right-hander was part of a powerhouse Los Angeles rotation that included Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale and Johnny Podres from 1960 to ’62.

Williams, known as the “Big Hurt” because of his penchant for pitching inside, had a record of 109-94 and a 3.48 ERA during his 14-year career in the majors.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

The nickname might not have been deserved. In his first four season with the Dodgers, 1958-1961, Williams hit 27 batters, sixth in the majors. At the top of the list with 62 HBP stood his teammate Drysdale. Williams did not hit a batter in 1962.

He hit more batters later in the American League. From 1968 to 1971 he hit 37 batters, third in the majors.
