Montoyo Removed

The Blue Jays parted ways with manager Charlie Montoyo Wednesday afternoon:

The 13th manager in Blue Jays history, and the first from Puerto Rico, Montoyo went 236-236 in parts of four seasons. Toronto beat Philadelphia on Tuesday to snap a four-game losing streak and improve to 46-42 this season, which would put them in a playoffs as a wild-card team if the season ended now despite being in fourth place in the AL East.

The Blue Jays are 3-9 in July. They went 1-6 on a road trip against Oakland, which has the worst record in the majors, and Seattle that ended Sunday with a four-game sweep against the Mariners.

John Schneider was promoted from AAA to be the interim manager.

The Blue Jays finished eight games below their Pythagorean projection in 2021. The were one game over this season, but this was a very young, talented team that was expected to compete for the division title. It’s possible that Montoyo was the man to develop the young talent, but not the man to take it to the next level. The Twins needed Tom Kelly to take their young talent to the World Series in the 1980s. The Jays may need someone similar.

Correction: John Schneider was named interim manager. Casey Candaele was promoted to bench coach.

AL Manager of the Year

The BBWAA presents the Manager of the Year award for the American League for 2020 to Kevin Cash of the Tampa Bay Rays. Cash garnered twenty two first place votes and 126 points. Rick Renteria, former manager of the White Sox finished second with five first place votes and 61 points. Charlie Montoyo of the Blue Jays finished third with 47 points. Bob Melvin also received a first place vote.

Cash owns a .522 winning percentage as a manager, finishing with at least 90 wins in his last three seasons, after finish below .500 his first three years with the Rays. The Rays finished with the best record in AL, and as we saw in the playoffs, the Cash and the Rays will buck tradition to try to create the best opportunities to win, even if it sometimes doesn’t work.

From Rays to Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays hired Tampa Bay Rays bench coach Charlie Montoyo as the Jays new manager:

The 53-year-old Montoyo, from Puerto Rico, managed the triple-A Durham Bulls from 2007-14 and spent three seasons as Tampa Bay’s third-base coach before becoming bench coach this year.

“We are thrilled to announce Charlie as the new manager of the Toronto Blue Jays,” general manager Ross Atkins said in a statement. “Charlie is a highly regarded leader by so many individuals in the game and we were thoroughly impressed by his experiences and approach as we learned more about him during the interview process.”

Montoyo becomes the 13th manager in Blue Jays history. He will be responsible for the development of top prospect Vladimir Guerrero Jr., who is expected to join the Blue Jays in April.

Before joining the parent club, Montoyo spent 18 seasons managing in the Rays’ minor league system. He won seven International League South Division titles and two Governors’ Cup championships (2009, 2013) with Durham. He also worked with the Puerto Rican team at the 2009 World Baseball Classic.

Unlike a number of recent first-time MLB managers, Montoyo has extensive managerial experience at the minor league level. Sometimes teams need a manager that fits their stage of development, and as the Jays rebuild, someone used to working with younger players is probably the right choice. He also comes from an innovative organization in Tampa Bay at a moment in baseball history where innovation is celebrated. The seems like a very good move for Toronto.
