Campbell Passes

Former pitcher Mike Campbell died Monday at age 61. A West Seattle native, the Mariners drafted him in 1985, and he became part of one of the biggest trades in Mariners history:

The right-hander made his major-league debut in 1987 and pitched with the Mariners during parts of the 1987, ’88 and ’89 seasons before being traded to the Montreal Expos as part of the deal in which Seattle acquired Hall of Famer Randy Johnson.

Campbell had a 13-year professional career, including appearing in the majors with Seattle, Texas, San Diego and the Chicago Cubs.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Campbell pitched well in the minors, with little success in the majors. His biggest MLB stint came in 1988 when he made twenty starts for the Mariners with a 5.89 ERA. He only struck out 4.9 batters per nine innings, leading to 128 hits in 114 2/3 innings, 18 of those home runs.
