Birds for Fish

The Blue Jays and the Marlins made a trade Tuesday:

The Blue Jays get a good bullpen arm and some outfield depth, even though Dickerson is on the illjured list right now. The Marlins get a good arm in McInvale who needs to work on his control, but they also get an infielder that allows them to keep younger prospects in the minors working on their game:

The Marlins see Panik as a way to help the development of some of the young infielders they have in their system. Guys like Lewin Diaz and José Devers have been called up because of a flurry of injuries, despite not necessarily being MLB ready. General Manager Kim Ng said picking up Panik will allow the Marlins to keep guys working on their development in the minor leagues.

“When we bring guys up we want it to be when they’re ready,” Ng said.

It’s a minor deal as trading season gets underway, but one that probably helps both teams, the Blue Jays now and the Marlins in the future.

Best Batter Today

There is no change in the order of the top five for the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings, but the scores tightened with Friday’s results. Max Muncy of the Dodgers remains in first place after drawing a walk in five trips in an 8-5, extra innings Giants win. That allows Vladimir Guerrero Jr.of the Blue Jays to close the gap with a one for four to 0.7 points as Toronto pounds Cleveland 11-2 in a rain shortened game. His teammate, Marcus Semien, goes one for five to hold fourth place.

Fernando Tatis Jr.of the Padres homers and walks in an 11-3 win over Houston to keep third place. His eighth inning home run would tie the game at two, as the Padres score eight runs in two extra innings to win the game. Mark Canha of the Athletics reaches base twice with a walk and hit by pitch in a 3-1 win over the Angels to hold fifth place.

The best game score of the night goes to Joe Panik of the Blue Jays. He posts a four for four night with a home run for an 80. it was his first home run of the season, and an outstanding game in a rather lackluster year for the second baseman.

Close Friday

Friday saw six games decided by one run, three games decided by two runs, and a three-run game decided in extra innings. Two of the games were 1-0 affairs. First, David Price pitched seven shutout innings at his old home field as Boston beat Tampa Bay. Price walked none and struck out five, and his return to form is a huge positive for the Red Sox.

For the second day in a row, the Giants beat the Dodgers 1-0 on a Joe Panik solo home run. Johnny Cueto and Alex Wood combined for 15 shutout innings, but Dodgers closer Kenley Jansen took the loss as Panik took a 0-1 pitch out of the park. That’s what the Dodgers get for using Jansen in a non-save situation!

It took 17 innings, but the Marlins beat the Cubs 2-1 for Miami’s first win of the season. Kris Bryant and Ben Zobrist collected three hits each, but the rest of the Cubs collected just two. Three singles with two out in the bottom of the 17th win the game, Miguel Rojas getting the walk-off hit. The Miami bullpen pitched 11 1/3 shutout innings.

The Brewers and Padres wound up close due to the Brewers scoring five runs in the top of the ninth inning, the last three on a Ryan Braun home run to beat the Padres 8-6. Braun drove in five in the game, two with outs.

There’s been a lot of edge of your seat baseball the first two days of the season.

Panik Doesn’t Panik

Lorenzo Cain leads off the bottom of the third with a single. Eric Hosmer then hits a hard ground ball up the middle, and Joe Panik makes not only a great diving catch, but flips the ball to the shortstop for the out. Hosmer is called safe at first on a head-first slide, but the play is under review, and he looks out. A great play by Panik. The game is tied at two.

Update: Hosmer is called out on review.

Update: By the way, Joe Panik could be Buster Posey’s brother.

Update: Billy Butler grounds out to end the inning. At the end of three, the Giants and Royals are tied at two.

Panik Doubles

Joe Panik doubles leading off the fifth for the Giants. That chases Jason Vargas with the Royals leading the Giants 4-2.

Update: Panik comes around to score on a Hunter Pence single, Pence’s second RBI of the game. The Royals lead is down to 4-3.

Update: Danny Duffy relieves Jason Frasor and gives up a single to Pablo Sandoval. The Giants have the tying run at third with one out.

Update: Duffy walks Brandon Belt to load the bases.

Update: Juan Perez hits a dying quail to center. Jarrod Dyson runs in and makes a great diving catch. The run scores from third, but that might drop in front of a lot of centerfielders, making the situation worse. The Royals and Giants are tied at four.

Update: Brandon Crawford strikes out looking to end the inning. It’s been a long game, but an exciting one.

Rare Royals Slip

A lead-off walk to Gregor Blanco in the top of the seventh leads to a run as Joe Panik is credited with an RBI triple to earn the RBI. The triple, however, was based on a poor fielding play by the Royals rightfielder, Nori Aoki. He took a bad route to the ball, then tried to slide to stop it and the ball scooted by him. It’s a rare poor defensive play for Kansas City. The Giants lead 6-0.

Update: With one out, Pablo Sandoval singles through a drawn in infield, and the Giants lead 7-0.

Update: That’s it for the Giants as they lead 7-0 at the stretch.

Update: Salvador Perez homers in the bottom of the seventh to put the Royals on the board. They still trail 7-1 at the end of seven.

Panik Attack

With two out in the bottom of the third, Gregor Blanco singles, and Joe Panik follows with a home run down the rightfield line. The Cardinals lead doesn’t last long as the two-run shot puts the Giants up 2-1 at the end of three. That’s the Giants first home runs since Brandon Belt hit one in game two of the NLDS against Washington.

Update: Matt Adams leads off the fourth and immediately ties the game with a home run to right. The ball seems to be carrying well tonight. St. Louis and San Francisco are tied at two.

Update: With two out, Tony Cruz takes Madison Bumgarner out to leftfield, and the Cardinals lead 3-2. It’s a long-ball game for a change.

First Walk

Jordan Zimmermann goes 8 2/3 innings before walking Joe Panik. It’s the first walk of the game. Matt Williams comes out to make the a pitching change with Buster Posey coming to the plate.

With the count 1-0, Zimmermann threw a pitch that looked to me like it caught the outside corner. The strike zone was generous tonight, so that call was surprising. Panik hit a deep line drive foul on the next pitch, and Zimmermann got careful and walked him. That ball call was the difference between Zimmermann finishing and not.

The Nationals lead 1-0 with Drew Storen pitching.

Update: Buster Posey singles to put runners at first and second.

Update: Pablo Sandoval doubles down the leftfield line. Panik scores, but Posey is thrown out at the plate. There’s going to be a challenge on the play at the plate, and Posey may be safe.

Update: The replay calls Posey out. It was too close to call, I believe, so they could not overturn. Truthfully, I couldn’t tell. He looked safe on some angles, out on others.

Update: The Nationals go down 1-2-3 in the ninth, and the game goes to extra innings tied at one.
