The Yankees traded four young hitting prospects to the Marlins for starting pitcher Ryan Weathers:
Miami is receiving outfielder Brendan Jones, outfielder Dillon Lewis, infielder Dylan Jasso and infielder Juan Matheus in the trade.
…
Weathers is the son of 19-year big league veteran David Weathers, who pitched for the Yankees for parts of two seasons from 1996-97, including 11 strong postseason innings that helped the ’96 team win the franchise’s first championship since 1978.
The Yankees will be down starters at the beginning of the season due to surgical recoveries, and Weathers will try to fill that gap. He plays 2026 as a 26 year old, so he is still in his early prime. His high in innings, 94 2/3 IP, came in his rookie season of 2021. Injuries limited his time on the mound over the seasons.
He did improve the last two years, upping his K rate, lowering his walk rate, and posting BABIPS of .275 and .276. The projections at FanGraphs put his innings in the low 140s with an fWAR of about 2.0. If the Yankees get that, he will be a great pickup. Opposition batting Musings Marcels put him at 55 innings with a .250/.318/.415 slash line allowed.
None of the prospects going to the Marlins showed much power in their brief minor league careers. Jones and Matheus do a great job of getting on base, however, so they could potentially give the Marlins and outfielder and infielder who could function at the top of the order.
