Another One Bites the Dust

Another pitcher heads for Tommy John surgery:

Right-hander Felipe Paulino could be the fourth Royals pitchers to have Tommy John surgery this year.

Team doctors have diagnosed Paulino with a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, which usually leads to reconstructive elbow surgery. He will get a second opinion from Dr. Lewis Yocum, a specialist in the field.

Earlier this year the Royals lost closer Joakim Soria, starter Danny Duffy and reliever Blake Wood to Tommy John surgery. Typical recovery time is 10-14 months.

Paulino was off to a good start for Kansas City, with a 1.67 ERA in seven starts. Paulino seemed to be making up for all the bad luck during his career this season. His career FIP stands at 4.09, versus a 4.93 career ERA. This season, his FIP dropped to 3.21, and his ERA was about 1/2 of that. With Brandon Beachy undergoing the procedure yesterday, we lost two low ERA pitchers in a matter of days.

Paulino Hurt

Felipe Paulino, easily the Royals best starter this season, left Wednesday’s game early with a groin pull.

Bad news for Hochevar haters: The Royals now need Luke more than ever. Wednesday night’s starter, Felipe Paulino, injured his groin — it had nothing to do with the ball that hit him in the thigh — and he’s day to day.

At this point, day to day probably means they don’t know how bad it is. Stay tuned.

Casting a Paulino over the Yankees

The Royals call up Felipe Paulino to make his first start of the season, and he holds the Yankees scoreless for six innings. Paulino allowed four hits and two walks while striking out six in the Royals 5-1 victory.

Felipe’s career to this point was a bit odd. He struck out a high number of batters, but that did not result in fewer hits. For his career, he allows 10.1 hits per nine despite an 8.3 per nine strikeout rate. He is a bit wild, and does allow an above average home run rate, but his career 5.28 ERA just seems out of line. It all worked for him against New York this evening.

For the game, the Yankees went 0 for 9 with runners in scoring position, as four doubles set up plenty of scoring opportunities.

Games of the Day

The Indians try to gain a game back from the Tigers as David Huff faces Doug Fister in Detroit. Huff pitched lights out so far, with 15 K and just four walks in 17 2/3 innings. That includes five shutout innings against the Red Sox. Fister has been a disappointment so far for the Tigers. With his low K rate and the Tigers poor defense, Doug allowed 24 hits in 14 2/3 innings so far for Detroit.

Roy Oswalt takes on John Lannan in a nice pitching matchup as the Phillies face the Nationals. The season will be the first that Oswalt fails to reach 30 games since 2003. His strike out rate suffered this season, and tha allowed his BA against to rise. Lannan allowed just 3 of his 11 home runs at home this season leading to an ERA about one and a half runs lower than on the road.

Tim Wakefield takes another shot at 200 wins as the Red Sox battle Felipe Paulino and the Royals. Given the Red Sox offense, Wakefield pitched well enough to win the first four starts he made to try to reach the milestone. A 4.08 ERA over that time should have produced one win. Paulino pitched well since coming over from the Rockies. With 75 K and 28 BB in 83 2/3 innings, the Royals have to be happy with his performance. He just hasn’t gotten the support, as he is 1-5 with the team.

Enjoy!

Junk Trade

The Rockies traded a poor hitter for a poor pitcher.

Rockies have traded barmes to astros for p paulino

Believe it or not, the Rockies do get the better of this trade. Clint Barmes doesn’t do anything well offensively at this point and is past his prime. Felipe Paulino is five years younger, and at least strikes out batters at a high rate. If the Rockies staff can teach him control, he might be of use to them.

Paulino Gets a Win

Felipe Paulino pitched decently this season, but always ended up in the loss column. He pitched great against the Cubs tonight, allowing just one run over eight innings, walking two and striking out seven. This season, his strikeout and home run rates are excellent, and tonight he added a good walk rate, and Houston picked up a 3-1 win. That ruined the return to the rotation of Carlos Zambrano, who lasted just 4 1/3 innings, giving up all three Houston runs.

Games of the Day

It’s the defeated against the undefeated as 0-7 Felipe Paulino and the Astros face the 4-0 Mike Leake and the Reds. Paulino’s strikeout and home run numbers are excellent, which is why he keeps getting the ball with a 5.07 ERA. He walks to many, leading to a .358 opposition OBP. Combined that with 13 or the 17 extra base hits against him came with men on base, the high ERA becomes more understandable. Leake doesn’t have quite as good K numbers, but his walk and home run numbers are excellent, and most of the extra base hits against him come with the bases empty.

Marlins killer Jamie Moyer takes the mound against Anibal Sanchez in Florida. Jamie is 13-5 with a 3.18 ERA against Florida in his career, but lost his last three starts to the Fish. After three years of fighting injuries, Sanchez is returning to his rookie form, with the added benefit of fewer home runs allowed. He comes in with six quality starts in his last seven games.

Lefites battle in Boston as Bruce Chen and the Royals face Jon Lester. Chen makes his first start of year after posting a 2.89 ERA in the bullpen. That seems low, given his eight walks in 9 1/3 innings. Lester earned his 3.15 ERA, holding opponents to a .292 OBP and a .310 slugging percentage.

Finally, in a game that promises to keep the defense on their toes, Livan Hernandez tosses against Jon Garland as the Nationals battle the Padres. Livan struck out just 23 in 60 2/3 innings, but holds opponents to a .211 BA. Garland’s a bit better, with 38 K in 60 innings with opponents hitting .235 against him. The two allowed the same number of earned runs, so this could be the pitchers duel of the day, especially playing in PETCO Park.

Enjoy!

Wolfing Down Batters

Randy Wolf continues the theme of well pitched wins with seven shutout innings as the Brewers defeat the Astros 6-1. Felipe Paulino didn’t pitch badly, as he allowed two runs over six innings, but like Kawakami, he falls to 0-7. Given the quality of the Astros this year, I would not be surprised if Paulino actually lost 20.

Wolf only allowed four hits on 20 balls in play. The Astros, with the lowest line drive percentage in the NL, just are not putting good wood on the ball this year.
