Davalillo Passes

Former outfielder Vic Davalillo died December sixth:

Davalillo died in Caracas after emergency surgery due to an intestinal obstruction and renal insufficiency, daughter Helga Davalillo said.

He was 84 or 87, depending on conflicting sources. Baseball Reference lists his date of birth as July 30, 1939, but Davalillo considered July 31 his birthday and Asdrúbal Fuenmayor wrote in a 2006 biography that Davalillo was born in 1936. The 1969 Sporting News Baseball Register also used 1936.

My thoughts go out to his family and friends.

Davalillio’s strength as a hitter came from hit batting average, as he did not walk much, and did not strike out that much. Early in his career his Ks were a bit high for the era, but he brought them under control in his third year, which turned out to be his best season. He slashed .301/.344/.372 in 1965, and with fine defense posted a 4.2 rWAR. The high OBPs of his youth did not last long into his prime, giving some credence to 1936 as the correct year of his birth.

He hit very well in the post season going .323/.400/.419 in 22 games, winning the World Series in 1971 with the Pirates and 1973 with the Athletics.
