Third Not a Charm

Max Scherzer takes the Blue Jays three-run lead into the bottom of the third inning and runs into trouble, too. He loads the bases on a double, single, and walk, the latter coming with one out. Teoscar Hernandez hits a line drive to centerfield, and Daulton Varsho makes a shoestring catch to hold it to a sacrifice fly. Then Tommy Edman hits a hard line drive down the first base line, and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. snags it for the third out. Scherzer gets saved by his defense and Toronto leads Los Angeles 3-1.

We’ll see if Scherzer comes out for the fourth inning.

A Ball to the Head

With men on first and second and nobody out, a two-strike pitch gets away from Blake Snell and hit Daulton Varsho in the head to load the bases after a long plate appearance. That’s all for Snell as he leaves the game after pitching five innings plus three batters in the sixth. The Blue Jays got the Dodgers bullpen in the game early, which should work to Toronto’s advantage.

The Dodgers and Blue Jays are tied at two in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Update: Ernie Clement hits the second pitch he sees for a single up the middle, and the Blue Jays lead 3-2.

Update: Nathan Lukes pinch hits, falls behind 0-2, then draws a walk to drive in another run.

Update: Andres Gimenez singles for another Blue Jays run. They are going one base at a time. Emmet Sheehan, in relief, has allowed all his inherited runners to score.

Update: Now that the runs belong to him, Sheehan gets a ground ball for a force at the plate for the first out.

Update: The Dodgers bring in Anthony Banda, the Blue Jays counter with pinch hitter Addison Barger, and Barger delivers a grand slam! The Blue Jays lead the Dodgers 9-2.

Update: Isiah Kiner-Falefa bats without a position, as he pinch ran earlier in the inning. He flies out, but Alejandro Kirk homers to push the lead to 11-2.

Update: The inning finally ends on a fly out, a great demonstration of why the Dodgers let their starters go deep. According to the broadcast, the Barger homer was the first pinch hit grand slam in World Series history.

Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees stayed atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings with a two for three with two walks in a 13-7 Toronto win that puts New York’s back to the wall. Second place George Springer of the Blue Jays posted a two for four with a walk, double and home run. His teammate Daulton Varsho collected two doubles and two home runs for a game score of 90, the highest on the day. It’s only the 14th game score of 90 in the post-season since 1920. It’s unlikely there were any 90s before 1920, as home runs were rare. It’s the first 90+ in the post season since Chris Taylor of the Dodgers posted a 94 on 10/21/21. It’s also the 26th 90+ of 2025.

Cal Raleigh and Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners remain third and fourth respectively after a 3-2 win over the Tigers evens their series. Both went one for four with a double, the two-baggers coming back to back to score the winning run in the game.

Juan Soto of the Mets remained in fifth place. Brice Turang of the Brewers and Michael Busch of the Cubs rank seventh and eighth, and could catch Soto with good games Monday night.

Long Hits

The Blue Jays get a double by Daulton Varsho leading off the bottom of the second, and he winds up on third as Aaron Judge of the Yankees misplayed the ball. It didn’t matter as Ernie Clement homered on the next pitch to give Toronto an early 2-0 lead.

Trey Yesavage got four of his first six outs on the K.

Just Extras

Daulton Varsho of the Blue Jays collected three hits in the 2-1 win over the Rangers Monday afternoon. Two of the hits went for extra bases, a double and a home run. It was the single that was unusual for Varsho this season, as his slash line stands at .218/.238/.603. Thirteen of his seventeen hits, four doubles, a triple and eight home runs, went for extra bases. He should open a store.

The power is great, but it’s coming at a high cost in outs.

Triple Tear

Daulton Varsho of the Blue Jays drove in the team’s first run of the evening with his third triple of the season. That matches his career single season high, reached in both 2022 and 2023. He also hit all three in his last ten games. He only collected nine hits so far, but six of them went for extra bases.

The Orioles lead the game 2-1 in the bottom of the third inning.

Relative Trade

The Blue Jays break up their group of young legacies with a trade of Lourdes Gurriel, Jr., but replace him with another:

The Toronto Blue Jays have reached a deal to acquire outfielder Daulton Varsho from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and catching prospect Gabriel Moreno, sources told ESPN’s Jeff Passan on Friday.

ESPN.com

Varsho is the son of Gary Varsho. He showed home run power in 2022, but remained an out machine with a .302 OBP, 306 for his career. The Blue Jays will control him for two additional year compare to Gurriel, and he gives Toronto a left-handed bat. Varsho’s inability to get on base extends to his time in the minors. He does give Toronto some roster flexibility, as he can catch.

Moreno does get on base, with high numbers in both the minors and his cup of coffee in the majors. He appears to be fast as well, with nine triples in 1069 minor league plate appearances. He also went 22 for 31 attempting to steal.

Off-hand, this looks like a very good deal for the Diamondbacks.

Best Batter Today

Juan Soto of the Nationals has a rare poor day at the plate but stays atop the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Soto goes 0 for 4 with a walk to see his lead shrink to nine and half points. The Brewers take the game 7-3. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals sits in second place as he singles and homers in a 3-0 win over the Pirates.

Brandon Lowe of the Rays matches Soto’s walk in five plate appearances and sits in third place as the Rays shutout the White Sox 9-0. The White Sox are now five games behind the Rays with the fourth best record in the AL.

Ty France of the Mariners moves back into the top five with a single and a home run in a 6-3, eleven inning win over the Astros. The Astros are 3 1/2 games behind the Rays for home field advantage. Freddie Freeman of the Braves rounds out the top five as he collects a double in a 3-1 win over the Orioles.

The highest game score of the day belongs to Daulton Varsho of the Diamondbacks. He misses the cycle by a single, drawing a walk for his one-base event, and that three for four day is good for an 82. The seasonal age 24 catcher is having a good season at the plate. His low .238 BA hides his .344 OBP and his .456 slugging percentage.
