Games of the Day

It’s an unusual Wednesday as the latest start comes at 7 PM EDT. If you’re a baseball aficionado, you can spend from noon on watching games and still get to bed at a decent hour on the east coast.

Steven Matz leads the Cardinals against Paul Blackburn and the Athletics. Matz eschewed the three true outcomes so far this season, with eight strikeouts, three walks, and one home run allowed in 15 innings. While his ERA stands at 1.06, three of the six runs he allowed were unearned. Blackburn allowed no runs of any kind in his first 19 innings this season. He too comes in with low K, BB, and HR rates, so look for the defenses to get a lot of action this afternoon.

Andrew Abbott and the Reds face Bryce Miller and the Mariners. Abbott continues today’s trend of good results on higher ball in play rates, as he and the defense held batters to a .250 BABIP in 2024. Miller finally breaks the mold with 17 K in 18 1/3 innings, six walks and two home runs allowed. He allowed just 12 hits for a 1.96 ERA.

Finally, Reid Detmers and Zack Littell square off in St. Petersburg as the Angels battle the Rays. Detmers reduced his percentage of fly balls this season, leading to no home runs allowed. Most of the damage against Littell this year came with the bases empty, which is why the hits against him haven’t hurt his ERA much.

Games of the Day

The Angels visit the Red Sox with Reid Detmers facing Tanner Houck. Both are off to great starts with Detmers striking out 19 batters in eleven innings, Houck, 17 batters in 12 innings. Houck has yet to allow a run. There is the chance of rain in Boston.

The red hot Royals appropriately play in Queens. Michael Wacha takes on the Mets and Luis Severino. Unlike recent seasons, Wacha is keeping the ball on the ground, and the Royals defense is turning those into outs. He allowed just five hits and two walks in 12 innings in 2024. Severino’s high strikeout rate has not prevented hits this season, but it helped keep his ERA low at 3.60.

Games of the Day

The Orioles take on the Pirates with Tyler Wells facing Bailey Falter. Wells proved to be stingy with walks in his career, and did not issue one in his first start of 2024. The Pirates batters lead the NL in walks this season, however. Falter owns a similar career profile, giving up hits and home runs but limiting bases on balls. The Orioles batters sit tied for last in the AL with just 19 walks in seven games.

On the west coast, the Red Sox continue their series against the Angels with Garrett Whitlock opposing Reid Detmers. Whitlock now stands 18-11 for his career with a 3.47 ERA. Opponents own a .287 OBP against him with a .406 slugging percentage. Batters get on base decently against Detmers, but he held opponents to a .397 slugging percentage.

No Dents on Detmers

Reid Detmers of the Angels just completed six no-hit innings against the Rangers. He walked two and struck out five, throwing 76 pitches. The Angels led 1-0 in the Lone Star State on a Shohei Ohtani home run. Stay tuned.

Update: Detmers allows two walks in the inning, but gets two more pop ups and a ground out to keep the no-hitter and the 1-0 shutout intact. He’s over 100 pitches, so it’s unlikely he comes out for the eighth inning.

Detmers was in a very cold streak, allowing 36 hits in his last 25 1/3 innings. That included nine home runs and 13 walks for a 10.30 ERA.

Update: Detmers comes out for the eighth inning.

Update: Marcus Semien doubles with one out in the eighth inning. The Angels still lead 1-0, and Detmers comes out of the game.

Update: The Angels get out of the inning with their lead intact.

Games of the Day

The Yankees send Gerrit Cole against Cardinals starter and former teammate Jordan Montgomery. Cole owns the third highest K rate in the majors since the Yankees acquired him in 2020 (min 350 innings). Note that his BB rate is superior to the two pitchers in front of him, Blake Snell and Shohei Ohtani. Montgomery stands 11-10 with a 3.35 ERA since the trade to the Cardinals last season. He allowed just 15 home runs in 155 2/3 innings.

Zac Gallen goes for his eleventh win as he leads the Diamondbacks against the Angels and Reid Detmers. Gallen’s three true outcomes are all good, but his walks are particularly low, with just 22 issued in 104 1/3 innings. Detmers holds a 3.77 ERA for the second season in a row. His record stands at 1-5 after going 7-6 in 2022. The Angels scored two runs or less in six of his 14 starts. On top of that, Angels relievers own a 5.91 ERA in his starts, blowing three of six save opportunities.

