Pizarro Passes

Former pitcher Juan Pizarro died Thursday at the age of 84.

He was mean, left-handed, all-business and had a blazing fastball.

He was a big part of the fabulous White Sox pitching staffs of the 1960s that in many respects was the best in baseball — even better than the Dodgers.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

He did pitch best for the White Sox, generating 12.6 rWAR in his six seasons with that team. His WAR for his career came in at 16.2. He had his best combination of three-true outcomes with that team, striking out 6.9 per 9 IP, walking 3.3 per 9 IP, and allowing 0.8 HR per 9 IP. That was good for a 75-47 record and a 3.05 ERA.

He most relieved after leaving the White Sox, appearing in 206 games for the rest of his career, with 157 of those in relief.
