Seattle Keeps Dealing

The Mariners and Rangers pulled off a five-player swap:

Dipoto completed a five-player trade with the Texas Rangers, acquiring outfielder Leonys Martin and right-handed pitcher Anthony Bass in exchange for reliever Tom Wilhelmsen, outfielder James Jones and a player to named later.

The Mariners appear to have acquired Martin for his defense. Over his career, FanGraphs has his offensive runs at -17.8, his defensive runs at +30.2. He is coming off a very poor offensive year. While he’s unlikely to ever be a great offensive player, a bounce back to his 2014 numbers would make him a very useful player based on his defense.

Bass should be helped with home run by Seattle’s home stadium, and he improved his walk rate recently.

For Texas, they get a high strike out, high walk reliever in Wilhelmsen. Jones has not come close to his minor league hitting numbers in a small amount of time in the majors. Given his age, he doesn’t have much time to prove himself.

The Mariners have the most upside in this trade, but only if Martin’s bat bounces back.

Games of the Day

The Brewers find themselves not yet dead as Yovani Gallardo takes on David Holmberg. In 27 major league innings, Holmberg walked 18 and struck out 16, allowing seven home runs. He seems to not have heard of the three-true outcomes.

The Nationals can clinch home field advantage in the NL playoffs with a sweep of the Mets in today’s split admission double header. The Nationals win the tie break with the Dodgers, so a three-game lead with three to play gives them home field.

Seattle sends Tom Wilhelmsen with a 2.10 ERA against Daniel Norris. Norris makes his first major league start after four relief appearances. The Mariners stopped the carnage of the Blues Jays offense Wednesday night, but still lost 1-0. Wilhelmsen, with 71 K in 77 innings, hopes to give the Mariners offense a chance to keep the team in the playoff race for another day.

The Royals and Athletics can clinch a tie for the wild card with wins, and a definite spot if the win is combined with a Seattle loss. Jason Hammel takes of the Athletics takes on Colby Lewis in Texas, while James Shields pitches for the Royals against Jose Quintana of the White Sox.

Enjoy!

Gallant and Goofus

Jeremy Bonderman continued his return to the majors with eight shutout innings Wednesday night against the Astros. Unfortunately, having thrown just 89, walking just two and allowing just three hits, Eric Wedge went to the bullpen with a 1-0 lead. I assume his reasoning was, that Tom Wilhelmsen is the closer, and this was a closer situation. Tom allowed five runs in his 1/3 inning of work, and the Astros win 6-1. Wilhelmsen walked two, giving him 15 walks in 28 2/3 innings. With the high walk rate, and not that high a K rate, he’s a disaster waiting to happen on the mound, especially in a one-run game!

The Gallant Bonderman allowed one run in his last 14 innings. The Goofus Wilhelmsen gave up six in his last 1 1/3 innings, all to the weak hitting Astros.
