Laird Smacked

Gerald Laird gets hit with a foul ball and then with a follow through swing in the same bottom of the 8th plate appearance by Corey Dickerson. Laird, wearing the old style mask, appeared to be hit in the side of the jaw by the bat and had to come out of the game. He was on the ground for a while, but walked off the field under his own power. Once the PA resumed, David Carpenter, pitching for the Braves, hit Dickerson with a pitch and was immediately tossed by the umpire. Walt Weiss came out to complain (or yell at Fredi Gonzalez), and Weiss was tossed. The umps then warned the Rockies bench not to come out onto the field. The situation never got out of hand.

I don’t think the Dickerson swing was intentional.

The Rockies lead the Braves 8-3.

Bad Bunt

Why do managers think that players who haven’t bunted all year can suddenly bunt in the post season? Gerald Laird recorded one sacrifice hit in 2012, and just lined out trying to bunt. He does, however, have a history of bunting well, recording 10 SH in 2009.

Update: Brandon Crawford makes a nice defensive play on a ball that hits Matt Cain, and the Tigers don’t score in the fifth. Detroit continues to lead San Francisco 2-1.

By the way, I now know why they call the drink a Kamikaze. 🙂

Well Timed Triple

Gerald Laird saved his eighth career triple for the top of the ninth as he drives in the winning run in the Cardinals 3-2 win over the Braves, pitching duel of the day. Laird isn’t playing much or hitting much this season, but four of his seven hits have gone for extra bases.

While Brandon Beachy out-pitched Jake Westbrook as a starter, the Cardinals bullpen came through, allowing one hit and two walks in three innings of work for the win and the save. Fernando Salas earned his second save in as many opportunities, lowering his ERA to 0.96, and now has ten strikeouts in 9 1/3 innings.

The Best Laird Plans

Gerald Laird hit Detroit’s fifth home run of the game in the 13th inning, and Jose Valverde held the Twins scoreless in his second chance to protect a lead and Detroit takes the game 10-9 in 13 innings. Valverde came into the game in the 11th after the Tigers took a 9-8 lead in the top of the inning, only to walk Denard Span leading off the inning. He came around to score as the Tigers botched two double play grounders, one for an error.

Detroit collected 19 hits, eight for extra bases, while all 15 of the Twins hits went for singles. All five of the Tigers home runs were solo shots. Laird’s home run raised his slugging percentage to .299.

The Twins lead Chicago by 3 1/2 games as they welcome the Rangers to town.
