Misiorowski Tires

Jacob Misiorowski came on in relief in the first inning after opener Aaron Ashby allowed a run. He held the Dodgers at bay until the sixth inning, when he tired and the middle of the Dodgers order started getting to him. He left after five innings and nine strikeouts, with the last three batters reaching, leading to a run and the Dodgers lead. He also allowed an unearned run as closer Abner Uribe entered the game to try to stop the scoring, and threw away a pickoff attempt.

The opener strategy didn’t work. The Brewers might have been better off starting Misiorowski and pulling him after five innings. They could have then gone with their conventional reliever strategy. Ball players like to know their rolls, and the opener/closer use throws chaos into the system.

Update: Jackson Chourio just left the field with an injury to his right leg after a swing.

Playoffs Today

The Cubs and Brewers play their NLDS game five at 8 PM EDT Saturday night, 7 PM local time. Chicago decided to send Drew Pomeranz to the mound. He allowed nothing in his five relief appearances in this post season, no walks, no hits, not runs while striking out five. The former starter made two opens this season, so it looks like the Cubs are going with a bullpen game, although I wouldn’t be surprised if they let Pomeranz pitch until he made a mistake. Might they let him go three innings if he is effective?

The Brewers have not named a starter yet. There is speculation that Jacob Misiorowski will be the long man in the game, either as the starter on in long middle relief job, the job he did well in game 2.

Since this type of elimination game in all hands on deck, we shouldn’t be surprised that a star starter will not be taking the hill in the opening inning.

So far, the home team won each game of the series. The Brewers, trying for their first World Series title hope that holds up.

Enjoy!

Update: Trevor Megill gets the start for the Brewers. He posted a 2.49 ERA in 50 relief appearances in 2025. He struck out 60 batters in 47 innings, allowing just three home runs. So a bullpen game on both sides.

Games of the Day

Parker Messick of the Guardians is off to a good start to his career. He faces the Red Sox and Brayan Bello Monday afternoon. In 13 2/3 innings, Messick walked one and struck out 12, giving up just one run along the way. In the minors he struck out over three batters for every one he walked. Bello enters the game with a 2.99 ERA, having allowed just 14 home runs in 141 2/3 innings. He tries to keep Cleveland from gaining in the wild card race.

First place teams battle in Milwaukee as the Phillies visit the Brewers. Taijuan Walker takes on rookie Jacob Misiorowski. Walker comes into the game with a good 2.83 walks per nine IP. His drop in BA allowed this season to .260 from .317 last year is due to more batted balls in play turning into outs, as his BABIP dropped from .320 to .285. Misiorowski struck out 65 batters in 43 2/3 innings. He owned a 2.45 ERA after six starts, allowing 15 hits in 29 1/3 innings. Batters learned to be more selective with him since then, as he walked nine batter in 14 1/3 innings and allowed 12 hits.

Games of the Day

The Cubs and Brewers are tied for first place in the NL Central as Chicago sends Matthew Boyd against rookie sensation Jacob Misiorowski. Boyd is in the second season of a career turn around during which time 13-5 with a 2.33 ERA. Misiorowski makes the seventh start of his career, and he already struck out 40 batters in just 29 1/3 innings.

The Nationals send Brad Lord against Framber Valdez and the sliding Astros. Lord had a tough transition to a starter so far. His ERA stands at 4.15 versus 2.79 as a reliever. Valdez, at 11-4 has won at least 11 games five seasons in a row. He owns a .660 winning percentage since the start of the 2021 season, along with a 3.02 ERA.

Games of the Day

Casey Mize takes on Mitch Keller as the Tigers continue their series in Pittsburgh. Having gone 3-7 in their last ten games, the Tigers no longer own the best record in baseball, but still have the biggest division lead at ten games over the Guardians. Mize goes for his tenth win of the season, trying to hit double digits for the first time. He walked just 22 batters in 88 2/3 innings. Much is made of Paul Skenes lack of support, but with a 3.48 ERA, he deserves better than a 3-10 record. He cut down his home runs per nine innings from 1.16 in 2024 to 0.68 this season.

The Yankees try to even their series with the Blue Jays as Cam Schlittler faces Max Scherzer. It’s not a great pitching matchup, but I do wonder how often two pitchers with three letter first names with an “a” in the middle and last names that start with “Sch” and end in “er” faced each other. My quick research says this would be the first time it happened in the year covered by the Day by Day Database, which goes back to 1920.

The Brewers send Jacob Misiorowski against the Mariners and Logan Gilbert. Since his arrival, and the eventual return of Brandon Woodruff, the Brewers rotation owns the second highest average game score in the majors. They’ve achieved that by limiting the negatives. The Mariners are fourth, as they go fairly deep in games.

Finally, in a game of very long names, Simeon Woods Richardson faces Yoshinobu Yamamoto as the Twins try to even their series with the Dodgers. Woods Richardson tries to win six games for the first time in his career. He limits power, holding the opposition to a .398 slugging percentage. Yamamoto is another starter suffering from a lack of support, just 8-7 despite a 2.59 ERA.

