Lou Gorman, the architect of the 1986 Boston Red Sox, passed away early this morning. There are no details at the moment. My thoughts go out to his family and friends.
I was a weekend season ticket holder at Fenway that year, and it was an exciting season. It was a great time watching Wade Boggs foul off pitch after pitch until he could find one to dump into leftfield, Jim Rice locked in for the last time in his career, Tony Armas‘s moon shots, and Rich Gedman hitting and catching well. On the pitching side, Roger Clemens, Bruce Hurst and Oil Can Boyd mowed down the competition, but it all led up to a tragic finish. Still, one of the most memorable seasons I witnessed, thanks to Lou.
