The Unusual Leader

Coming into today’s games, Shohei Ohtani leads the majors in home runs and is tied for the lead in triples. If that holds up for the season, it would be the second time Ohtani lead the majors in those two categories, having accomplished the feat in 2021. In the home run era, starting in 1920, only three other seasons saw a player lead in both categories. Jim Rice accomplished it in 1978 with 46 home runs and 15 triples, Ernie Banks slugged like that in 1958 with 47 homers and eleven triples. Finally, Willie Mays slugged 51 home runs and legged out 13 triples in 1955.

That’s an incredibly elite group, and Ohtani may be the first hitter to do it twice in this era.