The Sunday night game features the Giants at the Mets, and may be the slugfest of the day. Ross Stripling of the Giants owns a 6.88 ERA and allowed ten home runs in 35 1/3 innings. David Peterson of the Mets comes in with a 7.00 ERA and allowed eight home runs in 45 innings. The Mets offense ranks fourth in the NL with 103 home runs, the Giants fifth with 99 dingers.

Games of the Day

The Yankees and Orioles battle in Baltimore with Nestor Cortes taking on Tyler Wells. Cortes owns a 2.60 ERA since the start of the 2021 season thanks in large part to a 0.99 WHIP. Wells pitched five hitless innings of relief in his first appearance of the season. With a low for the era strikeout rate, Wells limits hits, giving up just 130 in 165 2/3 career innings.

Toronto sends Yusei Kikuchi against the Angels and Reid Detmers. Kikuchi has yet to post a season ERA under 4.00 in his career, as he tends to give up lots of home runs. He allowed just one run in his first start of the season, and than was on a solo homer. Detmers in his career owns odd FIP numbers. His FIP is lower than his ERA, but his xFIP is about the same amount higher than his xFIP (which takes into account the types of balls in play). It seems the average of the two is a better predictor of Detmers’s era.

Finally, Seth Lugo of the Padres faces rookie Dylan Dodd of the Braves on Sunday Night Baseball. Lugo struck out seven with no walks in his first game of the season, allowing one run in seven innings. Dodd also did not walk a batter in his first five MLB innings, and like Lugo allowed just one run.

Games of the Day

The Mets visit the Brewers on opening day in Milwaukee. Carlos Carrasco takes on Freddy Peralta. Last year, Carrasco pitched over 150 innings for the first time since 2018. He walked just 41 batters in those 152 innings. Peralta only appeared in 18 games in 2022 due to a shoulder injury. He allowed just 54 hits in his 78 innings, however.

The Phillies visit the Yankees as they take the long way home after their series in Texas. Taijuan Walker faces Nestor Cortes. Walker cut his home runs allowed from 26 in 2021 to 15 in 2022 in about the same number of innings. That helped pull his ERA down a run, from 4.47 to 3.49. Cortes allowed a .200/.253/.340 slash line over the previous two seasons. Twenty four of the thirty home runs he allowed came with the bases empty.

The Braves send Charlie Morton against the Cardinals and Jake Woodford. Morton is the opposite of Walker. His home runs went up from 16 in 2021 to 28 in 2022, and his ERA jumped one run. Woodford pitched mostly in relief in his career. Last season he allowed just one home run in 48 1/3 innings.

Finally, the Angels and Mariners meet with Reid Detmers and George Kirby battling on the mound. Detmers got hit harder on the road in 2022, allowing a .193/.272/.346 slash line at home, .274/.343/.413 on the road. Kriby posted a great rookie season in 2022, 8-5 with a 3.39 ERA in twenty five starts. He’s just entering his prime this year so we’ll see how much he improves.

Best Batter Today

I’ve been sick all week, and it’s very tough for me to work, so the top five in the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings are Manny Machado, Pete Alonso, Ty France, Paul Goldschmidt, and Freddie Freeman, as first base men dominate the list.

The top game score on Tuesday belonged to Mike Trout of the Angels. He scores an 83 in the 12-0 win, and it’s the rare game where the best pitching game score of the night and the best batting game score of the night occur on the same team. Reid Detmers earned an 88 for his no-hitter.

Detmers No-Hitter

Reid Detmers of the Angles pitches a no-hitter against the Rays in 12-0 trouncing by LAnaheim. Detmers walked a batter and struck out just two. Taylor Walls walked leading off the Rays sixth, but he was eventually doubled off. Another Rays player reached on an error, or Detmers faced just 28 batters.

I would have thought going into the game that Detmers was a poor choice to throw a no-hitter. In his ten previous starts he allowed 44 hits in 42 2/3 innings, with 37 K, 18 walks, and eight home runs allowed. That is not the profile of a good pitcher. His minor league K numbers were very good, however, and last night that appeared to translate into poor contact.

Maybe the Angels have a second ace in the making.
