Broadside

The Pirates made sure Paul Skenes received as much run support as needed as they tie a club record with a barrage of seven home runs in a 14-2 rout of the Mets. Rowdy Tellez and Bryan Reynolds launched two each. Reynolds remains on a hot streak that started June 1, hitting .339/.388/.645 in that time.

The Pirates are one of six NL teams closely bunched behind the wild card pack, ranging from three games to 5 1/2 games behind the third slot Cardinals. We will see which teams go for it or stock up for next season at the trade deadline.

Best Batter Today

Aaron Judge of the Yankees remains on top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Judge went one for four with a sacrifice fly Sunday, with the rest of the Yankees offense adding the power in a 10-3 win over the Rays. The Yankees lead in the division is up to 5 1/2 games over Tampa Bay. Judge is now on a pace for 63 home runs, with his most likely total 60. The probability of him hitting at least 62 home runs dropped to 0.25, or a one in four chance of setting a new AL single season home run record.

Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers remains in second place after going two for three with a walk in an 11-2 win over Padres, the Dodgers clinching a playoff slot.

Third place now belongs to Alex Bregman of the Astros, who homered, walked twice, and drove in four runs in the 12-4 downing of the Angels. HIs teammate, Jose Altuve, ranks fifth after a three for five day at the plate.

The Cardinals gave Paul Goldschmidt the day off and he drops to fourth place.

The highest game scores of the day belongs to Rowdy Tellez of the Brewers and Julio Rodriguez of the Mariners, both with an 81. Tellez got there with a three for five day, knocking out a double and two home runs in a 7-6 win over Cincinnati. Rodriguez goes three for four with a walk and two home runs in an 8-7 win over the Braves.

Best Batter Today

The idle Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals stays on top of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. He did not play in a 6-1 win over the Blue Jays, as Albert Pujols has a big day up north, going three for four with a double and a home run.

Yordan Alvarez of the Astros moves into second place as he homers and walks twice in a 4-2 Oakland victory. Freddie Freeman of the Dodgers singles and walks in three PA as Los Angeles beats Washington 7-1.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees takes an 0 for 5 in a 3-2 loss for the Mets to sit in fourth place. Judge is now on pace for 62 home runs with a probability of hitting at least 62 of 0.021. Austin Riley of the Braves took an 0 for 4 in a 7-2 Phillies win for fifth place.

The best game score of the day belongs to Rowdy Tellez of the Brewers, a 79. He hits two home runs and draws a walk in five trips to beat out Pujols’s 75. The Brewers beat the Twins 10-4. Tellez went in the opposite direction from the rest of baseball this season, increasing his strikeouts, walks, and home runs while dropping his batting average. His slugging percentage is up 51 points while his BA is down 12 points.

Best Batter Today

Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals once again tops the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Goldschmidt homered and walked in five plate appearances, but the Cubs came back from a 5-0 deficit to win 6-5 in ten innings. Yordan Alvarez of the Astros did not start. He remains in second place, but now 14 points behind Goldschmidt.

Pete Alonso of the Mets holds third place as he doubles and walks in four trips to the plate in a 3-2 Marlins win. Bryce Harper of the Phillies sits in fourth place today, but will start dropping soon as his injured thumb will keep him out of action for a while.

Fifth place today belongs to Jose Ramirez of the Guardians. He posts a three for four day with two doubles, but the Red Sox take the game 8-3 for their seventh straight win. Both teams now sit in second place in their respective divisions Boston eleven games out, Cleveland two games out.

The best game score of the day belong to Rowdy Tellez of the Browsers, a 76. He hits two home runs and draws a walk against his former team, the Blue Jays, as Milwaukee takes the game 10-3. Tellez’s slash line this season is right in line with his career averages, doing a bit better at getting on base. With thirteen dingers this year, he’s on a pace to top his 21 home runs in 2019. He sits 73rd in the rankings.

Best Batter Today

For the first time in a very long time, Juan Soto falls out of the top five of the Baseball Musings Batter Rankings. Soto’s one for four in a 5-2 Rockies win is not enough to keep him ahead of the competition.

Ty France of the Mariners holds a slim lead over Manny Machado of the Padres. France went 0 for 4 in a 7-2 Astros win. Machado posted a two for eight day with a home run and two walks in a doubleheader split with the Guardians.

France’s teammate, J.P.Crawford holds third place with a two for four. Paul Goldschmidt of the Cardinals sits fourth as he draw three walks in a 10-0 win over the Royals. Jose Ramirez of the Guardians drew four walks in the doubleheader for fifth place.

The top two game scores of the day go to Brewers as they beat the Reds 18-4, extending Cincinnati’s miserable record to 3-21. Rowdy Tellez posted a four for six day with a double and two home runs for an 89. Andrew McCutchen turned in a four for five game with a double for a 77. Tellez is not slugging .613 on the season, with twelve of his twenty hits going for extra bases.

All or Nothing

The Brewers beat the Braves in the opening game of their NLDS by a score of 2-1. All the runs scored on home runs. The difference was that Joc Pederson of the Braves hit a solo shot, while Rowdy Tellez of the Brewers went deep with a runner on base. Both starters, Charlie Morton of the Braves and Corbin Burnes of the Brewers pitched well, but one mistake by Morton cost the Braves the game.

A Rowdy Finish

Rowdy Tellez posted a 3 for 4 game Saturday for the Blue Jays, raising his BA to .403. That’s the highest BA this season with a minimum of 30 plate appearances.

In 1957, Bob Hazel hit .403 in 134 at bats, the most AB for someone hitting .400 since Ted Williams in 1941. Since that time, only nine players have recorded a .400 BA in a season with at least 40 AB. The last was Glenn Williams who went 17 for 40 in 2005, his only 40 at bats in the majors.

Right behind Tellez sits Aramis Garcia, batting .368 in 38 AB. What is incredibly interesting about these two hitters is that they are recording high batting averages while striking out a ton. Tellez struck out 12 times already. Tellez struck out 12 times in 48 PA, which would prorate out to 150 K in 600 PA. Garcia struck out 18 times in 38 PA, which would prorate out to 284 K in 600 PA. The two are just smacking the ball when they hit it. Twelve of Tellez’s 19 hits have gone for extra bases. Imagine what these two would hit if they put the ball in play more.

Before we get too excited, however, we should note that these high BAs are totally out of line with their minor league numbers. Tellez did develop power at AA last season, and he’s young enough to still be improving. But their high K rates and lack of selectivity probably doom them to a fate similar to Glenn Williams.
