Games of the Day

The Guardians play in Cleveland for the first time with their new name. Carlos Rodon of the Giants gets the call against Zach Plesac. Rodon owns a long history against Cleveland, having pitched for the White Sox for most of his career. His 7-5 record doesn’t match his excellent 2.90 ERA, however. Plesac tries to turn around his 4.67 ERA of 2021, caused mostly by his high number of home runs allowed. So far, so good, as he did not allow a run in his first outing.

Jackie Robinson day culminates in Los Angeles as the Reds visit the Dodgers. Vladimir Gutierrez takes on Tony Gonsolin. In his short career, Gutierrez showed a weakness against left-handed batters. That group slugs .507 against him. Gonsolin is a reminder of the ability of the Dodgers front office to identify talent. In his fourth season with the Dodgers, Gonsolin owns a 2.85 ERA with a 10-5 record, and he’s yet to pitch a full season for the team.

Games of the Day

The slipping Reds face the surging Braves with Vladimir Gutierrez battling Kyle Muller in contest between true rookies. Gutierrez holds a 7-3 record in thirteen starts as he goes decently deep in games for a rookie. With a low K rate, he trades hits for walks, and also has a tendency to give up the long ball. The Reds scored five runs or more in nine of his starts, however. Muller’s K and home run rates are very good, but he also trades hits for walks. With his high K rate, the hits against him come at a much lower rate.

The White Sox host the Yankees in Iowa at the Field of Dreams, a promotional game for MLB. The series finishes Saturday and Sunday in Chicago. Andrew Heaney faces Lance Lynn. Heaney owns a 5.45 ERA this season, thanks to a high home run rate and batter getting hits frequently when they don’t strike out. Lynn leads the Tom Tango Cy Young predictor over teammate Carlos Rodon.

Finally, Toronto finishes their series with the Angels as Jose Berrios takes on Shohei Ohtani. It’s a contrast in control as Berrios walked 33 batters in 133 2/3 inning while Ohtani walked 36 batters in 86 innings.

Ohtani homered Wednesday night after a long drought. His probability of 62 home runs shrunk quite a bit, and his most likely home run total is now at 49.
