Can Gwynn Get on Base?

Rob Neyer reacts to Ned Colletti hoping Tony Gwynn, Jr. can get on base more:

Of course, his true ability is probably in the middle somewhere, but could Gwynn do .350 (or better!) in March and April and sucker Don Mattingly into playing him out there regularly? Sure.

That’s the problem with giving subpar veterans a shot to win a job. Sometimes they’ll actually do it.

Marcel the Monkey projects a .322 OBP for Gwynn. At age 28, Tony should be at the top of his game. In other words, it’s a good year to exceed expectations.

Rob, however, seems to think that March performance will cause the Dodgers to believe Gwynn is good, even if his 2011 regular season numbers aren’t. Colletti’s statements seem to show an understanding of what Gwynn can and can’t do. If Tony has a sub-.300 OBP at the end of April, he won’t be playing much longer. Mattingly played with two great leadoff hitters, Willie Randolph and Rickey Henderson. Don should be able to recognize a poor one.

Players A to Z, Tony Gwynn, Jr.

Tony Gwynn, Jr. plays outfield for the San Diego Padres. He is the son of Padres great Tony Gwynn, Sr. The younger Gwynn was given a chance to play full time in 2009 for the Padres after three seasons of part time play for the Brewers, and responded with a .350 OBP. He possesses very little power, as his career slugging percentage of .326 is below his career OBP of .331.

Gwynn doesn’t need much power, however. He’ll serve as the leadoff man for the 2010 Padres, so his job will be to get on base as much as possible for Adrian Gonzalez. On top of that, San Diego plays in a home field that limits power anyway, so getting on base and being able to run well are much more important skills. Gwynn stole poorly in 2009, however, getting caught in seven of 18 attempts.

With full time play, he was also able to shine with the glove. Again, with the park cutting down on power, keeping batters off base is paramount to the defense, and Gwynn helps a great deal in that area. In San Diego, he found a niche that he fits well.
