The Argument

The Blue Jays win the American League pennant with a tense, 4-3 victory of the Mariners in game seven of the ALCS. The series turned out to be one of the rare times a team loses the first two games at home but still wins the series. Toronto outscored Seattle 37-30.

The two offenses operate differently. Seattle swings for the fences, willing to strike out to maximize home runs. The power threat also leads to more walks. Toronto makes contact. They strikeout less, homer less, and walk less, but collect more hits. That’s exactly as the series shook out. The Mariners won the home run and walk column, while the Blue Jays struck out 31 fewer times, collecting 15 more hits. Note that the Blue Jays did not lack power. They collected fourteen doubles to the Mariners five, outslugging Seattle .475 to .440.

That’s an important point. The quality of contact matters. The Blue Jays didn’t just dump singles over the heads of infielders. They hit screamers all over the park. They were fun to watch.

Note that in the NLCS, the other side won the argument. Dodgers pitchers found a way to miss the bats of a ball in play team, and turned their strength into a weakness. Their home run power made their scoring more efficient, and they won low scoring games.

The sides are one and one going into the World Series, and we’ll see which side wins the ultimate argument.

Springing Into Action

George Springer comes to the play in the bottom of the seventh inning with men on second and third and one out. Eduard Bazardo had just come on in relief of Bryan Woo. Springer gets all of a 1-0 pitch and deposits the ball in the leftfield stands to give the Blue Jays a 4-3 lead over the Mariners.

Update: The next two batters hit two hard singles, and Bazardo does not have anything tonight.

Update: Sorry, the second single was a rocket line out. It just looked like a hit as I typed. Bazardo gets out of the inning without allowing another run.

Mariners Strike First

Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners leads off game seven of the ALCS with a double, and one out later, Josh Naylor knocks Rodriguez in with a single to rightfield. Naylor is now hittting .356 on the post season, and the Mariners lead the Blue Jays 1-0.

Update: Josh Naylor prevents a double play by turning his back and jumping into the throw. The umpires are discussing the call.

Update: The umpires decided it was interference and the out if called at first base. The Mariners get just one run.

Seven for the 77s

Toronto defeats the Mariners 6-2 to force a game seven in the ALCS. The Blue Jays put the ball in play, striking out just six times. Seattle made three errors along the way, while the Toronto got out of tough situations three innings in a row with double plays.

The teams play for the trip to the World Series Monday night at 8 PM EDt.

Off the Glove

Two balls go off the gloves of Mariners fielders to start the bottom of the second inning. Daulton Varsho hits a single to centerfield, but Julio Rodriguez has the ball go off his glove for a one base error. The Ernie Clement hits a hot shot to Eugenio Suarez at third base. He looks back the runner at second, not realizing he dropped the ball. His throw to first is late.

Addison Barger follows with a single to rightfield, and the Blue Jays take a 1-0 lead. The Isiah Kiner-Falefa hits a soft grounder to third that can’t be fielded and the Blue Jays lead 2-0.

Update: Suarez redeems himself by stopping a ground shot by Vladimir Guerrero Jr with the bases loaded to end the inning.

Playoffs Today

The Mariners play the first of two match points Sunday night as they visit the Blue Jays in game six of the ALCS. This series reminds me of the 1986 World Series, where the Red Sox surprised the Mets by winning the first two games at Shea Stadium. New York won games three and four in Boston, with the Red Sox coming back for a win in game five. Even the closeness of the games are similar. Mariners fans need to hope that the similarities end there.

Logan Gilbert takes the mound for Seattle against Trey Yesavage. Gilbert makes his fourth appearance and third start of the 2025 post season, and so far pitched very well, just not very much. He struck out eleven in his eleven innings of work, allowing two walks and no home runs. Opponents did collect 12 hits, but 10 of those went for singles. The Mariners likely will remove him from the game before he can get in trouble.

Yesavage failed to repeat his fantastic start against the Yankees, the Mariners knocking him around for five runs in four innings. Yesavage can be wild, as he walked seven batters in his 14 regular season innings. The Mariners took advantage of that in game two of the series as they went on to blow out Toronto.

Enjoy!

Dodgers Win the Pennant

The Dodgers sweep the Brewers with a 5-1 win Friday night and repeat as National League Champions. Shohei Ohtani goes three for three with three home runs and a walk for a perfect night at the pate. He pitched six innings, giving up two hits, three walks, and no runs. He struck out ten. The broadcast is touting it as the greatest performance by a player in a game, and it’s tough to argue with that.

