Games of the Day

The Braves continue their series in Philadelphia with Max Fried taking on Zach Wheeler. Fried makes his 13th start of the season, missing most of 2023 with an injury. With a 2.70 ERA, he makes the Braves stronger going into the playoffs. In a season with a high home run rate, Fried allowed just five dingers in 66 2/3 innings. Wheeler threw eight shutout innings against the Braves in his one start against them this year, walking one and striking out 12.

The Rangers try to make it two in a row against the Blue Jays in the AL Wild Card chase. Max Scherzer takes on Hyun Jin Ryu in a battle of veterans. In terms of opposition batting, Scherzer pitched well for the Rangers, limiting opponents to a .175/.253/.315 slash line. He gave up power with men on base, however, which led to a 3.63 ERA with the team. Ryu owns a 2.65 ERA in seven starts, walking just eight batters in 34 innings.

Finally, old St. Louis teammates Michael Wacha and Lance Lynn square off as the Padres play the Dodgers. In their five seasons together, they were part of a rather impressive group. The Cardinals developed great pitchers and kept them around.

Games of the Day

Two early games make the list today. Cleveland faces Toronto at 3 PM EDT with Logan Allen battling Hyun Jin Ryu. Allen continues to work on a fine rookie season. His three-true outcomes are all good for a seasonal age 24 pitcher, and he is especially good on the road with a 4-2 record and 2.85 ERA. Ryu makes his fifth start of the season, and owns a 1.89 ERA in 19 innings. He allowed just one home run so far.

The Braves at the Giants features Max Fried against opener Ryan Walker. Since return from the illjured list, Fried is 2-0 with a 3.74 ERA in four starts. He walked just three batters in 21 2/3 innings. The Braves big lead in the NL East allows them to be patient as Fried works his way back to full form. Walker pitched sixteen innings in ten starts, and does a better job of blowing away batters than as a reliever, striking out 25 as a starter.

Ryu Reinjured

Hyun Jin Ryu of the Blue Jays pitched four no-hit innings against the Guardians, but comes out of the game after taking a ball off his knee. He was making his second start since coming off the illjured list due to Tommy John surgery. He’s hoping the latest isn’t serious.

There’s no score as the Guardians bat in the bottom of the fifth.

Update: Jay Jackson comes on in relief and gives up an infield single with two outs.
