Russell’s Transgressions

Via the Chicago-Sun Times, Melisa Reidy tells details the abuse inflicted by Addison Russell. This struck me from early in their relationship, before the abuse started:

“He was never loyal,” Reidy says. Russell was sleeping with someone else from the beginning of their relationship, which resulted in an unintentional pregnancy. When Russell arrived home from Arizona after playing in the Fall League, Reidy found him to be standoffish, and a friend told her she had heard rumors about Addison. A few days later when she was at Russell’s home, she was shocked to see what seemed to be a sonogram sticking out of his bag. “I have nephews, I know what a sonogram looks like,” she says, “I went outside and smoked a cigarette…I went back up there and my heart’s beating out of my chest. I’ve never done that before. I looked and it was a sonogram. I’ll never forget that gut feeling.” After seeing the mother’s name on the sonogram, she looked it up on Facebook. They had one mutual friend, Russell. They’ve since become friendly and developed what Reidy describes as a deep respect for each other as mothers. “We were thrown into a situation with each other that was not truthful. We were both played,” Reidy says of the connection she has with Mallory. “To make her feel like he wanted to be with her…get somebody pregnant, leave them, get a girlfriend, then keep lying…it was very hard for her.”

Russell denied his involvement at first but eventually, Reidy says, he broke down and confessed. “He’s teary-eyed and I’m trying to put myself in his shoes…he’s a twenty-year-old kid. Everybody makes mistakes. Nobody’s perfect. I was like, you know what? You’re gonna be fine…my heart, it hurt for him, seeing him so distressed.” Melisa remembers consoling Russell, and then helping him tell his family later that day.

Expanded Roster

I put very few restrictions on my daughter’s life growing up, but one of the things I told her at a young age was that she could not marry a professional ballplayer. I understand that there are very good men who play the game, but my prior probability for them being faithful to their wives is extremely low. I understand the attraction; their drive to win at all costs makes them successful. If you have a daughter, however, show them this article, talk to them about the warning signs, and don’t let them marry someone like this.

The Russell Allegations

Bleed Cubbie Blue did a good job of following the Addison Russell story, with a link to article by Russell’s ex-wife Melisa about the history of abuse, MLB putting Russell on leave, and the Cubs management reaction to the story.

I’m glad Melisa Reidy is speaking out.

I suspect we will not see Russell in a Cubs uniform for the rest of the year. The Cubs did pick up Daniel Murphy, allowing them to move Javier Baez to shortstop, where he hit much better than Russell. Chicago may suffer defensively in that alignment, but the extra offense is likely worth it. If Baez and Murphy stay healthy through the playoffs, losing Russell should not hurt the team. It’s one advantage of building a team where players have multiple positions.

Russell Accused

Addison Russell is not playing for the Cubs tonight after a third party accusation that Russell abused his wife. Russell’s wife accused him of infidelity. Russell has denied the abuse charge.

As Epstein said, Russell has not been suspended from the team at this time, but the front office did feel it was best for him to stay away today. Also, Epstein said there is not technically a formal investigation by MLB at this time, though I’ll admit that I don’t have a great sense of clarity on the distinction between a formal investigation, and whatever it is that MLB has already confirmed it is doing – “looking into” the situation.

Russell issued this statement:

Russell issued a statement Thursday that said: “Any allegation I have abused my wife is false and hurtful. For the well-being of my family, I’ll have no further comment.”

Spokesman Patrick Courtney says MLB is looking into the situation. Chicago Police Department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi says the department “does not have any current investigation” into Russell or allegations of domestic violence.

We will see how this plays out. It would appear that he at least abused his relationship with his wife.

Where Do the Cubs Improve?

During the Braves run of participating in 14 consecutive post seasons,* Atlanta kept the team strong by identifying a weak link on the team and improving that one position. They bring up Chipper Jones or David Justice. They sign Greg Maddux. They trade for Fred McGriff. They did a great job of pushing out a weak player for a better player.

*Not counting the strike year of 1994

It was not enough for the Cubs to break their World Series jinx, they are in a position to dominate the league for many years. When a team wins, it is easy to stand pat and let that group play on. By staying ahead of weaknesses, a team like the Cubs can prevent a regression back to second or third place in the division.

On offense, the weak links were shortstop and rightfield. Addison Russell is still very young, however, and his defense more than makes up for his bat at this point. Jason Heyward hit poorly in rightfield, but played great defense. He’s also signed to a long-term contract and is in the middle of his prime. The Cubs will give him another year to straighten out, as 2016 could have been a fluke. Heyward plays 2017 as a 27-year-old, a great age for a peak season. Kyle Schwarber returning could give the Cubs an offensive/defensive platoon in the outfield in a worst case scenario.

