Games of the Day

National League power houses meet in Philadelphia as the Dodgers play the Phillies. Bobby Miller and Zack Wheeler take the hill. Miller makes his seventh start of the season, and his ERA is well over two runs higher than in his rookie year. That mostly comes from giving up home runs and walks at about twice the frequency. Wheeler sits atop the Bill James Pitcher Rankings.

The best pitching matchup of the day belongs to Chris Sale of the Braves taking on Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks. Sale leads the NL in Enhanced Tom Tango Cy Young Points. Gallen holds opponents to a .280 OBP in 2024, which would be the best single season mark of his career.

Another Early Exit

Bobby Miller of the Dodgers gets chased after 1 2/3 innings, allowing four hits, two walks and three runs. That two games in a row where the Dodgers will need lots of innings from the bullpen. Given that this game is close at 3-0 Diamondbacks lead, Los Angeles will want to use their best pitchers to try to keep it close.

Playoffs Today

Zack Wheeler of the Phillies takes on Max Fried of the Braves in game two of their National League Division Series. The game kicks off at 6 PM EDT. Wheeler finished his fourth season as the ace of the Phillies with a 43-25 record in 101 starts and a 3.06 ERA. All of his three-true outcomes are excellent in that time frame. He beat Atlanta regularly, with a 6-2 record in thirteen starts with a 2.32 ERA. Fried battled injuries this season and still managed an 8-1 record with a 2.55 ERA. He owns the second best ERA in the majors since the start of the 2020 season, sandwiched between Justin Verlander and Clayton Kershaw.

In Los Angeles, a 9 PM EDT start features Zac Gallen of the Diamondbacks against Bobby Miller of the Dodgers. The Dodgers pounded Gallen this season, posting a .341/.420/.659 slash line against him. Note that they had pounded game one starter Merrill Kelly, also. The rookie Miller pitched well in two starts against the Diamondbacks. His strength is keeping the ball in the park, and he allowed Arizona one home run in twelve innings.

Games of the Day

The Rays can make up another game in the loss column as they send Zach Eflin against Jack Flaherty of the Orioles. The two are separated by one game in the AL East standings but two games in the AFILC. Eflin pitched 26 innings in his career against Baltimore, walking three and striking out 28. He’s been hurt by four home runs, however. Flaherty allowed six home runs in 27 2/3 innings since joining the Orioles, and the Rays are a good home run hitting team.

The Cubs visit the Diamondbacks as both teams make their push for a wild card berth in the NL. The Reds, Giants, and Diamondbacks are currently tied for the third slot in that race, with the Marlins 1/2 games back. That could lead to a complicated tie breaker. Justin Steele takes on Brandon Pfaadt. At 16 wins, Steele would need to win his last four starts to reach 20 wins. His 2.49 ERA helps in that regard. Pfaadt, in his rookie season allowed 92 hits in 80 2/3 innings, twenty of those home runs for a 6.25 ERA. That might also help Steele pick up the win tonight.

Finally, the Dodgers visit the Mariners with Bobby Miller facing George Kirby. The rookie Miller allowed just ten home runs in 101 2/3 innings, helping him to a 3.98 ERA. Kirby walked just 16 batters in 165 2/3 innings, the lowest walk rate in the majors this year.

Games of the Day

The Phillies face the Brewers with Ranger Suarez taking on Wade Miley. Suarez pitched decently well in his seventeen starts, his 3.88 ERA an exact match for his FIP. His 2-6 record has more to do with the Phillies scoring three runs or fewer in six of his starts. Miley owns a 7-3 record in eighteen starts, with a St. Patrick’s ERA of 3.17. With only 60 K in 93 2/3 innings, he still managed to allow just 80 hits.

The Braves go for a sweep of the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Charlie Morton takes on Bobby Miller. Morton is just two wins away from matching his single season high of 16 wins set in 2019 with the Rays. He is 37-22 since joining the Braves. Miller pitched poorly at home this season, posting a 5.28 ERA versus 2.70 on the road. Six of his eight home runs allowed came in Dodger Stadium.

Games of the Day

Washington visits Toronto the Blue Jays 2 1/2 games out of the third AL Wild Card slot. Josiah Gray takes on Kevin Gausman. Gray pitched well overall this season, but he has not been part of the Nationals late resurgence, posting a 7.79 ERA in August. He allowed sixteen hits and 13 walks in 17 1/3 innings. In six starts against NL teams, Gausman owns a 2.25 ERA with just one home run allowed in 36 innings.

