Games of the Day

Toronto sends rookie Ryan Borucki against former teammate J.A. Happ and the Yankees. Borucki, a true rookie, makes his tenth start. He doesn’t strike out many batters, but makes up for it by keeping his walk home run rates low. The latter will be test in Yankee Stadium. Happ is 3-0 with a 1.89 ERA since joining New York, giving an injured rotation a boost. He allowed just eight hits in 19 innings.

The Brewers try to retake the second wild card slot as they send Jhoulys Chacín against the Cardinals and John Gant. Chacin pitched poorly against the Cardinals this season, 0-2 with an 8.59 ERA in three starts. He allowed 21 hits and 10 walks in 14 2/3 innings. Gant gives up many fewer hits at home this year, although his three-true outcomes on the road are slightly better.

Oakland goes for the sweep of the Astros and sole possession of first place in the AL West. Justin Verlander tries to stop Sean Manaea. Verlander pitches better on the road this season, 9-2 with a 1.74 ERA. Manaea is 6-0 in day games, with a 2.81 ERA covering ten starts.

Through June, the Houston gave the Oakland starters a lot of trouble. That turned around in the second half.

Finally, the Dodgers and Mariners finish their series with Clayton Kershaw facing Roenis Elias. Kershaw returned to form since the All-Star break, with two home runs and two walks allowed in 33 2/3 innings. Elias makes his second start of the season to go along with 12 relief appearances. He has not allowed a home run in 25 innings this season.

Building the Bullpen

The Red Sox seem to be taking the tack of a number of teams and building a great bullpen. They trade Wade Miley to the Mariners for Carson Smith and Roenis Elias. Smith’s first 78 majors league innings were impressive. He allowed just two home runs while averaging 11.7 K per 9. The Elias is not quite as good as Miley, but I suspect the Mariners see Miley as an innings eater.

Games of the Day

It’s Flag Day, better known on the north side of Chicago as Passover (with apologies to Bob Hope.)

The Indians and Tigers get things rolling with Corey Kluber facing Alfredo Simon. Kluber pitched 15 innings so far in June with no home runs allowed and just four walks, but 16 hits led to six runs and an 0-2 record. Simon allowed just one of his five home runs at home this season, where he owns a 1.90 ERA.

The Yankees try to snap a three-game losing streak and fend off the rest of the AL East as Adam Warren faces Baltimore and Mike Wright. The right hander Warren handles left-handed batters well. While LHB hit for a higher batting average against Warren than RHB, Adam holds lefties to a lower OBP and slugging percentage. Mike make Wright so far as he comes into the game with a 2.96 ERA. He allowed four home runs in 24 1/3 innings, but that’s about the only way to score against him as seven of the eight runs allowed were driven in with homers.

Toronto tries to go to eleven as they send Marco Estrada against another tough rookie, Eduardo Rodriguez. Estrada has been tough with runners on base this year, allowing a .191 BA, but ten of the 17 hits against him in that situation went for extra bases. Rodriguez (dare I call him E-Rod?) allowed one run so far this season covering three starts. He walked seven in 20 1/3 innings but struck out 21, and allowed just eight hits.

Former teammates Cole Hamels and A.J. Burnett square off in Pittsburgh as the Pirates host the Phillies. Hamels is giving up a ton of home runs compared to last season, but his high strikeout rate should make him a great trade target. Burnett owns a 3.20 ERA in his career with the Pirates, allowing just 0.61 HR per 9 IP.

The Nationals take on the Brewers while Max Scherzer tries to get back in the win column as he faces the third outstanding rookie pitching today, Taylor Jungmann. Scherzer gave up eight runs in his last 12 2/3 innings as Washington lost both those starts. Three home runs hurt his cause. Jungmann allowed just three hits, a walk, and a run in his major league debut.

The Mariners and Astros play the rubber game of their series with Roenis Elias battling the fourth rookie star of the day, Lance McCullers. Elias is pitching better on the road this season, with all three of his wins away thanks to a 2.48 ERA. McCullers walked six and struck out 36 in his first 31 MLB innings.

Finally, Mike Bolsinger leads the Dodgers against the Padres and the undefeated James Shields. Bolsinger allowed just two home runs this season in 43 1/3 innings after giving up seven in his rookie year in 52 1/3 innings. Shields allowed 15 home runs this season, but 12 came with the bases empty. Opponents manage just a .308 OBP against him.

Games of the Day

Tuesday offers a star-studded lineup of starting pitchers, beginning with Eduardo Rodriguez taking on Miguel Gonzalez as the Red Sox visit the Orioles. Rodriguez lived up to the hype surrounding him so far, with one run allowed in 14 2/3 innings on a solo home run. He allowed five hits and four walks so far. Gonzalez allowed eleven home runs in 68 2/3 innings, but with low walk and hit totals, seven of those were solo shots.

