The Diamondbacks sent Conor Jackson to the Athletics for minor leaguer Sam Demel.
Demel has recorded 200 strikeouts and only 90 walks in 180.2 innings throughout his professional baseball career, which translates to 9.96 strikeouts per 9.0 innings.
Jackson owns a .358 career OBP, but most of that came before a Valley Fever infection in 2009. The Athletics must believe that he will recover from that and start getting on base again.
Demel fits a big need in Arizona, a reliever with a good ERA who strikes out a ton of batters. His overall walk rate in the minors is high, 4.5 per nine innings, but it’s just 2.8 per 9 this season. If he figured out his control, he should give the bullpen a big boost.
