Coors on Fire

Walt Weiss speculates on why scoring suddenly exploded at Coors Field:

Saturday’s game, even more than Friday’s, played through a hazy fog. Wildfires in Washington state sent smoke into Colorado and turned the sky gray.

“The ball is flying right now,” Weiss said. “It’s the way the park has played the last couple nights.”

And Weiss — a baseball manager more than a meteorologist or climatologist — said the blaze, the haze and the crazy baseball might be related.

“My un-scientific theory is: A few years ago, I remember when the state was burning, with fires. It played like this all summer,” Weiss said. “I don’t know if the fires going on right now are a factor, but I was thinking about that tonight.”

Offense is way up across the league since the All-Star break. Something may be going on, not just fires in the northwest.