The Nationals travel to New York to take on the Yankees, Bryce Harper making his Yankee Stadium debut. He has a tendency to come up big in on the big stage. It’s a great pitching match-up as well, with Max Scherzer taking on Masahiro Tanaka. Scherzer’s 1.85 ERA is much better than his 6-4 record. He walked 12 and struck out 90 in 77 2/3 innings, holding opponents to a .239 OBP. Tanaka made a successful return from his injury, walking none and striking out nine as he held Seattle to one run in his last start.

While not a game of the day, Taylor Jungmann makes his major league debut against the Pirates. I have to wonder if his walk up music will be YMCA.

Roenis Elias takes on Corey Kluber in a battle of pitchers with better ERA than records as Seattle plays Cleveland. While Elias pitches well, his low ERA has more to do with his .167 BA allowed with runners in scoring position. Kluber is just three behind Chris Archer for the major league lead in strikeouts.

Dallas Keuchel tries to get the Astros back in the win column as he pitches against the White Sox and rookie Carlos Rodon. Keuchel allowed just three home runs in 87 2/3 innings this season, but all three came on the road. Rodon is wild, with 22 walks in 34 2/3 innings, but allows a .227 BA with men on base.

Finally, most pundits would not have predicted the Rangers in second place and the Athletics last in the AL West, but that is where the teams find themselves as Nick Martinez faces Sonny Gray. Nick handled Oakland well so far this season with a 1.38 ERA in two starts, although three of the five runs he allowed were unearned. Gray is in the Cy Young running with a 7-2 record and 1.65 ERA. The Rangers have not scored against him in 14 2/3 innings despite drawing eight walks. They only managed three hits.

Games of the Day

The improved Royals travel to New York to play the reeling Yankees as Jeremy Guthrie faces Nathan Eovaldi. It’s not the greatest pitching match-up, but keep your eyes on Mike Moustakas, Eric Hosmer, and Kendrys Morales. All three are off to terrific starts, and the three have combined for 156 hits, 57 for extra bases. This is the kind of production that has been expected of the younger two for years, and Morales finally seems to be back to his pre walk-off injury self.

The Astros tour continues as their ace, Dallas Keuchel tries to remain undefeated against Wei-Yin Chen and the Orioles. Keuchel is slightly behind Sonny Gray in Tom Tango Cy Young Tracker points, so a decent game will put the Astros starter back in the lead. Chen stands 1-3 despite a 2.90 ERA, and owns that ERA despite allowing seven home runs in 49 2/3 innings. Opponents are hitting just .118 against him with runners in scoring position. The Astros are a power team, however, so they should match up well in the game.

The Nationals travel to Chicago to take on the improved Cubs. Tanner Roark faces Tsuyoshi Wada. Roark makes his first start of the season as Doug Fister lands on the disabled list. He posted one of the best ERAs in the Washington rotation in 2014, but his three-true outcomes were the weakest of the group. He walked five and struck out seven in 20 1/3 bullpen innings this year. Wada struck out nine and walked one in 4 2/3 innings in his first start this year.

Finally, the Mariners take on the Rays as Roenis Elias battles Jake Odorizzi. Elias allowed three of his four home runs on the road, but he’s also struck out 17 in 20 2/3 innings away. Odorizzi allowed just two home runs this season in 59 1/3 innings, and owns a 1.73 ERA at home.

Games of the Day

The only game Wednesday afternoon features the Athletics at the Astros as Jesse Hahn faces Dallas Keuchel. Hahn has excellent control, walking nine in 38 2/3 innings with just one home run allowed. He gives up a ton of hits, however, leading to his high ERA. Keuchel goes for his sixth win against no losses. He is a lefty who manages to hold right-handed batters to a .190/.258/.245 slash line this season.

The Mariners send Roenis Elias against the Orioles and Wei-Yin Chen. Elias’s innings have been fairly evenly split home and road (12 and 13 respectively). He’s a allowed three of his four homers away. Chen allowed four of his six home runs at home, so look for long balls in this game.

Chase Anderson and the Diamondbacks take on David Phelps and the Marlins. Anderson has yet to allow a home run on the road this season in 17 1/3 innings, helping him to a 1.56 ERA away. Phelps owns a 1.75 ERA as a starter, having given up four runs in one inning as a reliever.

Games of the Day

Max Scherzer takes on Matt Harvey as the Nationals try to win their fourth game in a row and second against the Mets.

The Tigers and Royals continue their AL Central battle as Kyle Lobstein battles Chris Young.

The Astros go for their eighth win in a row as they host the Mariners. Roenis Elias makes his second start of the season for Seattle against Samuel Deduno. Deduno makes his first start of the year after five relief appearances.