Out K’ing Kershaw

Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers gave up a lead-off home run to Shohei Ohtani, and that was the only run the Dodgers would score. The rookie starter struck out a dozen in six innings as the Brewers took the game 3-1. Kershaw pitched well, allowing two runs in six innings, but only struck out three.

Misiorowski up his K total to 33 in 25 2/3 innings. He only walked on batter tonight, as walks were his weakness through his first four starts. His ERA now stands at 2.81.

Games of the Day

There will be something old, new, and blue as the Dodgers send Clayton Kershaw against rookie Jacob Misiorowski in Milwaukee. Kershaw’s three true outcome rates this season are all in the wrong direction comparted to his career norms, but he remains tough to hit despite the lack of strikeouts. Misiorowski suffered his first rough start last time out against the Mets, and the Dodgers offer another tough offense.

The Guardians send Joey Cantillo against the Astros and Hunter Brown. Cantillo makes his second start after 21 relief appearances and hopes to give Cleveland a two-game win streak. In his 70 1/3 MLB innings over two seasons, Cantillo struck out 85 batters in 70 1/3 innings. Brown leads the majors in ERA at 1.82, holding batters to just 65 hits in 104 innings.

Finally, Taijuan Walker faces Robbie Ray as the Phillies battle the Giants. Walker nearly cut his ERA in half from last season. He dropped it from 7.10 to 3.64 by improving all his three true outcomes, but especially by cutting his home run rate. Ray pitched very well with runners in scoring position, allowing 12 hits in 74 PA.

Games of the Day

See yesterday’s post for the Freddy Peralta matchup versus Clay Holmes as the Brewers make up a game with the Mets. There is a battle of rookies in game two as Jacob Misiorowski faces Blade Tidwell. They’ve pretty much had polar opposite starts to their careers.

Will Warren of the Yankees faces Jose Berrios of the Blue Jays. A win for the Blue Jays puts Toronto into a tie with New York for the lead in the AL East.

The Royals send Noah Cameron against the Mariners and Logan Gilbert. Cameron, with a 2.79 ERA, deserves a better record than his 2-4 mark. The rookie owns a low K rate, but batters hold a .197 BABIP against him. Gilbert blows away batters, but gets hurt by the power against him.

Games of the Day

It’s a battle of great young pitchers as Paul Skenes and the Pirates take on Jacob Misiorowski and the Brewers. Skenes quickly morphed from a thrower to a pitcher when you compare 2025 to 2024. He strikes out two fewer batters per nine innings, but both his opposition BABIP and batting average allowed are down. More balls in play with worse results allows him to go deeper in games. Misiorowski allowed just one hit, a home run, in his first eleven MLB innings. He walked five and struck out ten.

Max Scherzer returns to the mound as the Blue Jays face the Guardians and Gavin Williams. Scherzer only pitched 46 1/3 innings since the start of 2024, but walked just ten batters in that time with 41 K’s. Williams’ weakness comes from walks with 111 issued in his 233 1/3 career innings, 4.28 per nine IP.

The Rays try to keep their surge toward first place going with Drew Rasmussen facing the Royals and Michael Wacha. Rasmussen goes for his fifth consecutive season with an ERA under 3.00, but so far in only one of those did he pitch more than 100 innings. Wacha goes for his fourth straight season with an ERA in the low 3.00s, and he may get to 30 starts for the first time since 2017,

Games of the Day

Only one afternoon game this Wednesday as the Red Sox send Garrett Crochet against the Mariners and Luis Castillo. Among his many feats, Crochet holds batters to a .260 OBP this season. That’s a bit of an over estimate, as he removed nine runners with double plays and caught stealing. Castillo is close, with a .284 OBP allowed and seven runners removed.

The early evening presents Andrew Heaney and the Pirates visiting Tarik Skubal and the Tigers. Skubal sits atop the Tom Tango Enhanced Cy Young Points leaderboard, and it would have been cool to see him pitch against number two, Paul Skenes. Heaney, however, does a great job of limiting hits and walks, helping him to a 3.33 ERA.

Jacob Misiorowski pitched five no-hit innings in his debut for the Brewers, and we’ll see if the Cubs and can end that streak. Jameson Taillon takes the hill for Chicago. Misiorowski showed some wildness as he walked four to go with his five strikeouts. Taillon may benefit from the Cubs defense, as he owns a .217 opposition BABIP against his career average of .288.

Misiorowski’s Crew

Jacob Misiorowski of the Brewers on Thursday night became the fourteenth pitcher since 1920 to record at least four no hit innings in his MLB debut. Misiorowski went five shutout innings, walking four and striking out five as the Milwaukee beat St. Louis 6-0. Misiorowski left the game due to leg cramps.

Of the fourteen pitchers, eight accomplished the feat in a relief appearance. Ross Stripling of the Dodgers holds the record with 7 1/3 no hit innings on 4/8/2016. The most famous of the group would be Max Scherzer, who pitched four innings in relief for the Diamondbacks on 4/29/2008. Note that two pitchers, Bobo Holloman and Tyler Gilbert threw no-hitters in their first starts, but not their first appearance.