The Cubs may already have made the move to improve by letting Jason Hammel go to free agency. He would play 2017 as a 34-year-old, so he is well past his prime. While he pitched well in 2016, he was the worst of the five regular starters. Bringing in someone younger lowers the age of an old rotation. I suspect over the next few years to see lowering the age of that group the main concern of the Cubs front office.

Pulling Kershaw

Addison Russell pulls a Clayton Kershaw slider over the head of Andrew Toles in leftfield and the Cubs lead-off the bottom of the second inning with a double. The Cubs went the other way in the first inning, but they are pulling the ball here in the second. Albert Almora pulled a grounder to third, and Justin Turner made a nice play for the first out. The Cubs lead the Dodgers 2-0.

Update: Kyle Hendricks works the count full. He strikes out looking but made Kershaw throw seven pitches. Two down.

Update: Alex Rodriguez called this correctly in the pre-game show. He said the extra rest would cause Kershaw to throw very fast, but not have the command of the speed. So far, that has been the case.

Update: Dexter Fowler pulls a ball hard on the ground between third and short, driving in Ruseell for the third run of the game. Fowler, however, thought the throw was going through to the plate, and gets caught in a run down to end the inning.

The Cubs went the other way in the first inning and score, the Cubs pulled the ball in the second inning and scored. Kershaw might be out of options.

Keystone Runs

In the top of the sixth, Javier Baez singles and steals second, then with one out, Addison Russell homers to give the Cubs a 3-1 lead over the Dodgers. It’s Russell’s second home run in as many games.

David Ross follows with a double, and the Cubs have another threat.

Update: Joe Blanton gets the last two outs, but he is in line for the loss.

Cubs Wake Up

After being shutout for two games in a row, the Cubs offense came to life in the fourth inning of game four of the NLCS, and the Cubs scored ten runs in three innings to beat the Dodgers 10-2. That even the series at two games each, and there will be a game six in Chicago on Saturday. Two slumping players burst out in the game, Anthony Rizzo and Addison Russell each collecting three hits, each hitting a home run. The two combined to drive in five runs, neither having driven in a run in the 2016 post-season up to that point. The Cubs didn’t change their process, the hits just started to fall.

Russell Out

Addison Russell won’t play in the NLCS:

Russell injured his hamstring stretching a double into a triple in the bottom of the fourth inning Monday night in Game 3 of the NLDS.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said they haven’t decided whether to add a pitcher or player to the roster to take Russell’s spot.

“We’ll continue to work on him,” Maddon said. Hopefully if everything plays properly, we have another opportunity for him to play in another round.

Russell is an okay hitter for a middle infielder, but he is a very good shortstop. Most of his value comes from his glove, so I expect the Cubs defense to suffer a bit with Russell on the bench.

Clobbering Cubs

The Cubs knocked around the Cardinals 9-0 on Monday afternoon, Dexter Fowler helping to chase Lance Lynn in the third inning with a homer and a double in Fowler’s first two plate appearances. That was part of as 12-hit, four-walk attack that allowed Chicago to gain on both the Cardinals and the Pirates in the division. Addison Russell, batting ninth, drove in three runs with a homer. So the two table setters provided the power today. The Cubs are just two games out of the first wild card and home field advantage in that game. With the Pirates loss today, they are just 35-34 on the road, so the Cubs would do well to pass Pittsburgh in the race.

The Strong get Stronger

The Oakland Athletics just took a care of a huge potential weak spot:

The A’s pulled the trigger on the ultimate blockbuster Friday evening, acquiring Cubs starters Jeff Samardzija and Jason Hammel for two first-round Draft picks in Addison Russell and Billy McKinney to kick off the trading season.

Oakland also packaged its best Triple-A starter, Dan Straily, in the deal, as confirmed by MLB.com, and Chicago will also reportedly be receiving another player to be named later.

Neither club has confirmed the trade, which was first reported by FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal, and the A’s aren’t expected to make it official until Saturday.

Oakland allowed the second fewest runs per game in the AL, making the pitching staff look like a strength. They have gotten a lot out of second line pitching, as some of their best starters went down with injuries during the spring. Add Drew Pomeranz to the mix, who performed well, and Oakland was going to be counting on good but not great pitchers like Tommy Milone and Brad Mills, or the still developing Dan Straily.

With Samardzija and Hammel, the Cubs get two front line starters having great years. Now, Jesse Chavez is their #5 starter, and Chavez is having a great season. This trade not only increases the chance of the Athletics going to the play offs, but it increases the chance of home field advantage, and every game in the playoffs being pitched by a potential ace. Oakland is going all-in to win the World Series, and it’s good to see.

The Cubs, of course, restock their system. Straily owns great minor league numbers, but hasn’t performed at the MLB level yet. Russell is tearing up the minor leagues with his bat, and plays short. McKinny is a 19-year-old outfielder with a great bat rising quickly. If both those players make the majors by age 22, the Cubs will have a nice core of young, hard hitting players. It’s a perfect now for the future trade!