The Pirates open a series with the first place Cardinals as A.J. Burnett takes on Lance Lynn. The Cardinals own the best record in the majors.

Games of the Day

Max Scherzer takes on Chris Sale in the first of two games today between the Tigers and the White Sox.

The Reds send Alfredo Simon against the Pirates and Vance Worley.

Miami sends Jarred Cosart against the Braves and Aaron Harang.

Zack Greinke battle Ian Kennedy as the Dodgers play the Padres in San Diego.

Mike Fiers and Jake Peavy start as the Brewers continue their series with the Giants.

Finally, Stephen Strasburg matches up with Roenis Elias as the Nationals try to make it two in a row against the Mariners.

Games of the Day

The Nationals continue their tradition of playing an 11 AM game on Independence Day with a tilt against the Cubs. Jason Hammel takes on Tanner Roark. The 31-year-old Hammel is someone the Cubs might be able to flip for prospects, as his 2.98 ERA is the best of his career for a single season. He did a good job this season of cutting down on his home runs allowed. Roark owns Nationals Park with a 1.59 ERA there this season. He keeps opponents power at bay in Washington with a .229/.293/.298 slash line allowed.

Roenis Elias and Chris Sale face off in Chicago as the Mariners visit the White Sox. Roenis pitches much better during the day, 4-0 with a 2.29 ERA in five starts this season. Unfortunately, this game is under the lights. Sale allowed just three home runs in 50 1/3 innings at home.

The Reds try to gain in the NL Central as they host the Brewers. Kyle Loshe takes on Alfredo Simon.

Yu Darvish brings the Rangers into New York to face Jonathon Niese and the Mets.

Finally, Clayton Kershaw puts his 28 concecutive scoreless inning streak on the line against the Rockies and Jair Jurrgens. Jurrjens makes his 2014 debut.

Games of the Day

Just started a new job today, so here is just a quick best of the best on a great day for pitching match-ups.

Alex Cobb leads the Rays against the Blue Jays and Mark Buehrle.

Max Scherzer and Sonny Gray meet in a battle of Cy Young candidates as the Tigers continue their series with the Athletics.

Jered Weaver and Roenis Elias meet in an AL West battle between the Angels and Mariners.

Finally, Alfredo Simon tries to prevent Zack Greinke‘s eighth win as the Reds face the Dodgers.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

Clayton Kershaw returns to major league action as the Dodgers continue their series in Washington. Blake Treinen takes the hill for the Nationals. Kershaw made an outstanding start in Australia, then injured himself throwing on the side. This will likely be the first season since his rookie year he failed to make 30 starts. Treinen makes his first MLB start after three relief appearances. He gave up 11 hits in 6 2/3 innings, but walked just two, his strength in the minors.

On the west coast, Roenis Elias leads Seattle against Jesse Chavez and the Athletics. Elias pitched well on the road this season, with a 2.59 ERA in four starts. Chavez owns a 1.89 ERA thanks to just 8 walks in 38 innings. He’s only recorded two decisions, however.

Enjoy!

Games of the Day

The pitching matchups are nothing to write home about, but the Padres and Indians play an old-fashioned, single admission, day-time double header this afternoon to make up for a rain out on Monday. Cool.

The aptly named Brad Hand takes on Jordan Zimmermann as the Marlins continue their series in Washington. Hand allowed just one hit in five relief innings this season, but is a wild pitcher, with 52 walks in 89 1/3 career major league innings. Zimmermann walked just one in his first five innings of work this season, which is pretty consistent with his career.

Finally, the Mariners try to continue their dominance of the Angels as LAnaheim’s Garrett Richards faces Roenis Elias of Seattle. Richards did not pitch to contact in his first start, walking five and striking out seven in five innings. He allowed just three hits, however, and one run. Elias was a bit less wild, walking three in his five innings of work, allowing two hits and one run. The Mariners stand at 4-0 against the Angels this season.

Games of the Day

There’s lots of afternoon action this Thursday, so take lunch late and stay out for awhile. 🙂 It’s also a great day for great names.

Lance Lynn, Secret Chimp, leads the Cardinals against Homer Bailey and the Reds, who may beat Bob Walk for worst name for a pitcher.

Yordano Ventura takes the mound for Kansas City, ringing in his season against the Tigers and Anibal Sanchez. They are the only major league players ever with those first names.

Crafts of the 19th century will be on display as Tanner Roark faces Zack Wheeler as the Nationals go for a sweep of the Mets in New York.

Finally, Roenis Elias makes his major league debut as Seattle moves to Oakland to face Jesse Chavez. Elias has not pitched above AA. At age 24 in 2013, he had a break-out year at AA, increasing his K rate and lowering his home run rate. We’ll see if it translates to the majors.

Enjoy!
