Games of the Day

Kendrys Morales tries to tie the record for consecutive games with a home run as the Blue Jays play the Orioles.

Carlos Rondon is a bright spot for the White Sox, and he faces the Yankees and Masahiro Tanaka. Rondon brought his home runs allowed under control this season, allowing nine dingers in 86 1/3 innings. Tanaka, on the other hand, allowed 23 home runs in 120 innings, but walked just 30 batters.

Washington is running out of time in the NL East. They open a three-game series in Philadelphia with Stephen Strasburg facing Zach Eflin. Strasburg’s 4.23 ERA would be the worst of his career, and it’s mostly due to a high home run rate. He gave up five runs in four innings the first time he faced the Phillies this year. Eflin owns a 6.48 ERA against Washington in two starts.

Finally, the Athletics visit the Astros as Brett Anderson takes on Gerrit Cole. Anderson allowed six of his seven home runs on the road. Cole walked eight and struck out 38 A’s in 24 2/3 innings, helping him to a 2.92 ERA against the division rivals.

Enjoy!

Suspend Rondon

I will continue my crusade for lengthy suspensions for pitchers who intentionally hit batters. The latest idiot is Carlos Bruce Rondon:

“If [Rondon] doesn’t want to compete in a situation that’s not sexy, they should just send his ass home,” said Royals pitcher Danny Duffy, who was more active in the scrum than any player on either team when the benches cleared.

No punches were thrown and only one player — Rondon — was ejected.

That “non-sexy” situation was the final inning of a blowout game that ended in a 16-2 victory for the Royals. It’s possible that Rondon was miffed when Lorenzo Cain scored from second on a single rather than stop at third base as is sometimes expected and appreciated in the waning moments of lopsided games.

None of his Tigers teammates seem very supportive, as Detroit needed to use a position player to pitch.

Ausmus said he didn’t get an explanation from umpires about why Rondon was ejected while Moustakas, who threw his bat down and took a step toward the mound, was not. “But I didn’t need a written report,” he said.

I still feel intentionally hitting a batter should be a one-month suspension. It’s dangerous enough to stand at the plate when the pitcher is trying to hit the strike zone.

Thumbs Down

I just heard on the Tigers broadcast that Justin Verlander was removed from the game against the Royals with cracked skin on his thumb. I wouldn’t be surprised if all the cold weather was taking a toll. Justin allowed eight hits and two runs in seven innings of work, walking one and striking out four. The Tigers lead the Royals 3-2, and Bruce Rondon makes his major league debut in relief.

Update: Rondon allows a run, and the team are tied at three.
