Stepping Up

Joe Kelly left the game between the Rays and the Red Sox in the top of the first inning:

Just 23 pitches into his start against the Rays on Tuesday night, Red Sox right-hander Joe Kelly exited the game with what the team later announced was an impingement of his right shoulder.

That’s not good for the Boston rotation, but they may have found two potential replacements in the game game. Heath Hembree game in and delivered four strikeouts in 3 1/3 innings and no runs allowed. He was followed by Robbie Ross Jr., who matched the four K and no runs in three innings. That got the Red Sox to the eighth with a shutout intact.

Boston needed that as well, as Drew Smyly throws eight innings, allowing one hit. He walked two and struck out 11. The Red Sox are batting in the bottom of the ninth against Erasmo Ramírez. Great pitching from both sides tonight.

Update: Kevin Kiermaier breaks up the scoreless tie with a solo home run leading off the tenth inning.

Games o’ the Day

The Braves and Cardinals start the day with Aaron Harang facing Shelby Miller. Harang made eight starts this season, six of them qualifying as quality. Fredi Gonzalez is not pushing the veteran, holding him to six innings most of the time. Harang is not getting the chance to blow up in a game. Miller may be the luckiest pitcher in baseball, as he carries a 3.22 ERA into the game despite a 5.88 FIP and a 4.89 xFIP. He’s holding opponents to a 2 for 34 with runners in scoring position, with only three RBI produced in those opportunities.

Oakland sends Scott Kazmir against the team that revived his career as Scott faces the Indians and Josh Tomlin. Kazmir has yet to allow a home run on the road this year although seven of his nine walks came away from Oakland. Tomlin got a late start, but in 12 2/3 innings so far this season, he walked just one batter.

Mark Buehrle tries to become the majors first eight-game winner as the Blue Jays take on the Rangers and Robbie Ross, Jr. With his 7-1 record this year, Mark stands 50 games above .500 for his career, 193-143, a .574 winning percentage. We should see him crack the 200 win barrier soon. He reliably wins 13 games a year, so it would take quite a streak to get him to 300 wins. He pitches as a 35-year-old this season. Ross shows good control, but batters take advantage of his pitches in the strike zone for a .311 BA.

Finally, Clayton Kershaw battles Chase Anderson as the Dodgers play in Arizona. Kershaw becomes even more amazing as time passes. So far this season, he walked one and struck out 25 in 20 2/3 innings. Anderson makes his second big league start and appearance, after pitching well against the White Sox in his debut. He pitched extremely well in the minors and comes to the majors in his full prime.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

Gio Gonzalez tries to get a win against his former team as the Nationals face the Athletics and Scott Kazmir. Gio’s strikeout and home run rates are closer to his 2012 than his 2013 numbers this season, and that has brought his ERA back down under 3.00. Kazmir allowed just two home runs so far this season after giving up 19 with Cleveland in 2013.

Another veteran pitching extremely well is Tim Hudson. He leads the Giants against the Dodgers and the best pitcher in baseball, Clayton Kershaw. Hudson owns two extremely sturdy legs of the three-true outcomes stool, having allowed just three walks and three home runs in 54 1/3 innings. In just two starts this season, Kershaw walked one and struck out 16. Opponents are 0 for 9 against him with runners in scoring position with one RBI. That’s the only run he allowed this season, and it came on a productive out. 🙂

It’s also Robbie R day, as Robbie Ray goes for the Tigers and Robbie Ross, Jr. hurls for the Rangers. The two teams have a four-games series at Detroit coming up, so we might see a head-to-head matchup soon!

Enjoy pink bat day!
