Kelvim Escobar Hurt

Kelvim Escobar’s shoulder is bad again:

The Mets will survive without Escobar, so the biggest question isn’t necessarily what they’ll do for a setup man. The biggest question is how much the Mets knew about the state of his shoulder when they signed him, and whether he really should have been pitching in the winter leagues this year.

This is just another black mark against the Mets medical staff. How long does this go on before someone revamps the system? If I’m missing positive stories about the medical staff, please forward them to me.

Raising the Escobar

Kelvim Escobar suffers a bump on the road to recovery as he develops soreness in his throwing shoulder.

Escobar was sore last month and was examined by team doctor David Altchek. He recently has been working out with Johan Santana and Mets rehab specialist Chris Correnti in Fort Myers, Fla. Correnti told Escobar he should ease up on throwing and focus on strengthening the shoulder, agent Peter Greenberg said.

Like Jair Jurrjens, this seems minor at the moment. Unlike Jair, however, Esobar has an injury history that makes one worry.

Escobar a Reliever

The Mets plan to use Kelvim Escobar as a setup man. I guess that makes sense, as relieving might be less stressful on a pitcher who missed most of the last two seasons with injuries. However, it makes the $1.2 million spent on him look less like a good deal. If Escobar could give the Mets 25 starts and pitch decently, that’s a steal, and something they could really use. Spending that kind of risky money just to have him pitch the eighth seems excessive.
