Mets Win

The Mets win game two of the doubleheader against the Tigers with a walk-off in the bottom of the ninth inning, taking the game 2-1. Detroit pitching held the Mets hitless through seven innings, the Tigers having scored a single run in the second inning. Detroit led1-0 in the ninth when Pete Alonso homered leading off the inning. A walk and a sacrifice later, Tyrone Taylor drops a single into leftfield for the game winning RBI.

That leaves the Marlins as the only winless team, and they trail the Cardinals 8-5 in the eighth inning. The Tigers were the last undefeated team.

Robinson Reincarnated

Evan Longoria of the Diamondbacks channels his inner Brooks Robinson as he snags a line drive off the bat of Tyrone Taylor of the Brewers with the bases loaded and one out. Off the bat, I thought it was a sure hit to leftfield, but Longoria dove to his left to snag the ball and threw to second to get the runner wo was too far off the bag to end the inning. The Diamondbacks continue to lead 4-3 as the game goes to the top of the sixth inning.

Diamondbacks-To-Backs

Corbin Burnes of the Brewers gives up three straight hits to start the third inning, the last two home runs by Corbin Carroll and Ketel Marte. Burnes gave up 22 home runs in 193 2/3 innings, so his rate was fine. The DBacks are seeing the ball well and hitting it hard in this inning, and tied the Brewers at three. Tyrone Taylor hit a two run blast for Milwaukee in the second inning.

Brewers Score

Tyrone Taylor singles with one out in the top of the 11th inning to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead over the Yankees. They finally have a chance to finish this game with a winning no-hitter. It would be the first 11 innings no-hitter in the history of the game. It would also mean the Yankees have been no-hit and threw a no-hitter in the same season.

Update: That’s it now for the eleventh.

Power Only

In recent weeks I keep noticing batters coming up with the best game scores of the day as being power hitters who do a poor job of getting on base. To be a bit more technical, players with a high isolated power (Slugging Percentage – Batting average, or Extra Bases/ AB) and a low OBP. In my lifetime, these hitter were rare. Even sluggers who hit for a low batting average struck enough fear into the opposition that they were often walked enough to produce a good OBP (the Ken Phelps school of hitters).

Has a new type of hitter really emerged, or is this just an random sampling looking like a trend?

The study looks at players with at least 300 PA in a season. They must have an isolated power greater than .200 and an OBP less then .300. The query yields 148 player seasons since 1920. Sixty eight of those seasons occurred from 2011 on. In fact there have been at least four such players in every full season since 2011. The only season outside of that range with as many players as five players was the 1986 season, with a total of six.

The first such player was Jack Graham in 1946, who had a very short career. The 1946 season was an inflection point as players started to return from WWII. Graham returned to the majors in 1949 for a full season with the Browns, but was out of the majors after that.

The 1955 season was the first year with multiple players as Bill Wilson, Don Zimmer, and Del Crandall all make the cut. Zimmer played in twelve season where his pop was his biggest offensive weapon. Multiple players do not appear in a season again until 1982, when Dave Kingman and a young Gary Gaetti make the list. Kingman makes the list five times, tied with Steve Balboni for most such seasons. The 1986 season is the first with more than three players, and between that and 2011, there were only four season with as many as four players.

This year’s list include Giancarlo Stanton, Salvador Perez, Tyrone Taylor, Cal Raleigh, and Jack Suwinski. Perez made the list multiple times.

Tolerating this type of offense may be a reaction to pitchers becoming tougher to hit due to high strike out rates. If hits are rare, it’s better if they are long distance hits, since they tend to do more damage.

Best Batter Today

Games on Saturday brought a major shakeup to the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Aaron Judge remains as on top as he pretty much provided the only offense for the Yankees in the game against the Rays. In the leadoff slot, Judge collects two of the Yankees three hits, and his 52nd homer provides the only run as Tampa Bay wins 2-1 to cut the Yankees division lead to four games.

The curse of Joey Gallo continues. Since August second, Judge is the only hitter on the Yankees doing well. It almost make me wonder if the animosity of fans toward Gallo infected the rest of the team.

Judge is now on a pace for 63 home runs, with his most likely total at 59. The probability of him hitting at least 62 home runs is now 0.17, the highest level of the season.

Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals broke out of his mini slump to stay in second place. He goes two for four with a walk and two RBI in an 8-4 win over the Cubs. His two RBI put him in the NL lead in that category. That raises his probability of winning the triple crown to 0.048. He still trails in the home run race by two.

Austin Riley of the Braves moves into third place as he homers and walks in a 2-1 victory over the Marlins. That gives him 73 extra-base hits on the season and the Braves now trail the Mets by two games in the NL East. Mookie Betts uses a triple, home run, and walk to move into fourth place as the Dodgers blow out the Padres 12-1.

Nathaniel Lowe of the Rangers rounds out the top five after hitting his 23rd home run of the season in a 5-3 Red Sox win.

The best game score of the day belongs to Tyrone Taylor of the Brewers. His three for five with a double and two home runs is good for an 80 as Milwaukee beats Arizona 8-6. Power is Taylor’s strength as a hitter. Thirty three of his 70 hits this season went for extra-bases, and for his career owns a .450 slugging percentage on a .238 batting average. His .301 career OBP means that power comes at a high cost in outs.

Best Batter Today

Michael Conforto of the Mets jumps to the top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings after posting a one for three night with a home run and a walk. The Mets come back from an early 5-1 deficit to beat the Orioles 7-6. Conforto passes an idle Trea Turner of Washington, who falls to second place.

Mookie Betts of the Dodgers posted a one for five night, but the one hit was a lead-off home run as the Dodgers beat the Diamondbacks 6-4 in ten innings. Betts holds third place. Nelson Cruz and the Twins are idle as Cruz sits in fourth place, and Manny Machdo of the idle Padres sits in fifth place.

There were a number of high batter game scores Wednesday with two very high scoring games played. Adam Duvall of the Braves posted a 98 for his three home run, nine RBI game. His teammate, Ronald Acuna came in at 86 as he doubled and homered, and Tyrone Taylor of the Brewers posted an 85 for a 4 for 5 night with two doubles and a homer. Freddie Freeman‘s 74, however, coupled with his outstanding overall play, puts him in sixth place in the batter rankings, .01 points behind Machado. Just four points separate one from seven, as I expect to see some churning.
