I wonder if Hiroyuki Nakajima was thinking of Bill Bean when he referred to the Athletics GM as “sexy and cool.” 🙂 Or maybe he confused the real GM with Brad Pitt. 🙂

Going East for a Shortstop
The Athletics sign Hiroyuki Nakajima out of Japan to play shortstop. I like his NPB numbers, as he posted a high OBP with some pop. Take a look at his home run swing at the link.
By the way, don’t you love the score bug Japanese television uses? The cube is a great idea.
Jeter’s Replacement?
The Yankees took out an insurance policy today:
Confirmed that the Yankees have won the right to negotiate with Japanese shortstop Hiroyuki Nakajima. The 27-year-old hit .313/.389/.491 in four years in Japan, and he was posted this offseason.
Nakajima wasn’t a massive name on the international market, but he adds some middle infield and possibly utility depth behind Eduardo Nunez.
He also would appear to have a good eye for the strike zone and a little pop. Derek Jeter‘s career numbers are .313/.383/.449. Given past performance of Japanese hitters in the majors, Nakajima might come in at .270/.340/.440, which is not bad for a shortstop. We’ll see if the Yankees can sign the Japanese star.
