Doubles and Triples

The Orioles beat the visiting Diamondbacks 5-4 in eleven innings. The box score showed Kevin Newman of Arizona and Ryan Mountcastle of Baltimore each hit a double and a triple in the game. I wondered how unusual this is. The Day by Day Database goes back to 1920, and in that time, this was the 601st game with at least two players having a double and a triple. It was also the third this season. In that same time frame, at least three players accomplish this in the same game 20 times.

One of those games was above three. On May 16, 1921, Washington visited Detroit, the Tigers taking the game 17-11. Five hitters in that game hit both a double and a triple, including Ty Cobb. Chick Shorten and Bert Cole joined Cobb on the Detroit side, while Duffy Lewis and Joe Judge delivered for Washington.

Best Batter Today

There is a French connection to the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings today. Juan Soto of the Nationals remains at the top of the list as he doubles in four trips. The Braves take the game in a blowout, however, 12-2. Matt Olson stands in second place as he is part of a five home run Oakland attack. Olson also singles as the As beat the Rangers 8-3.

Jesse Winker and Joey Votto of the Reds stand three and four respectively, separated by half a point after the Phillies take a 6-1 victory. Winker once again sat out the game with an injury, while Votto drew a walk as the Reds managed just three hits on the day.

Ty France of the Mariners moves into the top five for the first time. He goes two for three with a walk, the hits going long as a triple and a home run. The Mariners beat the Blue Jays nine to three. France is in his third season in the majors, and his strength is getting on base. He’s shown more power in his last 25 games, however, and that helped propel him into the top of the ratings.

Dansby Swanson of the Braves posts a game score of 81 in the win over the Nationals. He goes three for five with two home runs and six RBI, half of the Braves run out put for the game. That beats out Kevin Newman of the Pirates who knocked out four doubles in four at bats in game one of a doubleheader against the Brewers. That ties a record held by many for most doubles in a game.

Beat the Streak Picks

For the past two years Baseball Musings tried to help with playing Beat the Streak. The Day by Day Database keeps track of hit streak of at least five games. In addition, two programs produce top ten lists of players with a high probability of a hit. If you find this useful, please support Baseball Musings with a donation.

Here are the top picks my programs produced for use in Beat the Streak. This post mostly explains the ideas behind the calculations. In addition, this post shows tests on the Neural Network (NN). This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

First, the Log5 Method picks:

Victor Reyes is not a great offensive player, but he is great at getting hits. His high BABIP, .383, makes up for his high strikeout rate. Note that he posted high BABIPs in the minors as well. As Detroit rebuilds, he’ll be a very good number six hitter, the kind you want to get a hit at the end of an offensive sequence.

Here are the neural network picks:

  • 0.310, 0.739 — Tim Anderson batting against Spencer Turnbull.
  • 0.314, 0.738 — Kevin Newman batting against Tyler Mahle.
  • 0.313, 0.738 — Whit Merrifield batting against Martin Perez.
  • 0.311, 0.736 — Bryan Reynolds batting against Tyler Mahle.
  • 0.313, 0.735 — Luis Arraez batting against Jorge Lopez.
  • 0.308, 0.733 — Michael Brantley batting against Dillon Peters.
  • 0.305, 0.732 — Jose Altuve batting against Dillon Peters.
  • 0.260, 0.731 — Howie Kendrick batting against Michael Clevinger.
  • 0.290, 0.731 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Lance Lynn.
  • 0.287, 0.728 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Adrian Houser.

It’s the last day of the season, so I expect a number of players to get a day off, especially those on playoff teams. All the games start at 3 PM EDT, so watch the lineups today.

Newman is the consensus first pick, Merrifield the consensus second pick.

I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!

First, the Log5 Method picks:

There is a light schedule of games today, and things look good for hitters on the Pirates and the Twins.

Here are the neural network picks:

  • 0.333, 0.753 — Kevin Newman batting against Yusei Kikuchi.
  • 0.340, 0.751 — Luis Arraez batting against Michael Montgomery.
  • 0.329, 0.749 — Bryan Reynolds batting against Yusei Kikuchi.
  • 0.296, 0.737 — Hanser Alberto batting against Anthony Kay.
  • 0.294, 0.736 — Giovanny Urshela batting against Andrew Heaney.
  • 0.291, 0.730 — DJ LeMahieu batting against Andrew Heaney.
  • 0.312, 0.725 — Starling Marte batting against Yusei Kikuchi.
  • 0.311, 0.723 — Eddie Rosario batting against Michael Montgomery.
  • 0.292, 0.721 — Whit Merrifield batting against Kyle Gibson.
  • 0.311, 0.719 — Jorge Polanco batting against Michael Montgomery.
  • 0.310, 0.719 — Bo Bichette batting against Gabriel Ynoa.

Newman beats Arraez here due to his greater playing time, as his statistics see less regression toward the mean.

I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!

This post discusses an NN that includes the ballpark. I updated the models, and the results of those tests are here.

First, the Log5 Method picks:

Newman owns the longest current hit streak, while LeMahieu is second at 13 games. Both are hot over the streak, with great slash lines.

Here are the neural network picks:

  • 0.328, 0.759 — Jeff McNeil batting against Max Fried.
  • 0.327, 0.756 — Howie Kendrick batting against Jordan Zimmermann.
  • 0.310, 0.739 — David LeMahieu batting against Eduardo Rodriguez.
  • 0.330, 0.738 — Bryan Reynolds batting against Zach Davies.
  • 0.316, 0.738 — Michael Brantley batting against Marco Gonzales.
  • 0.318, 0.732 — Melky Cabrera batting against Zach Davies.
  • 0.270, 0.726 — Charlie Blackmon batting against Kenta Maeda.
  • 0.319, 0.725 — Kevin Newman batting against Zach Davies.
  • 0.307, 0.723 — Javier Baez batting against Anthony DeSclafani.
  • 0.297, 0.717 — Corey Dickerson batting against Zach Davies.
  • 0.298, 0.717 — Anthony Rendon batting against Jordan Zimmermann.

McNeil tops the NN list, and is the consensus first pick. Kendrick and Reynolds are tied for the consensus second pick. McNeil is three for five against Fried, but don’t take that low sample size too seriously.

I do not guarantee results. Your best pick is going to have about a 25% chance of not getting a hit. Good luck!
