Games of the Day

The Diamondbacks attempt to salvage the four game series hosting the Dodgers with a split as Arizona trails Los Angeles by five games. Jack Flaherty takes on Eduardo Rodriguez. Flaherty stands 3-1 for the Dodgers in five starts. He does not go deep into games, however, and he does have a weakness for giving up the longball, with six homers allowed in 28 1/3 innings. Rodriguez makes his fifth start for the Diamondbacks. Both his K and BB rate are low, so a good contact team like the Dodgers should be able to put the ball in play against him.

Logan Gilbert and Osvaldo Bido take the mound as the Mariners visit the Athletics. Gilbert’s 3.09 ERA is lower than each of his previous two season in which he won 13 games. He’s 7-10 this season. Seattle is a fairly low scoring team at 3.97 runs per game, but that drops to 3.56 runs per game in Gilbert’s starts. The A’s are going out on a strong note, 22-17 since the All-Star Break. Bido stands 4-2 with a 3.03 ERA in that stretch. He allowed just two home runs in 38 2/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The hit fest of the day probably takes place in Washington where the Rockies send Cal Quantrill against the Nationals and Patrick Corbin. Quantrill pitched worse on the road this season with a 4.06 ERA at home and a 5.10 ERA on the road. Corbin allowed 168 hits this season, the most in the NL.

The Rays and A’s offer a good pitching matchup with Jeffrey Springs taking on Osvaldo Bido of the Athletics. Springs make his fifth start of the season after returning from Tommy John surgery. He owns a 3.86 ERA, but his five walks and 21 strikeouts in 18 2/3 innings is a sign that his recovery went well. Bido dropped his ERA over two runs compared to his first MLB season in 2023. He’s allowing fewer hits and home runs.

Finally, the Mets face the Padres in San Diego with Luis Severino and Dylan Cease taking the hill. Severino limited power this season, with the opposition slugging .375 against him compared to his career .392 mark. Cease is two wins away from tying his career single season high of 14 wins. He is second in total strikeouts and strikeouts per 9 IP in the NL.

Bido, Bido, Flat on His Seato

Oakland shuts out Toronto 1-0 behind six shutout innings by Osvaldo Bido and three hitless innings by the bullpen. Bido lowers his ERA to 3.92 in 39 innings with the Athletics this seadon. He’s only allowed two home runs in that time. He’s done a better job of keeping the ball in the park since he reached the majors.

Valdimir Guerrero of the Blue Jays extended his hit streak to 22 games with a one for four.

Games of the Day

The Braves and Mets play game four of their weekend series, the winner pulling ahead of the loser in the NL Wild Card race. Reynaldo Lopez takes on David Peterson. Lopez, with a 2.12 ERA, is a little short on innings to qualify for the ERA title. Seven solid innings would get him on the leaderboard for a few days. Peterson helped stabilize the Mets rotation, going 5-0 in nine starts with a 3.14 ERA. He could help more by starting to go deeper in games.

The Cubs and Royals play the rubber game of their weekend series with Javier Assad facing Cole Ragans. Assad is Mr. No Decision this season, with just a 3-4 record in 18 starts despite a 3.15 ERA. He is averaging just five innings per start, leaving on average half a game for things to change, or not pitching long enough to get a win. Ragans ranks third in lowest HR allowed per 9 IP since the start of the 2023 season.

The Athletics and the Angels finish their four game series as Oakland goes for a sweep. Oakland is 14-7 in July, tied with the Diamondbacks for the best record in the month. Osvaldo Bido faces Jose Soriano. Bido makes his third start of the season after pitching mostly in relief. It looks like he made an emergency start in May in a doubleheader that didn’t go well. His last appearance, however, was a five inning stint against the Astros in which he allowed one run in five innings, walking none and striking out six. Soriano limited hits this season with a .256 opposition BABIP. He also does a decent job of keeping the ball in the park.

Finally, the Yankees and Red Sox play the rubber game of their series at Fenway on Sunday Night Baseball. Youngsters Jarren Duran and Anthony Volpe are at the top of the plate appearance list in the AL. Note that Duran blowing Volpe away in terms of production. He is exactly the kind of player a team wants to get tons of PA. Volpe got off to a good start, but overall he’s been a bit of an out machine, basically flushing opportunities away. Both, however, are extremely good at collecting triples, a rare skill these days. Duran leads the AL in both doubles and triples, no mean feat.

Games of the Day

At 1 PM EDT, the Cubs face the Cardinals in London. Justin Steele takes on Adam Wainwright. Steele, in his third MLB season, lowered his ERA again, coming into the game with a 2.71 mark. His home run rate keeps getting better, as he allowed just three dingers in 73 innings this season. Wainwright’s strikeout rate fell off a cliff this season, down to 4.9 per 9 IP compared to 6.7 per 9 IP last season. With that his hits allowed and ERA both rocketed up.

The Diamondbacks lead the Giants by 2 1/2 games as the team battle in San Francisco. Merrill Kelly takes the hill against rookie Ryan Walker. Kelly lowered his ERA nearly half a run from 2022. He cut down on hits allowed by pushing his K rate above 9.0 per 9 IP. Walker owns a 1.56 ERA in 17 1/3 innings, as most of the damage against him came with the bases empty.

Two youngsters take the mound in Miami as the Pirates send Osvaldo Bido against Bryan Hoeing. The rookie Bido worked ten innings in two starts and has yet to allow an extra-base hit. Hoeing owns a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings, with a 1.15 ERA at home in 15 2/3 innings.

Games of the Day

The Cubs and Pirates open a series in Pittsburgh, the Cubs just 1 1/2 games behind the Pirates for third place in the NL Central, the Cubs only four games out of first place. Drew Smyly takes on Osvaldo Bido. Smyly’s ERA is about a run better than his FIPs, mostly due to allowing a .183 BA with men in scoring position. Bido made a successful first start in the majors, striking out six and allowing one run in four innings. At seasonal age 27, he is not a prospect, and was quite wild in the minors.

First place teams square off in Milwaukee as Merrill Kelly leads the Diamondbacks against Corbin Burnes and the Brewers. Kelly’s nine home runs allowed come mostly from his home ballpark, as he allowed just two of his seven on the road. That helped him to a 5-0 record away with a 2.12 ERA. Burnes returned to his low walk ways in June, posting a 2.70 ERA for the month.

Finally, the Padres face the Giants with Michael Wacha battling Ryan Walker. Wacha allowed just six home runs in 74 2/3 innings, helping him to a 2.89 ERA. The rookie Walker makes his first MLB start after eleven relief appearances. Given that he made three short starts in the minors this year, the Giants look to use him as an opener. He walked two and struck out 15 batters in 14 2/3 relief innings.