The Astros visit the Red Sox, Boston 4 1/2 games out of the third wild card slot, occupied by Houston. Cristian Javier battles Chris Sale. Javier saw his K rate fall and his HR rate surge as his ERA rose nearly two runs compared to 2022. Sale struck out 19 and walked four in fourteen innings since returning from the illjured list, but allowed nine runs, eight of them earned.

Milwaukee owns a four game lead over the Cubs as the Brewers start a showdown in Chicago. Wade Miley takes on Jameson Taillon. Miley owns a 3.18 ERA in seventeen starts. He held batters to a .147/.241/.176 slash line with runners in scoring position. Taillon looked like he was turning things around in July, posting a 2.67 ERA, but he owns a 6.08 ERA in August, allowing five home runs in 26 2/3 innings.

Finally, the Diamondbacks visit the Dodgers with Zac Gallen facing Bobby Miller. The Diamondback are back in the playoff hunt, winning 12 of their last 15 games for the third WC slot in the NL. They are twelve games behind Los Angeles, so while a division win is a long shot, beating the Dodgers would send a message. Gallen, during this surge, is 3-0 with a 0.98 ERA. He walked three and struck out 22 in 18 1/3 innings. Miller struggled at Dodger Stadium in this his rookie year, 3-2 with a 5.17 ERA. He gave up five of his seven home runs at home.

Grinding the Opposition

Bobby Miller of the Dodgers continued the excellent start of his career on Saturday, pitching six shutout inning for his second start in a row. He’s now allowed two runs in 23 innings, both earned, for a 0.78 ERA. The weakest part of his game is his walks, with seven allowed so far. Given that he has yet to allow a home run and only gave up twelve hits, that’s a pretty good weakness.

The Dodgers defeat Philadelphia 9-0.

Games of the Day

Triston McKenzie returns to the Guardians rotation as they try to earn a split with the Twins. Joe Ryan takes the hill for Minnesota. McKenzie returns from a stain of his right teres muscle. He posted a breakout season in 2022, with a 2.96 ERA in 191 1/3 innings. He allowed just 138 hits. The Twins banged him around in his career, McKenzie owning a 2-5 in nine starts with a 5.65 ERA. He allowed 12 home runs in 51 innings against Minnesota. Ryan, with a 7-2 record and a 2.77 ERA does well in Bill James Cy Young Points, a measure of how voters will go for the award. He spots a great strikeout to walk ratio.

It’s a good day to B. a Miller. Bryce Miller of the Mariners faces Nathan Eovaldi of the Rangers. The rookie Miller makes his seventh start of the season and his career. So far, he walked three and struck out 31 in 36 innings to help him to a 3.00 ERA. Eovaldi comes off a great month of May that lowered his overall ERA to 2.42. He allowed just 3 home runs this season in 74 1/3 innings.

The Sunday night game features Domingo German of the Yankees taking on rookie Bobby Miller of the Dodgers. German’s 3.98 ERA seems high for his 0.98 WHIP, but he allowed eight home runs in 54 1/3 innings. Twelve of the 26 runs against him came on home runs. Miller makes his third start, with nine K and two walks in eleven innings. He’s yet to allow a home run.

Games of the Day

The Guardians at the Orioles gets the holiday off to a good start at 1 PM EDT as Logan Allen takes on Tyler Wells. The rookie Allen owns a 3.31 ERA in his brief MLB career. His three-true outcomes are solid, but he has allowed 38 hits in 32 2/3 innings. Wells’s 3.47 ERA represents the best season of his career so far. He allowed just 36 hits in 57 innings, but 13 of those went for home runs.

The Twins visit the Astros with Sonny Gray facing JP France. Gray is the only pitcher this season with at least 45 IP and no home runs allowed. (At the other end of the list is another Gray, Grayson Rodriguez.) The rookie France owns a 3.43 ERA in 21 innings. He walked just five, but also allowed five home runs.

Finally, Domingo German returns to the hill after his tacky suspension to face Bryce Miller of the Mariners. (Not be confused with Bobby Miller of the Dodgers, also a rookie, also pitching tonight, and also with a sub-two ERA.) German is another pitcher who limits hits but not home runs, as he allowed 28 hits in 48 innings, seven of them long balls. The rookie Miller is more Gray, as he has yet to allow a home run in 31 1/3 MLB innings. As he only walked three and allowed 13 hits, his ERA stands at an impressive 1.15.