The Dodgers are now 9-1 in this post season, and they get six days off before the start of the World Series next Friday. They held the Brewers to just one run in each of the four games.

Bad Baseball

Blake Perkins of the Brewers found himself on first base with one out in the top of the third inning after a walk. Brice Turang hit a sinking liner to rightfield, and it’s caught by Enrique Hernandez. Perkins was running on the play and doesn’t pick up that the ball could be caught, and can’t get back to first in time as he gets thrown out from right.

The Dodgers lead 3-0 as everything in this series keeps going wrong for Milwaukee.

Mariners Win

The Mariners defeat the Blue Jays 6-2 in game five of the ALCS. The game stayed close until the eighth inning. The Blue Jays put twelve men on base with hits, walks, and an HBP. They were just two for eleven with runners in scoring position, the Mariners turning two impressive double plays. Five of the twelve Mariners who reached base did so in the eighth inning, two home runs sandwiching two walks and a hit batter. The grand slam by Eugenio Suarez was Seattle’s only hit with runners in scoring position, but it did a ton of damage.

The teams play game six in Toronto on Sunday.

Mariners Loaded

After Cal Raleigh‘s home run, the Mariners load the bases on two walks and a hit by pitch. With no outs in the bottom of the eighth, Seattle has a golden opportunity to take the lead.

Update: Eugenio Suarez hits the ball far the other way for his second homer of the game, a grand slam, and the Mariners take a 6-2 lead over the Blue Jays in the eighth inning. Still no one out.

Kirk in High Gear

Bryan Woo makes his 2025 post-season debut for the Mariners in the top of the sixth. Alejandro Kirk of the Blue Jays leads off with a double, and with one out, Ernie Clement singles to rightfield. Kirk tries to score on the play. Dominic Canzone seemed to rush the throw and it went up the third base line, allowing Kirk to score. He aggressive play gives the Blue Jays 2-1 lead. The throw was a negative mark on an otherwise good defensive game for Seattle.

Brash Move

After a leadoff single in the top of the fifth, Mariners manager Dan Wilson brings in setup man Matt Brash. He gets two outs, then gives up a game tying double to George Springer of the Blue Jays.

The announcers didn’t understand the move, and it may have worked if Wilson was trying to prevent a big inning.

The Blue Jays and Mariners are tied at one in the bottom of the fifth inning.

October 17, 2025

Bases Loaded Work

The Blue Jays load the bases against the Mariners with no one out in the top of the fourth inning. Bryce Miller then strikes out Daulton Varsho on five pitches. Ernie Clement comes up and taps the ball right in front of home plate. It’s rolling back towards catcher Cal Raleigh, but he lunges forward, grabs the still fair ball with his knee on the plate, and fires to first for the double play.

The Seattle defense played very well so far tonight. They’ve been positioned well and turned two very nice double plays.

October 17, 2025 October 17, 2025

Suarez Swings

The Mariners break on top as Eugenio Suarez homers with one out in the bottom of the second to put the team up 1-0 on the Blue Jays. For Suarez, it was his third home run of the post-season, but his first against the Blue Jays. He collected one hit in each of the five games now, including a double and the homer.

Playoffs Today

The Blue Jays and the Mariners play their game five early as they travel back to Toronto after the contest, the winner only needing one win to capture the American League Pennant. Kevin Gausman faces Bryce Miller. Gausman went 5 2/3 innings in each of his two post-season starts in 2025. He only struck out eight batters, but he still limited batters to just seven hits in those 11 1/3 innings, good for a 2.38 ERA. Miller opposed Gausman in game one of this series, and allowed one run in six innings. Like Guasman, he limited hits without a lot of Ks this post-season, with three K and six hits allowed in 10 1/3 innings.

The Brewers still have not named a starter for game four the first elimination game of the LCS round. All three of the games against the Dodgers were winnable, as Los Angeles scored a total of 10 runs. Most of the damage comes early, as the openers and starters allowed a .259/.355/.667 slash line, with with six of the seven hits allowed going for extra bases. That’s in 31 BFP. The relievers allowed a high OBP, but not the power. Note that Dodgers starters faced 79 batters, striking out 25 of them, and allowing a .093/.139/.160 slash line. It’s as if the Brewers lineup were all poor hitting pitchers from the pre-DH days.

Shohei Ohtani takes the mound for Los Angeles. He went six strong innings in his start against the Phillies, walking one and striking out nine.

Enjoy!
